If the Mets Keep Wright, Are The Dbacks Still A Trading Partner?

OK so forget my earlier trade of Wright for Justin Upton, we all know that was just throwing ideas out.  However, after a report from MLBTR today:

Diamondbacks Considering Trading Kubel Or Parra

It appears the Mets and Dbacks could and should be a fit for each other.

According to the article the Dbacks are willing to trade Chris Young, and one of either Kubel or Parra.

I will start with Chris Young, the Dbacks are said to be willing to chip in money for the CF.  Young makes 8.5M for 2013 and then is owed either a 1.5M buyout or an 11M contract in 2014.  The RIGHT hander had his worst season since 2009 this year and his value is at an all-time low.  Seems like a perfect fit.  Is it possible that the Mets could take on all of Young’s salary and buyout in return for the Dbacks taking back Frankie Frank? Arizona could use another bullpen guy and perhaps could link Frank’s performance on injury and inconsistent use.  Of course the Mets would have to send a decent prospect there way but not a top prospect in my opinion.

So that takes one spot, here’s where the deal gets interesting.  I would also try to pry away Parra for a package including Murphy.  So you increase the prospect being sent and throw in Murphy.

The trade would look something like this.

Francisco, Murphy and uh… Mejia for Young and Parra.

That would give you an OF of Duda/Bay, Young and Parra.  Certainly better than what we witnessed this year.  Of course this deal could also free up Duda to be traded for a 2B or SS as well and going with Kirk in the OF paired with the two new OF making a very solid defensive OF.  For Arizona it would give them the choice to play Murphy at 2B or 3B as well as shed the salary of Young.

Seems like a perfect fit…

I know coming from me the guy who wanted Fowler/Cuddy/EY Jr this is hard to accept but I don’t think that trade having any value to the DBacks at all.

First and foremost, they’d be taking Francisco because we want them to – not because they need him. So I don’t see why Arizona would do that. They have a club option on Putz for the same amount of money and they have Ziegler+Hernandez so spending another 6.5m on a 7-8 inning guy does them no good.

Murphy, okay we can debate his value forever. I love the guy as a gritty player but I think his value is low based on his fielding.

Mejia, fine – but you’re also assuming AZ likes the kid.

Chris Young plays in one of the best hitting fields in the game and he’s hitting terribly bad. In 885 games he’s a career .239 hitter with a .755 OPS and thats with the luxury of a hitter friendly park.

Parra is okay but if you need to give up Mejia for him then either Mejia isn’t as good as we hope or Parra is badly overrated.

Looking at Young’s splits, they didn’t concern me as badly.
Mejia, as I said uh… I have no idea which prospect they would want I am just throwing a name.

The FFF part, has more to do with the fact that they were going to have to eat some of Young’s contract so would you rather eat say 4M or get FFF and 2M in return in stead?

So the value to the Dbacks is that they shed Chris Young’s salary, get a starting 3B and a young pitcher.

The value to the Mets is that they remake the outfield based on speed and defense.

at least it is change. that’s something!

And please, Bay will not be on the OD roster. unless by some miracle he finds the fountain of roids (er, youth) in the off season, and lights Florida on fire all spring looking like the old Bay. Which I don’t thin is happening.

he will be the virgin tossed into the volcano to appease the masses.

  3. wanny

Can’t see either team being interested in this.

    1. TRS86

Wanny oh Wanny, can you explain why the Mets wouldn’t be interested in Chris Young our Parra?

      1. TRS86

        whoops, OR Parra.

      2. wanny

because chris young is expensive and he stinks.

and the dbacks want to pay him and take on francisco, an injured relief pitcher who pitched terribly and does not fill a burning need????

and the dbacks will do what with murphy? ryan wheeler is a legit prospect with a higher ceiling than murph at 3B.

        1. Pacific NorthTex

He does stink, but he bats RH, plays the OF decent and the D’Backs have roughly 5 OFs, with Upton, Kubel, Young, Parra and Eaton. Plus they have a decent OF prospect on the way. Makes sense for them to get eat most of the salary on Young in order to get something in return.

Now, the above said, I’m not sure they would want Frankie nor do I think that is the best move for the Mets BP. The Mets need a closer and Frankie should be in the 8th inning role. He’s done it before so I’m not worried about hurt feelings or nothing. So, if shipping off, say, Duda and another to get Young, I can certainly see the validity in it. Duda could be the backup to Goldschmidt and power off the bench for cheap for them.

  4. Pacific NorthTex

Ok, like the creativity. I’d throw mejia into about any deal. He serves no purpose for me. Can’t pitch out of the BP and doesn’t have the frame to start. That, my friends, is no mans land.

