Last night I was on hand for Mets manager, Terry Collins’ pre game press conference. He discussed everything from how Lucas Duda will be used and if Matt Harvey will really be shut down.
And with that said….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!
Mets Alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:
Spot starter/middle reliever from ’64-’66, Dennis Ribant is 71 (1941).
Reserve outfielder/first baseman from ’92-’93, Dave Gallagher is 52 (1960).
Current Mets left fielder, Jason Bay is 34 (1978). Guys be easy on Bay tonight if he plays.
Mo Vaughn wants to challenge Ryan Howard to a “RERUN” Fred Berry style dance off !!!

Thanks for sharing.
Nothing said really that we don’t already know.
- Have to keep players healthy – check
- Have to keep players from fading in the 2nd half – check
- Impressed with what Harvey was able to do – check
Heard the last question there on the OF situation going into next season. Would have liked to hear that answer. Read somewhere else that Kirk figures prominently in that equation.

That Kirk comment pretty much tells you everything you need to know about this off season and next year.
basically. look at last off season, and expect the same. Then look at this season, and expect a repeat.
No need for any speculation posts this year (the moves that could fix the team, players to go after). Since as soon as the season ends they will quickly wrap up the tenders/non-tenders/DFAs, then hit the beach to relax for the winter.
Maybe in February will check to see if any marginal injured RPs are kicking around that might take a low ball deal, but you can do that on the internet. Virtual GM!
considering they can’t even work up the energy to fire Warthen, expect absolutely nothing else.
and please, don’t think it means jack to 2014. Just a chance to drop payroll a bit more, and maybe add a mid-level FA (think BJ upton, but not as good) as window dressing. You like Kirk? Well, he will still be King in 2014.
They honestly should grow a pair and do something serious about trying to rebuild this mess, and just trade Wright (who is wildly overrated, and if he can be traded as a stud it will be a much smarter idea than paying him like one) and Dickey. Then just tell the fans to check back in 2015 to see if anything is happening.

I’d say Sandy accomplished his main goal, which was a hand in saving the team for the Wilpons.
I don’t expect them to spend any money – the Mets are still broke. I expect them to have one foot in only on the whole ‘rebuilding’ aspect. So yeah….can’t say I disagree with you much on how much different 2013 will be.
As far as your comment below on firing Terry…..IDK about that. When they were tanking in ’08 and then again a couple of years later, they did the standard by firing Willie and Jerry. They might have deserved it (especially Jerry in my mind) but that didn’t solve anything. Most times, it very rarely does. The manager is just about always the first scapegoat though.
I read a little while ago the vote of confidence the FO gave Terry. I don’t think he’s going anywhere for 2013.

This is listed on MLBTR. Fits along with what you are saying.
“Commissioner Bud Selig isn’t worried about the Mets, Newsday’s Marc Carig reports (Twitterlinks). “I don’t consider the Mets a problem in any way, shape or manner,” Selig said. “They’re on the right track.” Selig went on to express confidence in the Wilpon family and general manager Sandy Alderson.”
The commish is happy with mini-commish… just saying.

that scares me more than anything. Selig is an idiot. But he does look out for the other insiders in the “club”!

Blah.
Not a doubt in my mind that SA & Co. was part of a deal the Wilpons cut with Selig to save the franchise for them.

probably were.
but, consider the team “saved” for the moment, in that they seem to have reached some sort of equilibrium. But that is only temporary, unless they are willing to take it to Pirate’s levels of suckitude. Run payroll down to 70mill and keep it there, and not even pretend to be trying to put a winner on the field. Just waiting for the future prospect heaven that will never arrive!
so IMO they saved it for now, but if they want to actually keep it LT, they need to build it back up, and fast, before there are no fans left.

No problem, Rusty.
Think I read somewhere else that Terry said something like Kirk figures prominently in their plans next season. I really hope that mean as part of a trade package for a better OF.

a 4th OF or platoon type I can live with.

Terry deserves to be fired. Probably would not be back on just about any other team, but this is our “what me worry” Mets. They have a lot of problems, and it is clear (crystal clear!) that Terry is not part of any solution.

He does not deserve to be back, but he will. Play out his contract and then be re-assigned within the organization as a roving instructor of some sorts. Not saying Backman will be the next guy in, but he or Tuefel could certainly be in the. That puts them for 2014, No big contracts on the books (assuming Wright does not re-up) and assuming it’s Depo who takes over the helm, a fairly clean slate for Sandy in company to start the plans of the GM to be in action. New MGR, new GM (almost) and $$$ to spend on some players and a farm system that should be much better in 2014 than where it was in 2009.
Long term plans suck when you want the results now.

Officially I will be there on Sept 30th, but have a place, sold my house, etc. etc. So that’s close enough for a moniker change if there ever will be.
And the microbrews are plentiful and amazing.

I still remember when I went on vacation to SF many years ago, and being all screwed up when the early football games were on at 10:00 AM!
at least by 4:00 you were done with most of the slate. and no staying up late to watch baseball games either.

one thing to be curious about.
will the Phils raise their WS championship banner in the first home series vs. KC next year, or wait until the 2nd series when the Mets come in, since they will owe the Mets a huge favor for taking them off life support?

La-La-La, I can’t hear you.
I will have none of the Phillies making it to post season.
