Wright Discussion Intensifies?

NY Mets, David Wright plan to talk contract negotiations as early as this week

I hesitated to even post this story because 99% of us have already voiced our opinion on this matter over and over again.  However, due to the fact that this decision dictates the entire off-season plans I suppose there is no way around it.

At the very least, a fresh place to rehash all our arguments is appreciated.

While we all have our opinions, most cynical, you are correct in that this is the fulcrum to the offseason. I guess as we sit around and whistle Dixie, might as well do that together

The next domino would be when they trade Dickey for Trumbo and a prospect… ;-)

The more I think about it, the more likely the Angels would never do it. :(

Well, considering kendry morales is prob on the way out, as is torii hunter, they’ll most likely be holding onto Trumbo.

There is always Texas and Toronto…

I haven’t heard about Kendry being on the way out. He is still gonna be relatively cheap and is still arbitration eligible.

Well, he’s a FA in 2014, plays 1B and DH, they have some guy Pujols, and Trumbo fits the 1B bill much better & cheaper than Morales. Not saying Morales is on the way out this season, but he will be after this one. Especially as he’ll be in getting up there in salary and is represented by Boras.

a few years ago, Real and I were jonesing for the Mets to pick up Delgados option, and trade him, and get Kendry back from the Angels. This of course was prior to the season when Carlos became a cripple, and Morales a start.

If only he could play the OF…

Actually, it’s just the discussion of speaking about possibly talking to Wright’s agent and then maybe chatting up some possibilities for an extension that have intensified.

    It’s very intense.

Do you think these writers just rearrange some sentences and resubmit the same stories?

maybe swap out “source close to the team” for “person familiar with the Mets thinking” and such?

Hell, I could probably whip up a little Mad Libs beat writer column if I was so inclined.

I think this means they have moved b=past the conceptual stage of discussing when they should discuss when to start talking, and are actually now talking about when to start talking.

I believe that sums up where we are at?

man though, I wish they had brought in Sandy as a Sr. “Mr. fix it” guy to deal with the organizational financial crap, and brought in a young gun (someone mentioned Friedman, Daniels could have worked, and probably a selection of others) to be the actual GM. Someone that would have come in with the mission to rebuild the roster/talent base as quickly as possible (within the payroll cap), to get the team moving in the right direction.

the 2 activities IMO did not have to be mutually exclusive. And it was the perfect cover to move anyone and everyone.

would it have worked? We will never know. Would it have been more exciting? Hell yeah. Was the risk/reward spread bigger? Double hell yeah.

but, to use a sports (and Mets!) metaphor, better to go down swinging to win the game, then to take a called strike 3.

IOW, I would rather they went for it and flamed out in a fun ball of glory, than locked in guaranteed mediocrity for years to come with very little (and no) sustained upside potential (to quote Dickey V.)

Except no young, in-demand GM would have taken a job which was clearly one where there would be zero flexibility to do pretty much anything, aside from the possibility of grossly overpaying your “Face of the 4th Place Franchise.”

Only fired failed retreads like DePodesta and Ricciardi want to be here Stick.

      1. Prismo

Exactly. Who wants to be the GM when you’re told by Wilpon “Okay, so we have an entire sub-par bullpen and half our starting position players are well below average…. Over the next 3 off-seasons you have under $10MM each year to build us a winner or you’ll look like a total dunce. aaaaaaand GO!”

        1. Stickguy

except that was not what I wanted. It was “OK< this place is forked up, you have free reign to build us a winner, and every player is fair game. Now go start wheeling and dealing". "just don't spend more than 100mill on the payroll of course!"

and yes, this would have(most likely) meant Wright being traded, along with Dickey, to start with. Those being the obvious first dominos.

      2. Stickguy

There are plenty of young hotshots waiting for their chance. Some with experience, some wanting to be the next big thing.

and it is still NYC, with potential to build a “big market/big money” powerhouse (as long as you can build the foundation!) as opposed to having to go toil away in someplace like Houston, or SD, or many other cities that never will have attention or a budget to work with.

and if they were brought in knowing they essentially had free reign to go hog wild? Even better!

So IMO you are underestimating the attraction of that theoretical job (coming into a place to build from ground zero where you can become a star).

All speculation of course, since it is obvious that Bud and Fred wanted ultra conservative, take your time, don’t do anything rash, conservatism (so they brought in another ancient guy to give it to them).

and they have gotten their wish, consistent sustained mediocrity for years to come.

        1. kingman 26

No young hotshot is taking the Met GM job with the Wilpon financial situation.

          1. Stickguy

this we will have to just disagree on.

and you underestimate how easy it is to get a job in the GM fraternity!

and even Sandy still has more money to work with than 1.2 the other teams in the major leagues.

There’s a horror moving coming out about Jason Bay, I think. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1713476/

this discussion, and reading around some net sites, makes me said. Specifically, the “what if” trade scenarios bandied about.

yes, I know many are flat out ridiculous, but many are probably doable, and some outright creative. And many, many different ways to go to improve the team ST and LT.

the wistful part? Knowing this team has no intention (desire/creativity/balls, whichever it is) to actually try and do some of them. and if all we get is pre-spending all the 2013 money off the books now by re-signing DW and Dickey, it will be even worse since next off season is locked into doing nothing too.