Not sold in Young or Parra, but they certainly do full needs and Young can be gone after this year, so that’s no big risk there.

Do we know what AZ’s needs are? I think most of their needs are positional, if I’m not mistaken. Other than Murph, not sure I see the matchup.

    1. Trs86

Could be Murphy and Vspin for all I care, just saying a prospect.

      1. Pacific NorthTex

        Murph, Vspin and Mejia. done.

We’d have to be prepped for re-signing Cedeno to be your everyday 2B (or a cedeno type). Or pray a whole lot Havens comes from no where to win the 2B spot. Not holding my breath on the 2nd option (oh, my puns are bad).

        1. Stick

I can live with that package. And sign someone like Cedeno just in case, but make it an open competition in ST. If havens can win it, give him the job.

    OT:

    Stupid Os.

    and HAHAHAHAHAHA Nationals.
That was some game I just watched.

    Carlos Beltran is a beast.
Now the Nats can join Strasburg on the golf course.

    1. darknova306

Carlos Beltran is THE BEST! As I’ve been telling Twitter all night :)

      1. Stickguy

I might need to wander over to the place of stupidity, and pint out to a few of the coeur their hypocrisy.

because they still deride DW for not getting Murphy in from 3rd against the cubs, yet now are calling Beltran the best ever, even though he was the most unclutch, gagging, choke artist in the single biggest Met AB of the last decade!

The ending of the Cards/Nationals game was fun to watch. It was the type of fun we as Mets fans haven’t witnessed since 2006 (even heartbreaks can be fun). With the Nats up by two runs in the top of the ninth and Beltran on third with two outs, Drew Storen, the Nationals closer, completely lost his composure and surrendered two walks followed by two hits to blow the game and series for the Nationals. I had a sentimental attachment to Davey Johnson because of his managing the great Mets teams of the 1980’s but in a game of this magnitude, when it’s all on the line, you can’t sit back and let your closer give up four runs in the ninth. I realize he’s the closer but this was not a mid-season game. You have to be proactive. There’s just too much riding on this one game. But then again my favorite manager was Sparky Anderson aka Capt. Hook and for a reason. With Anderson you probably would have seen three pitchers in the top of the ninth.

    1. srt

Not sure I understood Davey’s decision to leave Gio out there for 5 innings either. He wasn’t that sharp and gave up 3 of those runs, plus his control was erratic. I suppose he pushed him so he could get the win, but it was all for naught anyway.

      I’ve seen this script before.
Nationals had the Cards on the ropes 3 times in the 9th, down to their last strike. Cardinals just would not die.

    2. darknova306

Carlos Beltran was just too much for the Natinals to overcome. His greatness is just that profound.

      1. Stickguy

then why did he choke when the mets actually needed him to earn his contract?

        1. wanny

in that series vs. the cards he hit .296 .387 .667.

          his career postseason is .375 .488 .817 .

He can hardly be classified as a choker because he got fooled by a nasty curve ball in one at bat against a guy who has proven to be one of the top pitchers in mlb.

          1. Stickguy

I was being snarky. Would have been more fun doing it to the morons in the cage that live elsewhere, but they are nto worth the time.

but by the rules, 1 AB is all it takes.

  7. Dave

Personally, I would rather have Murphy than Duda…..Dan Murphy is a very good hitter, is improving defensively, is a good clubhouse guy, and has a great work ethic.

    1. Stickguy

the big difference is the power potential that Duda has, which just needs to be unleashed. Mets are woefully short in that department, but do have quite a few slap hitters.

  8. Stickguy

I was rooting for the nats. Partly because I can’t stand the Cards, but also because my sister is a Nats fan (season ticket holder too) that was freezing her butt off in the top of the upper deck. And that was my only shot at WS tickets!

Now have to root for the Giants and Tigers to win. because I despise the Yankees too, and I always love to see an underdog or team that has not been there in a while get a shot (must be the Met fan in me coming out).

plus, I would love to stick it to Selig, and have 2 teams few people outside their area care about, and the chance for snow.

as long as the Yankees get eliminated though, that is the most important aspect.

    1. srt

For sure I’m rooting for the Tigers. I actually think they have a good shot at beating the Yankees.

Of the Giants and the Cards, I’ll now take whoever has the best chance of beating the Yanks, should they get in. –Which is probably the Cards. After watching all these games, the Giants offense does not impress me. Still a little surprised they beat the Reds. Might be the loss of Cueto was a big blow to their momentum.
