According To Sources: The Wright & Dickey Off Season Chronicles 10/13/2012

In our latest installment of “According To Sources” Andy Martino of the NY Daily News in an article today says “people involved in the process” told him that the Mets could schedule a meeting and begin formal contract negotiations next week. He also says one Mets source told him that it’s “Too early to tell,” if it’s still possible for either player to be signed this month.

I guess Andy Martino’s source didn’t read what Mike Puma’s source said.
To borrow from Timex Social ClubLook at all these sources surroundin’ me every day.

According To Sources History

  • 10/6/2012 – it’s conceivable Wright and Dickey will have new deals in place, at least in principle, by the time the World Series begins later this month.
  • 10/9/2012 – The Mets are expected to open negotiations with an offer for somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million for star third baseman David Wright.
  • 10/10/2012 – David Wright’s camp intends to milk talks and draw things out until at least after the World Series, in hopes of reaching a better compromise at the last minute.
  • 10/13/2012 – Mets could schedule a meeting and begin formal contract negotiations next week & it’s too early to tell if it’s still possible for either player to be signed this month.

A Met since day one, and I don’t care what they do with Wright. I f they sign him, we are stuck with a 20 H/R a year 3rd basemen and if they trade him, thats what about we will get back in H/R’s anyway?

Welcome but why so hung up on HR?

And why the slash and apostrophe in H/R’s?

This wins some sort of excessive punctuation award I would say.

Three letters and TWO unnecessary pieces of punctuation?

        Bravo!

If I understand this correctly an extensions Wright and Dickey sign would not kick into until the 2014 season, correct?

The payroll projection figure they’ve put out there already includes Wright’s 16 MIL option and Dickey’s 5 MIL?

    1. Stick

yeah, the 95 or so and 10 mill to spend has dickey and wright factored in at their option prices.

nothing to stop them of course from tearing that up as part of a new deal, maybe giving them less so they can have more flexibility for 2013.

      1. srt

        Ah…O.K.
I wasn’t sure if it was an option to tear up the existing contract – effectively negating next year’s option – and put a new contract in place for 2013.

        Oh…and go Tigers!

      2. srt

Although I have to think giving either less – especially Dickey – isn’t going to fly.

        1. Trs86

I have no idea why teams do it but what was the reasoning for the low first year salary for Bay but large signing bonus? I can only imagine it has something to do with when it is paid?

The Yankees score four runs in the bottom of the ninth on two run homeruns by I.Suzuki and Ibanez. This reminds me of what the Yankees used to do way back in the 1950’s. They would always pick up aging players that once they dressed in the pinstripes would somehow revert to their youthful prowess. It’s happening again.

the tiny dimensions to RF certainly helped, especially Ichiro. Pretty sure my son’s Babe Ruth field was almost as deep to RF, and his HS field is deeper.

      1. gategem

Stop crying over the dimensions of the ball field. What makes you think large ballparks yield a more exciting game? Think of the old Yankee Stadium where it was 297ft or so (I’m doing this by memory and I am 69 years old) down the right field line and 457ft or so to left center. Many people would say that Mickey Mantle had the benefit of that ballpark but Mantle’s homeruns were crushed. And remember Joe DiMaggio played his career as a right-handed hitter in a ballpark that was definitely favorable to left-handed hitters. Also Ebbets field was a bandbox yet people pine over it as if it was the Mecca of baseball fields. The old Polo-Grounds allowed 256ft or so homeruns if you pulled it but it was impossible to hit one out to center-field where they had the club houses. As another example consider Fenway Park and the left field wall distance. Fenway gives right handed hitters a decided advantage but no one cries over it. You tailor your team for your field. BTW Camden Yards is a bandbox and the Orioles hit 127 homeruns there, only eleven less than the Yankees in Yankees Stadium, yet no one cries about it. It’s part of what makes baseball great.

        1. gategem

BTW one of the reasons the Brooklyn Dodgers were beaten by the Yankees almost every time they met was because the Dodgers were a predominately right handed hitting power team that played in a small ball park and the old Yankee Stadium negated that right handed power. And did we cry about it. You bet we did!

    OT:

Is every post season game going to be extra innings?

Just finished watching this Tigers/Yankees game.
Tigers are really lucky they pulled this out. Should have won it in 9. LOL Valverde.

Jeter injured and that didn’t look good. Looked bad enough to say he’s probably done for post season.

    1. srt

Jeter – fractured ankle. Done for this post season.

Here’s an interesting side story. Every year that Kentucky has won the NCAA basketball championship has also been a year where the Yankees have won the WS. Will this year be the end of that streak?

        1. kingman 26

Incorrect–in 1948 the Indians won it all.

And 2012–the Tigers will as I have a bet on them to.

          1. gategem

Thank you for correcting me. i shouldn’t believe everything I read in Newsday and I shouldn’t post it without doing my research.

          2. kingman 26

Hey, no offense my esteemed friend, and believing Newsday is indeed the culprit here!

  5. joe gomes

It is beginning to look like the Reyes negotiations.

    1. Stickguy

not really to me. biggest difference of course is that Wright can’t walk next month. Plus, they actually seem to be negotiating real $$ with him. Though the flip side is, they can’t let other teams set the market now for a contract either.

      1. kingman 26

        Totally irrelevant comparison.

There were no Reyes negotiations as the Mets had zero desire to re-sign him.

        1. srt

I think stick was saying Reyes was hell bent on going to FA and Wright isn’t eligible for FA.
So if they wanted to, either side could drag this out all winter with not competition from other teams.

From what I’m reading though, the Mets want to do this quick. If it’s apparent that Wright won’t extend at their price, have to think they’ll be looking to trade him over the winter.

          1. Stick

yeah, my point was that being an actual FA, and being under contract for next year, are much different situations. Knog could certainly be correct though about them not wanting Reyes. Me, I think they did, but wanted him at a lot lower price.

that would be why they told him to test the market. They were going to “insult” him anyway, so why bother? Once he got the Marlin’s offer they had no intention of matching.

          2. Trs86

I agree Stick, they wanted him at their price most likely factoring in exactly what he would profit them and anything over would result in a loss.

          3. Stick

have to also keep in mind the timing. They would have had to figure out how to pay him in 2012 and 2013, when they apparently have zippo money to spend.

But Dickey and Wright, they aren’t hitting until 2014, when there is money to play with. Big, Big Big difference there for the team.

  6. Joe Gomes

Is the Reyes non-negotiations all over again.
This team has no hope of winning as long as the Wilpon’s own it. NONE.

    1. TX

Well, they are going to own this team, come Hell or high water, for a long time. So, it’s probably best for you to root for another team if you aren’t into S&M.
