The Sunday Question

Watching baseball right now just reminds me of just how far away the Mets are from these playoff teams.

That being said…..Today’s question is:  Since the Mets are in such dire need of outfield help, would you want Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher patrolling the Citi Field next year

    In a word, no.

Watching all these Yankee post season games, I’m wondering how these guys even won their division. Only conclusion I came to was in the first half this aging team was fine. They were fresh and still in good condition. Second half they started showing their age. Hot dog days of summer, the grind – the body starts wearing down a bit.

Granderson looks like he only knows how to bat one way – swing for the fences. I think he’s got like 10 KS already.
Swisher I just don’t really like and think he’s overrated. Don’t think he’d fit in without a lineup of all power hitters around him. That and what the heck is he always smiling at?

you also can’t ask the question without the caveat of the large contracts they carry (or will, is curtis a FA too?), so you would be spending money there that could go elsewhere. Bourne? Vickey for less? any other options instead? Not that I want either one of those guys.

Actually, I would take BJ upton at 1/2 the contract of one of those Yankees.

The Yankees were decimated by injuries. Without the abundance of talent on the team they would not have had the best record in the AL. Some of their players are in the declining phase of their careers but Cano and Granderson are in their prime and seem to be pressing. It happens.

What is it with the Cardinals? They squeak into the playoffs and then elevate their play.

I don’t know what that magic is with the Cardinals.
Wouldn’t be surprised right now to see them win it all.

i think the WS is going to wind up being the Tigers vs. the Cards.

if the other choice is Torres and Bay, hell yeah. Though that is not saying much, since there are random college players that I would rather see out there instead of those 2.

actually, neither one does much for me. Sewisher has a decent game, and Granderson does hit a lot of HRs, but I have no faith that he will keep it up if he moved to the Mets.

Oh, and nice play in the OF by the man of the question in the 12th. I did not see the end of the game, but watched the clips this AM. ON mlb.com, they ran all 3 calls (home/away/national) in one clip, and Sterling kept saying it was ichiro, until someone finally corrected him. Had to laugh at that.

no matter what the relative records and playoff aspirations of the 2 teams are, how could anyone willingly give up gary/keith/ron for suzy and sterling, and whatever other crap they have on broadcasts?

    1. gategem

If you’re a Yankees fan you listen to their broadcasters. Anyway it’s not about the broadcasters. It’s all about the team their announcing for. I can easily live with lousy broadcasters if the team is good.

Like Stick said, if it was Granderson and Swisher vs. Bay and Torres, it’s a no brainer. But I would rather they spend the mythological money it would take to get those 2 on other players. BJ, Bourne, etc.

Hell no on either of them.

No way, no chance, no how. Expensive aging players who strike out constantly?

No f***ing way on either of those chumps.

And it is totally irrelevant anyway, as there is precisely zero chance the team will spend anything close to that on anyone aside from Wright, which will also be a massive waste.

Right now, keeping Dickey and not trading Niese/Harvey/Wheeler is really all that matters. And also, there is some hope in watching to see if Parnell/Mejia/Familia might be the beginning of a very solid bullpen. If so, there will be hope for the future.

2013 will be another year–aside from the possibly excellent rotation–of mediocrity, bad offense, and no chance to finish above 4th.

But there is hope for 2014 if they keep developing what could be a really good pitching staff.

    1. Stickguy

I agree. 1/2 way. They should shop Dickey to see if a team will bite hard (oh, a pun there!), and give them a couple of pieces which can be added to the foundation. So hard to predict what dickey, at 39? in 2014, will be doing. And the corollary to that, if 1 more SP steps up by then, they can still have a very strong rotation.

I put it in the give to get, strength (if not excess) to fill weakness, and looking past 2013 category.

That, to me, is why trading Dickey and retaining Wright is the way to go forward. Re-sign Wright and trade Dickey to Toronto for D’acatcher and some extra stuff. Note, if Wright want $159 million, he can be traded too. But if signed the same extension as Zimmerman, that works for me.

nothing to do with the question, but man, today was the perfect sports day for me.

Yankees go down again to dig a big hole. Eagles blow a big late 4th quarter lead and lose, then the Giants dominate the niners.

    Perfect all around.

and even the Jets won for the poor suffering Jet fans.

Hell, even Miami won for Knog. And Seattle won for PacNorTex

LOL Yankees should be a new hashtag.

Seriously, that offense this post season is awful. Reminds me of the second half of the season Mets.

Are we finally seeing the beginning of the end of that Yankee dynasty?

      1. Stickguy

I certainly hope so. but of course, don’t count your chickens. Like with the Phils, I won’t believe they are dead until the other team is spraying champagne.

but it will be interesting to see what they do (how many guys they can/will move, and I don’t honestly know what FAs they have other than swisher. Granderson?) and what big names they can import.

Also can’t tell what the ankle injury does to Jeter. That can sap the rest of his range easily and maybe worse.

but, if they turn into the 2012 Phillies, would not break my heart!

        1. srt

Swisher, Russel Martin and Kuroda , Granderson are those I know are FAs.
Mariano is another since he was set to retire last year but vows to come back now after that injury.
Throw Pettitte in there as well, who said he wants to pitch for them next season.

Getting the payroll under 189 MIL as Cashman vows to do is going to be interesting with the holes he’s got to fill.

    2. gategem

The Cowboys also lost a gut wrenching game. So I agree that from a sports perspective it was a perfect day.
