Link: Mets’ Matt Harvey beginning to understand keys to success

If you have yet to do so you should read a very insightful article by Andy McCullough of The Star-Ledger about Mets pitching prospect Matt Harvey and his growth so far at the Major League level.

Below is an excerpt to entice you.

As Buffalo manager Wally Backman called Harvey off the field, his teammates began to applaud.

When Harvey imagined this moment, he figured Backman would shake his hand and congratulate him. Instead, Backman told him Collins and general manager Sandy Alderson were on the phone. “At that point, I was like ‘Ah, something’s going on,’ ” he said.

with all the young guys in the rotation, having a smart, veteran catcher to help develop them is even more important. Not like thole hits to make up for it, so go with the vets instead?

best option is a smart young catcher that can come up through the system with them of course, but we sure don’t have that.

I completely agree with you. I’ll even take it one step further. The future of this team is its young pitching and while everyone calls for the outfield and bullpen to be addressed with the little resources Sandy will have to spend acquiring a veteran catcher to help develop the young pitchers is even more important. In hockey the quickest way to upgrade your team is with a superb goaltender and in baseball it is with strong starting pitching.

    Great article.
I think Harvey will do well up here as he adjusts to ML hitters. I’m glad his debut was late this year in a lost season as opposed to next April.
