The Sunday Question

I will apologize for no Sunday Question this week….I’ve been in the dark, literally and figuratively for the past 5 days due to Hurricane Sandy.

Now I now how the Pilgrims lived.

I hope everyone is safe and warm and have a place to eat this morning.

I will help. Lets see, the Sunday question this week is:

what % likelihood do you give that the Mets will sign Wright and/or Dickey, and what is your opinion on whether they should?

    1. kingman 26

50% they sign Wright, 25% they sign Dickey.

Signing Wright to a deal like the one rumored will turn out to make Omar’s deals look good, and letting Dickey go in the middle of his (granted, late) prime will also turn out to be a disaster, as we will watch him have several more very good years as good as his last three have been (maybe not at 2012 level, but certainly at 2010-2011 levels–which is very valuable for a bad, pitching-dependent team).

I fully expect the team to make the wrong decision on both counts, to do nothing to improve the team again, and for them to finish 4th or 5th in 2013.

hard to argue with that, since so far they have not really done anything you can say is positive (outside of trading Beltran, which was an absolute given to happen, just fortunate to get what could be a good return).

the only positive I can give this bunch is that, while they have done nothing good yet, they also have not done anything that could end up being an anchor for the future. But, that could be about to change!

“they also have not done anything that could end up being an anchor for the future.”

Signing Wright and not signing Dickey will be the dual anchors that will sink the RMS Met Titanic for years.

Wright will continue his Face of 4th Place and Face of 2nd Half Collapse performance, and letting R.A. get away (when this Dickey should be carefully handled and extended) will completely change the rotation’s potential and diminish it from being potentially among the league’s best to simply being pretty good. In addition it will remove the amazing, mature veteran leadership a rotation consisting of Niese/Harvey/Gee/Wheeler will sorely need.

Johan can advise on endorsing checks and how to spend time wisely during long, annual in-season vacations, but he will surely be gone to another team or the DL just in time for the 5th Annual Second Half Collapse.

Fasten your seat belts my friends–we STILL have yet to reach bottom with this group!

” and for them to finish 4th or 5th in 2013″

        and beyond…

Welcome to the early 90s once again, just with fewer players to hate.

Ho Gonzo. sorry to hear you are in the extend outage area. Thankfully down here in south Jersey we (mostly) were spared.

as to the question, I think it is now 75% Wright, 25% dickey (that they are signed).

And my opinion: they should look to trade them both to do a massive remodel of this team, and try to set it up with a new foundation for the future. And try ti sign Ike to a deal like Neise got (at least before next off season).

and with the money freed up, they can plug any rermaining ST oles with higher quality filler pieces (Cody Ross, AJP, whomever that may be)

    I have a Sunday question:

Hey TRS, how does it feel to be a year older?

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY

  4. kingman 26

Best to you Gonzo–my parents in northern NJ have also been without everything since the storm.

  5. darknova306

90% they sign Wright, 5% the sign Dickey, 100% chance of that combination of events being a disaster. Be prepared for a perpetual dogfight for 4th place for years to come.

    1. kingman 26

The Marlins surely will be significantly improved. And there’s zero chance we finish ahead of WASH/ATL/PHIL.

If we trade Dickey, last place will be ours.

      1. Stick

Now, you are starting to sound like what you claimed SRT and I were like about the Phils declining!

why exactly are they going to be drastically improved this year?

        1. kingman 26

We finished 5 games ahead of them, they had a disaster in Bell, a season-long distraction in Ozzie, and as an organization they constantly come up with good young players.

I think they will be a .500 team in 2013 and the Mets will not.

To me, just the subtractions they have already made and another year of development from their kids should be good for a 5 game improvement.

And I think that the Mets will probably be the same or worse.

          1. Stick

we shall see. But if there is one team that I would refuse to bet my own money on (predicting what they will end up doing) it is the Marlins.

anything from Astros to WS is possible with that group.

    2. TX

I’ll say 90% they sign Wright, 25% they sign Dickey and 50% chance they trade Dickey, 0% chance they trade wright. Holding onto Dickey is the start of many a bad sentence, but is also not going to be all that bad for the Mets. they can offer a qualifying deal, and if he walks, they get the pick. And that is assuming he is still pitching awesome. And if he isn’t, well, welcome to a 40 year old pitcher who is starting his decline.

So, meanwhile, back at the farm…

  7. darknova306

So the blog has joined the team’s front office in Aruba for the offseason?

  8. Stick

It is the Mai Tai plan.

and hey, you can’t rush progress, right?

though honestly, with so little going on, what do these guys spend their days doing? Especially the assistant GMs (ricco and I forget if the other is tweedle dee or dum).

Really seems like the 1-2 minor housekeeping moves could be made by Ricco working part time. And who knows, maybe they are!

      The Real Dirty Mai Tai!

  9. Prismo

The authors apologize for not making daily posts about players the Mets obviously cannot afford along with random pictures of an empty CitiField or David Wright’s cup on a bench.

    1. Prismo

Sorry, and for not posting links to articles from other websites without adding any new information of our own.

      1. TX

even just an open thread or something would be nice. Killing Kong diatribes are always an awesome way to start the day, but if not that, then at least a fresh sheet of paper to spew forth randomness would be cool.

        1. Prismo

          Your wish has been granted.

    2. darknova306

And I spit on your apology! Hah! :)
