By the way if you remove the salaries from those 8 player to be determined slots the remaining balance is $6.9M to fill those 8 spots.

I don’t have a problem with an approximate 95 MIL payroll.
I do have a problem with it when two players alone are getting half of that for 2013, and we have to fill holes with the rest of the pennies that are left.
Wilpons need to throw another 10 MIL or so into the pot.

Here’s the question though. Do you feel confident that they would get that 10m back in return? It’s kinda like updating the tapestries before selling the house.

Maybe….little things like a fire going in winter and cookies baking in the oven have swayed a potential homeowner to buy a house.
I’m not saying just throw 10 MIL or so more in the pot for the sake of doing it. I’m suggesting if they set the payroll at say 95 MIL, but there is a trade that involves a player with a contract coming over that puts them over that 95 MIL – one they really feel could improve the team, then spend the money. Have to invest somewhat to get a better rate of return, right?

I agree. Budget is fine and all, but you have to put out a certain level of ML quality product (or at least try real hard to). And sometimes that means having more than a minimum wage guy filling a role.
Nickeas vs. a ML quality catcher, a real OF instead of some random shlub that never played out there (Turner?), stuff like that.
basically what they tried to do in the Pen with the guys brought in. Just hopefully more successfully!
And like MF noted, if a trade offer comes through where the talent fill is going to significantly help them now and in the future, they can’t turn it down simply because it adds a little to payroll in 2013. Remember, they have money coming off, so it could be just borrowing the 10mill from next year.
10mill is what, 200K people in the house (figuring each arse is worth $50). So yeah, the right moves can pay for themselves.

I sure hope they borrow some from next year. I can’t see how they make a full team without doing so. Shop Vac will get a mil, I’m sure to get some sort of serviceable OF will take a mil as well… You cannot expect to fill the rest of te spots with Rookies and min wage types and expect special things on the season.
Practically 50 mil invested in two busted up schleps. Sigh.

If they stick to the #, and don’t have the stones to blow it up and trade Wright/Dickey, then they absolutely have no expectation of special things happening. Just putting 25 men on the field (24.5 if Bay is back!) and playing 162 games.
if a miracle 1000-1 shot occurs and they make a run to the playoffs, wonderful, but that is not even on the list of goals for 2013.

acosta won’t be back.
it is also debatable counting buyouts (since technically, they don’t have to buy them out or they could vest), but they do get paid this calendar year, so for accounting purposes, they can. Flip side is, they then have more $ to spend in 2014, without having buyouts carried over.
what should however be backed out of that total is deferred payments. Johan has 5mill deferred each year, and the first payout of that is in 2014 (so of course, reduce payroll that year for 7 years!). But in 2013, you can in real terms reduce the total by $5mill.

they won’t. and they are not going to bother to try.
unless, and I don’t see it happening, they get stonewalled by Wright/Dickey, and realize they have to make a move. If those guys go, then all heck has to break lose to rebuild the roster.
but if the plan is to resign them and lock into another 5 years of mediocrity at best, then nothing else will happen.

Well hopefully next year will be a step forward from some of the guys like Davis and Harvey, etc and that will produce more exciting play and more wins. Then with being able to spend a little after 2013 the ticket sales will increase enough to begin to raise payroll again to go with a young core.

question: Is the player minimum going up? I’d imagine it will right?
Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things but I believe it was $420k in 2011 and $498k in 2012 right?
So that will cut the “budget” down another few thousand

True, but what if players sign minor league contracts or are already on minor league contracts. Isn’t their pay actually prorated based on the amount of time they are actually in the bigs?

So Duda, Tejada, Gee, Turner for sure are going to make more than 490k as estimated above.

Gee isn’t going to make $502,000 in 2012 and make $490,000 in 2013. So if you look at Tejada, last year $491k… so this year he won’t get re-signed for less… he won’t take a paycut prorated or not.
Which brings me to my next question – is Thole arb eligible? Are they projecting him to be a Super Two?
If so, I’d still be shocked if he makes $1.2m through arby or negotiation.

Yeah, Thole is arby eligible and got to remember those guys usually don’t take a pay cut.
My point wasn’t so much those guys as they now have MLB contracts. I am talking about guys who do not start the year on the 25 man roster and are in the minors on minor league contracts and their contracts are purchased at a later date.

I think they’d decline arbitration on Thole before paying him $1.2m to be honest. That’s a pretty high estimate. I’d be more comfortable with 750k ish.
