According To Sources: The Wright & Dickey Off Season Chronicles 11/7/2012

We are back again providing you with our latest addition to “According To Sources” for a 2nd consecutive day courtesy of Andy McCullough of the The Star-Ledger. In a post published just a little while ago McCullough reports that regarding the Dickey contract extension talks a “person with knowledge of the discussions indicated there could be a resolution before the month ends”.

According To Sources History

  • 10/6/2012 – it’s conceivable Wright and Dickey will have new deals in place, at least in principle, by the time the World Series begins later this month.
  • 10/9/2012 – The Mets are expected to open negotiations with an offer for somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million for star third baseman David Wright.
  • 10/10/2012 – David Wright’s camp intends to milk talks and draw things out until at least after the World Series, in hopes of reaching a better compromise at the last minute.
  • 10/13/2012 – Mets could schedule a meeting and begin formal contract negotiations next week & it’s too early to tell if it’s still possible for either player to be signed this month.
  • 10/25/2012 – Contract negotiations between the Mets and Wright & Dickey remain very preliminary and have not advanced to the point of talking years or dollars and they are still talking about when to really get talking.
  • 11/6/2012 – The Mets are “not close” to a resolution with either Wright or Dickey.
  • 11/7/2012 – Discussions regarding Dickey’s contract extension could see “a resolution before the month ends”.

It looks like Dickey has been convinced about the Mets future plans based on quotes in that post.

Dickey who according to the post was being honored by the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter was quoted to say,

“He’s (I am going to presume he means Alderson) convinced me, …I think the Mets are moving in the right direction, that’s for sure. I certainly want to be part of that solution.”

    He goes on to say,

“Sandy’s got a very intentional plan, that he’s been disciplined to try to implement… And hopefully the pieces fall in place, and we’re competitive very quickly.”

Though one has to take into account this is being said in the midst of contract extension talks.

Man hard to decide what to do with those quotes.

From my end I am keeping this in the context of when it is being said. Midst contract talks. So I am not reading into it much other than noting that he made a point before the season ended of wanting to know the direction of the team and it seems at least for now that he has gotten some answers regarding it.

        1. gategem

IOW he will be traded at the winter meeting in Nashville.

I still say trade his ass and try to keep the plan moving forward quicker.

the quotes? Well, since the only thing Sandy did was cut Bay, that certainly says something about what the rest of the team thought about what having him next year was going to do for them!

      1. Stick

to expand that, what really changed? They got rid of Bay, but I was on record as guaranteeing that already (and remember, I am always right!). Plus he was gone after 2013 no matter what.

so, the only thing that really changed was they might have some more money to funnel into 2013 payroll. How much, who knows. 5 mill? 8?

so, will that mean they now can sign shopvac and an OF like a ross type for a year? Maybe not him, but someone in that 5-6 mill range for 1 year? IOW, a better stop gap? If so, seems to be status quo.

Or, does this suddenly mean they are signing BJ Upton? Bourne? anyone that you can say is part of a new better future?

Trying to decide what the chances are that the same team (with Wright and Dickey) + 1 piece like that will be a serious playoff contender in 2013.

They got rid of Bay quicker than I expected, but they also keep him on the books longer while freeing up an undisclosed amount of money for 2013. Considering this team isn’t 1 or 2 players away from contention (barring a Ceetarian miracle), I fail to see how it’s some sort of uber praiseworthy event.

As you say “what really changed?” Well, not much. Impatient fans were satiated briefly and the team can lower its debt by a few mil this year. Hey, at least we have new things to talk about… I guess. :)

Off Topic: I cheated and just read Paul’s post for tomorrow and let me say you do not want to miss reading it.

    It’s awesome.

    1. Stick

that prop 64 or whatever the number is really got him excited I guess?

      1. Mr North Jersey

LoL, Paul was going to write a post but 1st he got high.

Jeez I haven’t heard this one in like a decade, awesome.

I haven’t been keeping up with my favorite mets blogs much these days (oops) just checking in to see if anyone has heard from srt yet? I’m a worry-er.

Nothing yet. We’ve all been worried.

They go up, they go down…

Now it implies that they are not showing much interest in re-signing him. LOL. Wheeeee, this is fun.

That being said, what would be the thoughts if the Mets say traded Dickey for my man Trumbo or Andrus and then signed a FA pitcher to slot in the middle instead of the top. Examples as high as Sanchez or as low as reclamation deals like Haren.

    1. wanny

andrus would be a home run. but i cant imagine texas doing it.

trumbo is overrated. pass. lousy defensively. had one good half season.

haren will not be paid like a reclamation project.

      1. TRS86

You may be right. Kingman and I already debated Trumbo but I think his RH pop and under control would be a great fit for LF but we can move on from that one. I agree I would love to get Andrus. Not sure how desperate Texas is for starters and currently I think they trade Andrus for Upton and then sign a FA SP.

Haren is an interesting case. I have no idea how much he will get but I would not be surprised to see a one year incentive laden deal.

    Round and Round:
11:51pm: Andy Martino of The New York Daily News says there is still “healthy internal debate” about Dickey within the organization and that nothing is final (Twitter links). They could look to act quickly if progress towards a contract extension is made, however.

11:34am: The Mets are showing little interest in signing R.A. Dickey to an extension and are discussing the knuckleballer in trades, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Earlier this morning Joel Sherman of The New York Post reported that there is still a significant gap in contract talks, so the team started to gauge trade interest.

In case you missed it, I had a minor spat with Mike Puma of the Post this morning on Twitter. In a September piece he wrote that a source claimed there was a “zero percent chance” the Mets would be rid of Jason Bay this offseason.

His response when called out on it? “I guess the Mets may have changed their mind.”

No accountability. Blames it on the source, blames it on the Mets. To me 0% means 0%. There’s no leeway there.

Obviously I don’t REALLY care that much about nitpicking stories about Jason Bay specifically, but the overall principle of the thing.

So the moral is – the beat writers take whatever they hear from sources and publish it. They don’t care if it’s true or not, and they’ll just say the Mets changed their minds if it isn’t. Basically, I don’t believe a word anyone says about Dickey.

      1. gategem

Why should we expect the journalistic ethics and integrity on the back pages of newspapers to be any different from those on the front pages?

      2. wanny

Puma reported what a source told him. Puma is not to blame if that source was wrong or changed their mind. You even noted that Puma reported it as a source’s claim — not Puma’s own claim.
