Former Mets & Yankee Managers Named Sporting News AL and NL Managers Of The Year

The Sporting News who all this week have been announcing a different award every day starting with Monday when they named Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout and Arizona Diamondbacks lefthander Wade Miley the 2012 AL & NL Rookies of the Year. Then on Tuesday they named San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey and Chicago White Sox DH Adam Dunn the 2012 AL & NL Comeback Players of the Year.

Now today they named former New York Mets manager Davey Johnson and former New York Yankees manager Buck Showalter the 2012 AL & NL Managers of the Year.

Johnson led the Washington Nationals to a MLB Best 98 wins this season and a playoff appearance. Showalter led the Baltimore Orioles to a 93 win season and eliminated the former team he managed for the Texas Rangers in the 1st ever Wild Card elimination game and took his other former managerial employer the New York Yankees to a 5th game before being eliminated himself.

Off Topic: Twins I guess not surprisingly did not pick up Matt Capps option and instead bought him out.

Would he qualify as one of those gambles the Mets may look at for the pen in 2013?

Also in the “According to Sources – Miami Marlins edition” sources say,,

“…pitchers Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle are on the trading block this offseason. Johnson’s contract appears to fit into the Cubs’ short-term plans. The 28-year-old pitcher has one year remaining on a long-term contract at $ 13.750 million for 2013. The Marlins will look for younger prospects and as much payroll relief they can get in each deal they make. ”

If it turns out to be true then what exactly are the Marlins doing? On the surface this does not suggest they are retooling for 2013 and if that is the case then I can only imagine what the citizens of Miami will say after all the talk of this new image Loria talked about.

especially combined with the whole legal mess around the stadium financing.

But I don’t recall ever seeing a team go from all in to rebuild quite this fast.

Sounds to me like Loria bought all those shiny new toys to go along with his shiny new stadium and when they failed to bring in fans – along with the team heading towards last place mid season – he just started dumping salary and trading pieces to get younger prospects back.

It just smacks of Loria not caring about the team at all and just looking to make the most amount of money he can.

This is the same owner who had his hand slapped by MLB a few years ago for not reinvesting any monies made back into the team. That’s what resulted in the JJ contract extension. Now….he’s looking to dump that final year.

I know I complain about the Wilpons but IMO, they don’t come close to the award for the worst owner(s) in baseball.

making a profit is the first (and probably #2-73) priority for any owner, no matter what they say publicly.

and at least Loris recognizes the situation, and reacts quickly and decisively. None of this half in or half out, are we or aren’t we crap. He does not dawdle on the pot!

Agreed, and honestly truth be told there is a case to be made that the Mets should have done the same thing after either 2008 but for sure after 2009. Bail, Bail!!!! instead of adding to a sinking ship.

          1. Stickguy

I would agree to that. Certainly after 2009.

think of how different it could be now if instead of adding bay, they had looked to reload a bit from the bottom to build a new foundation. Once you knock over the first domino, who knows where it ends.

I have said for years to either rebuild or go for it, because they did not have enough talent or money to fence straddle and try to rebuild on the fly while still competing. That usually leads to disaster if you are on a budget.

          2. TRS86

Yup after 2009, say you know what this isn’t working. We have a Beltran, Johan, etc for sale and we might still have Reyes and Wright both to build around now instead of building in 2014.

        2. srt

Definitely agree about the profit but Loria took it one step further. He was pocketing profits that he shouldn’t be. There’s some rules as an MLB owner that mandate some of that ‘shared’ money (I believe) has to be reinvested in the team. Loria was trying to skirt that.

          1. Stickguy

yeah, that is why he was “forced” to sign Johnson to a big deal.

not saying that he is not a snake, but all of the owners are pretty much the same, they just hid it better.

    3. Prismo

I’m confident the Marlins lost a ton of money last season and they are 100% backtracking and getting rid of as much payroll as possible. Jose Reyes must feel so…awkward.

      1. TRS86

Prismo, if he feels awkward then he should fire his agent. If his agent didn’t tell him what the obvious eventual outcome would be then shame on the agent.

        1. Stickguy

Reyes is no dummy. He knew that he would at minimum have a couple years to hang out living the south beach life, and when he got traded (I agree with SRT, that was always a definite!) he would get his 20mill or so each year.

          1. Prismo

Yep. And while we know the Mets’ offer wouldn’t be close to what the Marlins gave him, I bet they wouldn’t have had a problem giving him a no-trade clause.

        2. srt

I’m wondering if his agent would give him a heads up. The more money Reyes gets, the more money his agent gets.
That and I’m willing to bet no one was topping that Miami offer, even if they played it out a bit more.

So either way, it comes down to the money and nothing but the money. Maybe Reyes doesn’t really care about where he plays as long as he gets his money. Not all do.

Had to chuckle when I saw the article about Reyes having courtside seats to the pre season NBA (Nats/Knicks?) game last night. I guess if he’s not playing in the WS, he doesn’t much care who is?
