Alderson Says That Regarding Wright & Dickey, Mets Need To Have A Little More Clarity Between Thanksgiving & Winter Meetings | Updated

To update an earlier post that had tweets about statements the Mets GM made regarding contract extension talks. I am including the full quotes here from an article written by Marc Carig of Newsday.

Carig quotes Alderson to say,

“Between Thanksgiving and the winter meetings, the winter meetings themselves, we need to have a little more clarity than we have now, certainly,”

Clarig goes on to say that clarity could come in either the form of new contracts or both players being put on the trading block. He then quotes Alderson to say in his article,

“At some point, we need resolution on these discussions to be able to move on,” he said. “But that time is not now. It’s still very early.”

Alderson later says regarding the negotiations,

“We wanted to get started early and maybe reach a conclusion early in these negotiations,” Alderson said. “We did get started early, but these things take on a life of their own. So I’m not surprised in either case that things have gone on as they have.”

I wish he talked less. He’s a little too candid.

Now, I will say for those conspiracy theorists… This smells like trading both is on the horizon.

Candid about what? He was more obscure in those quotes than Omar ever was, though he was far more coherent and articulate. He’ll do whatever the hell he wants to do, and we can sit here all day analyzing all his quotes to no end. Basically, all those crazies in NYC want to hear stuff constantly, but you can’t actually say anything of relevance or you risk blowing away any leverage you have, so he talks in vague statements. Makes sense to me.

      Trade them both, man!

I’d prefer a “negotiations are on going, we continue to hope for a resolution. Can’t comment much further on the situation.”

I think the it’s the use of the media that is starting to wear on me.

He’s a little too completely full of the sh*t that is written on the scripts prepared for him by Fred and Bud.

Sorry, the cat’s out of the bag of bullsh*t now.

      “We’re buyers!”

Yes, we fans have been buyers of outright lies for far too long.

Not sure how this is news. I think most astute Met fans realize that if they can’t nail down these contract extensions by the Winter meeting, the FO efforts are going to turn towards trading them.

With little to no payroll flexibility and not much ready on the farm except pitching, they’ve got to know where they stand with Wright and Dickey sooner rather than later.

I had a different take on these statements when I read them this morning. Most of the times these type statements are geared toward the player & their agent, provided there’s a deal on the table. In this case I see it more of a ploy towards tweaking ownership as in, “well do you want to make an offer or don’t you family Wilpon?” Using the media essentially to tweak ownership much like his statements in the spring about hoping to be able to afford the gas to get down to spring training. Sandy’s done this a few times and this I think is one of those occassions trying to get some fan base swirlage to get some heat under management to give him some direction to either sign’em or trade’em so he knows going into the Winter Meetings. This can give him a path towards what he needs to establish for the overall 2013 team budget since Fred & Jeff are probably dodging and swirling around what to spend/cut.

The local sports pages give space to the Yankees, Jets, Giants, Knicks and Nets with little or no mention of the Mets plight. I just view it as an attempt to get the Mets into the news cycle. Irrelevant and being ignored is worse than despicable.
