In our latest installment of “According To Sources” Matt Cerrone of SNY MetsBlog in a post today says he was told David Wright’s camp intends to “milk talks and draw things out until at least after the World Series, in hopes of reaching a better compromise at the last minute.”

- 10/6/2012 – it’s conceivable Wright and Dickey will have new deals in place, at least in principle, by the time the World Series begins later this month.
- 10/9/2012 – The Mets are expected to open negotiations with an offer for somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million for star third baseman David Wright.

hopefully Wright is perfectly fine with getting traded someplace he may not want to spend the summer at (Cleveland? Someplace worse?) because if you want to essentially play chicken, sometimes the truck hits you!
that assumes, of course, that the FO has to stones to add decisively and if it is clear talks aren’t going where they want, to ramp up the trolling on the trade market.
though really the WS is not much of a deadline, since the trade market might not heat up until December anyway. But, might as well troll him before other teams have made moves!
but, based on what they have shown so far, the FO has no stones to speak of, and will just roll over and whimper if Wright wants to play passive-aggressive, and end up heading into next year looking at Reyes part II

I would hope they’re smarter than that – or at least have learned from the Reyes scenario.
If Wright doesn’t want to re-sign or starts stringing them out into deep Nov., I believe they’ve got to seriously look to trade him then. If they can’t re-sign him, gotta strike while the iron is hot and get the most they can for him.
Not that I want him gone….
