According To Sources: The Wright & Dickey Off Season Chronicles 11/19/2012

Today’s “According To Sources” is brought to you courtesy of Andy Martino of the NY Daily News. Martino reports that according to one high-ranking major league executive he came away thinking that the Mets “would want a monster package for (R.A.) Dickey, and if they don’t get it, probably would not trade him.” after recently speaking with Mets officials. He loosely defined the “monster package” as a few high-end prospects or major leaguers.

According To Sources History

  • 10/6/2012 – it’s conceivable Wright and Dickey will have new deals in place, at least in principle, by the time the World Series begins later this month.
  • 10/9/2012 – The Mets are expected to open negotiations with an offer for somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million for star third baseman David Wright.
  • 10/10/2012 – David Wright’s camp intends to milk talks and draw things out until at least after the World Series, in hopes of reaching a better compromise at the last minute.
  • 10/13/2012 – Mets could schedule a meeting and begin formal contract negotiations next week & it’s too early to tell if it’s still possible for either player to be signed this month.
  • 10/25/2012 – Contract negotiations between the Mets and Wright & Dickey remain very preliminary and have not advanced to the point of talking years or dollars and they are still talking about when to really get talking.
  • 11/6/2012 – The Mets are “not close” to a resolution with either Wright or Dickey.
  • 11/7/2012 – Discussions regarding Dickey’s contract extension could see “a resolution before the month ends”.
  • 11/8/2012 – Mets are not expressing the same optimism with R.A. Dickey in regards to “progressing, albeit slowly, in completing a long-term extension”.
  • 11/8/2012 – Mets are “showing little interest in signing Dickey to extension” and are “discussing him in trades”.
  • 11/9/2012 – Speculation that Dickey wanted a Oliver Perez type deal is “completely incorrect” and that a decision to sign or trade Dickey after the NL Cy Young winner is announced could be resolved pretty quickly”.
  • 11/13/2012 – Mets made Wright an offer and Wright’s people have made a counter offer.
  • 11/17/2012 – Mets plan to offer Dickey a two-year contract extension & if Dickey agrees to a 2 year extension he wants more than $10 million a year.
  • 11/19/2012 – Mets “would want a monster package for (R.A.) Dickey, and if they don’t get it, probably would not trade him.”

Monster Package. Dickey. Size does matter.

    1. TRS86

Heeeee, I was already laughing earlier when Kingman proposed trading for Johnson as well.

      1. TX

Dickey, Johnson, Wang, with Putz as the closer…

      2. kingman 26

Dickey and Johnson would indeed be a monster package at the head of the rotation.

We would need the Big Unit or Dick Pole as the new pitching coach.

This thread is what happens when you kids have off for Thanksgiving. Bah humbug.

          2. wanny

Wait, the Mets want a big package for Dickey?

          3. gategem

Here’s one more item to consider if you’re expressing a feeling of relief at the prospect of Dickey being resigned. Fred Wilpon has just retained the family mohel as a consultant to the ballclub.

It’s painfully clear that the Met’s have never heard the term “correctly managing expectations.”

How many times has this organization been burned by putting a timeframe on ANYTHING? Why continue?

    1. TRS86

I agree, this idea that a FO actually owes the truth or an explanation to the fans needs to be banned. They need to do what they think is best, that’s what they are getting paid for. Not to pander.

      1. HobokenMetsFan

Exactly. Just makes me think of words like “Wilpons” and “reactionary” and “overly sensitive to public perception,” in addition to getting the feeling that even though its a new regime in the FO, things really haven’t changed much.

I don’t doubt that I may be making a mountain out of a mole hill here, but with everything that’s happened over the past few years, how could you blame any of us for thinking that way?

  3. Mr North Jersey

I would of sworn that the idea most fans believed was if the Mets felt they were not going to be able to resign R.A. that they in turn would seek to trade him before the season started.

What I keep finding my self at a loss to understand is why some of the reactions I am reading to the “idea” of wanting a lot in return for doing so?

Is it not always the case in any negotiation to try and get as much as you can while the other side tries to give up as least as they can and if you reach an agreement it is usually somewhere in the middle?

I know if it ever came out that a source said the Mets were not asking for much for R.A. that would definitely be at least to me more deserving of some of the reactions I’ve seen today.

“What I keep finding my self at a loss to understand is why some of the reactions I am reading to the “idea” of wanting a lot in return for doing so?”

