This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The ” Flashback To 1979″ Edition

Congratulations to David Wright for tying Mets legend, Ed Kranepool for the Mets all time hit record.

Here are some things to consider when Kranepool retired in the final week of 1979.

Jimmy Carter was President.

A slice of pizza 85 cents.

Gas was 90 cents a gallon.

Tensions were running high with Iran.

And the Mets were the laughingstock of baseball – I guess some things just never change !!

“My Sharona” by the Knack was the number one song in the nation

And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday includes:

One of the most unfairly maligned Mets players ever, reliever from the ’80′s, Doug Sisk is 55 (1957).

Current Mets Assistant G.M., J.P. Ricciardi is 53 (1959).

The New York Mets purchased the contract of pitcher, Doc Medich from the Seattle Mariners on September 26, 1977. Medich would only appear in one game as a Met. He lost.

Mo Vaughn celebrated David Wright’s tying of the Mets All Time hit record by buying out the Keith Burger stand !!!

I liked ’79. Some fun guys on the team. And I was able to drive that year, so the world was my oyster!

Ha! I must be a bit older than you b/c when I got my license and first car, gas was about 60 cents a gallon.

1979….wasn’t that the second ‘gas crisis’ we lived through?
I remember the odd/even days for getting gas, or driving out to the stations on the parkway in Jersey as they were exempt from the odd/even restrictions – just had to pay more. It was either that or having to wait in line for an hour or better on my ‘odd’ day to fill up.

Fun times…right up there with following that ’79 team.

was it going to be on air? i’m in the middle of moving and not sure I’ll get a chance to enjoy that nonsense. :-(

I’m not sure it’s going to be on the air or not but it’s turned into a big to do now.

Keith is shaving it for charity – $10 grand but I can’t remember the charity right now. They’ve hired a professional barber to come to the park and do it.

I’m pretty sure The Krane was one of those guys who never officially retired, his contract was up and the Mets didn’t ask him back; neither did any team which could have selected him in the free agent draft as they called it then. He was only 34!

He then got in a group that was working up a deal to buy the Mets, only to be passed over for the Doubleday-Wilpons. Think for a moment how things would be different were it Ed Kranepool and not Fred Wilpon owning the club all this time.
