Well another Mets season is winding down and yet again this organization has more questions to ask themselves than answers. This off season looks like it will be busy one – I doubt that there will be a lot – if any new big ticket players making their home in Flushing, but with that said I think there will be moves made.
So with just 9 scant days left to this season here are some of the thoughts that have been rattling around in my dense skull.
If the Mets run the table and win the rest of their games, they will finish with a record of 79-83. Even if they finished 75-87 it would probably surpass most fans pre season’s expectations.
If I had the choice of trading either Ike Davis or Lucas Duda – I would have to deal Duda. I just feel that he can flourish away from the brightlight’s of New York.
Kelly Shoppach looks a lot like Mike Pelfrey with a beard !!!!!
After last Friday’s apology to his players, I feel that Terry Collins should be reassigned within the organization and possibly promote Wally Backman as the new Mets manager.
The Pat LaFrieda Steak Sandwich is my new favorite delicacy at Citi Field.
Citi Field is starting to look and feel like M. Donald Grant’s Tomb.
Jon Rauch should take up professional wrestling once his baseball career is over.
Matt Harvey is the real deal – now if the offense can only give him run support.
Sandy Alderson is doing the best job that he can do with the limited budget that he has been given.
The Johan Santana deal – even though it is a bust on paper in my opinion has been a success – not that he has lived up to his contract ( we all know he certainly has tried too.) – but because he gave us our first “magical moment” at Citi Field .
The Party City Deck was a stroke of genius.
R.A Dickey is more than deserving of the Cy Young Award ( but I admit that I am biased)
And lastly Fred, Jeff, Unky Saul – PLEASE SELL THE TEAM !!!
Your thoughts
And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!
Mets alumni celebrating a birthday includes:
Spot starter/middle reliever from the ’66 season, Bill Hepler is ’67 (1945). In his lone season as a Met, Hepler had a record of 3-3 witha E.R.A of 3.52 in 37 appearances.
Middle reliever from ’02-’04, Dave Weathers is 43 (1969).
Reserve infielder from the ’08 and ’09, seasons Argenis Reyes is 30 (1982). Reyes was nothing moe than a AAAA caliber infielder, but he played well enough to win the heart of Mets fans in ’08. He lost our hearts in ’09 though.
Mo Vaughn often pondered the notion of making the Bow Wow Wow song “I Want Candy” as his walk up theme music !!!!

I agree that they will not be adding any big-ticket FAs. Omar took care of doing that for the team a few years ago. And I agree that many moves should be made. But, I disagree that they will be.
Sandy will do jack-shat-diddlysquat again this year. A few different spare parts, and they will cut Bay in ST (there is your bone fans!) but other than that, same team.
I would probably trade Duda over Ike, but if Ike could headline a big package of need fillers (say the D’astronaut guy + an OF from Toronto) then he can go.
Yes to Harvey being real. No to Sandy doing the best he could.
And I agree about Terry. Let him announce it as his decision, but do the smart thing for the team and his sanity, and go back into a player development role.
But please, not Wally. I don’t really see the attraction there. Terry sac bunted enough, Wally would take it to another level. I don’t care he was on the ’86 team, and is “fiery”, how about finding the next Maddon or Scoscia?

Agreed on D’Agastino.
Also agreed on Sandy not doing the best he could do. I understand the patience thing, but I feel more could have been done via trades. Just waiting for bad contracts to fall off the books is not the best course of action. I’ll reserve judgement until after this offseason to give the thumbs up/thumbs down call.
As for Terry, you are probably right in that he should be re-assigned now. I do feel he’ll be either re-assigned after the following season when his contract expires or he’ll be removed mid-season (just like all the other places he managed before…). Not sure Wally is the guy for this team or not. He does know the kids coming up, so that would be a plus.

I’m with you on Duda.
Heck, Ike has 30 HRs now in a season where he basically didn’t do squat for the first half of the season. If he had even a mediocre first couple of months he could have possibly wound up with 40 HRs.
Wilpons selling the team….a fantasy of mine that I know is not gonna happen.
I don’t think TC will be the manager past next year but I’m not sure if they select Wally as the heir apparent.
I was very impressed with Harvey’s debut up here before they shut him down. Maybe there was something to that ‘he was a bit bored down there at triple A the past couple of months.’
Even with the injuries, I don’t consider Johan’s contract a bust.
Don’t know what it’s like at Citi field itself but watching these games on TV with no one in the stands is very reminiscent of Shea back in the days of Grant’s tomb.

There really is no comparison between Davis and Duda. Davis has proven that, while not the superstar people wanted him to be (sorry, he’s Adam Dunn Lite), he’s shown serious power and plays top notch defense. Duda… is a dud. He has minimal trade value at this point. He’s a guy that hasn’t done ANYTHING consistently in the majors other than make outs, has been up and down to AAA all season, and falls on his face in LF. Let’s be real here, if you can get a filler piece for Dud, you do it and end this charade. Davis has enough value to be a part of a package for a serious contributing piece.
I don’t see why Terry should be out of the managerial role next year. Remember, the “grass is greener” approach got us Jerry the Gangsta and some of the most depressing Mets baseball we’ve seen in years. I won’t go crazy over a manager getting hired or fired until I see someone analyze some numbers and come up with a way of decoupling ‘managerial success’ and ‘the players that play the game on the field’. Most often the “great managers” have great teams with several future hall of famers (sorry LaRussa, you’re highly overrated you drunk bastard). Terry Collins has a team of scrubs with a couple nice players. He can only work with the talent he’s got on the field.