I think it has to more to do with the fact that we are all expecting the worst to happen, and regardless of what an actual return would/could be, not many of us feel the Met’s (as an organization) are competent enough to see the “Dickey situation” correctly to the end. — At least this is how I feel! hah

      1. Mr North Jersey

I believe your explanation is most likely pretty close to it. Though I still contend that in this case at least I much rather here the Mets are asking for a lot rather than not much.

        1. srt

          This.

Those that are complaining about asking for ‘a monster deal’ are just bored and/or complaining to complain.

For some, doesn’t matter what the FO does, it will be wrong and they won’t hesitate to tell us all why it’s wrong.

    2. TRS86

You can’t really rationalize with the irrational.

      1. Stick

though you do seem to like to keep trying at times, right chief?

        1. TRS86

          Yup.

        2. kingman 26

HAHAHA! I was thinking the SAME thing, but figured I better keep my big ol’ mouth shut.

        3. SaltyGary

          ^^ This!

      2. gategem

Is this the philosophy you employ as both a teacher and coach? ;-)

        1. Stickguy

I never taught, but having coached, I would say it most applies to parents.

        2. Trs86

Actually yeah so I just say … This is the way it’s going to be. Not much room for debate.

So I was going to take another shot at embedding a tweet for a post, but I realized the code to embed is blocked at work. So, whatever.

Opening day ticket prices. $63 is the cheapest seat in the house.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Actually Prismo we have a plugin that was installed a while back where if you simply add the url you just did above into the post it will show up as an embedded pic as well. So feel free to try it out. If it doesn’t display right I can always come in to try and correct it.

      1. Prismo

        “We’re Sorry

An Embedly Key is required. You can sign up for a key here.

If you already have an Embedly Key, please add it to the Embedly Plugin Settings.”

        1. Mr North Jersey

Go ahead and write your post and just leave a “insert twitter url here” where you want the above url to go and I will add it cause I tested it before I told you and the preview went through with no issues so it should work.

Just don’t publish your post and let me know when it is ready and I will publish it myself.

          1. Prismo

It’s okay, I’m not going to make a post. Only would have if I could’ve figured out the tweet embedding. Thanks.

    2. Mr North Jersey

I am going to send you a bunch of past announcements to the email you asked to use cause it seems you have been out of the loop on many announcements.

      Nope.

Phew, good cause I just couldn’t get enough of this.

Jeez they do Halloween to, I am so glad I don’t live near them. I’ve always liked this one:

something else just occured to me, in regards to Wright.

recently, what is one of the things many people point to as being part of his slide? Trying to carry the team/do too much/be the savior/just care too damned much.

well, can you imagine what that will be like after they empty the vault, and pointedly say you are the man, you are getting paid to carry us, the fans are primed to Bay all over you, now go out and earn this contract? With no more help of course!

It could be like ’61 with Maris. Wright may look like my Lab with the hair cascading off of him. He could be totally bald and down to 160 pounds by the ASG!

    1. srt

Well, he’ll have Ike and Duda hitting the long ball behind him, for starters.

      What? Too optimistic?

      1. Stick

didn’t help this year, but sure, let’s go with that!

    OT:

Watching the WBC qualifier game between Brazil and Panama on MLB right now. Didn’t even know they were showing those. Didn’t realize Tejada is currently playing SS in that game right now either. He’s got 5 hits and 3 doubles right now. Nice…..

So who from the Mets, if anyone – might be headed to the WBC games in March?
I know if I had my vote it would be no one.

Listening to the talking heads at MLB earlier and they’d love to see a rotation of Verlander, Strasburg, Price, Hamels (and I forget who the 5th one was). Then they said something like the more established older stars usually don’t want to go. Next statement was Dickey might be a nice addition?

Nice addition? Bah….like he’s some consolation prize.
I hope he stays in Mets ST camp and doesn’t head there.

    1. Stick

WBC again? I hated that last time. Really screwed up some players, and I know there was someone(s) on the Mets.

but they should refuse to let any pitchers go.

      1. srt

Yup. There was the ‘no one could get a hold of Ollie to make sure he was sticking to his ST routine.’

There was the JJ Putz pitching that year after just having come to the Mets for that season with a bad elbow. Who’s bright idea was that?

I watched Wright foul a ball off his foot and I believe he either came out of that game or was close to being lifted.

  8. srt

‘Wright ‘50-50’ to sign Mets extension’
(Way to go out on a limb there, Puma.)

    http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/mets/you_half_to_believe_eIKwTe6jo8VL6v5hRQSJQL?utm_medium=rss&utm_content=Mets

‘But the two sides remain at a stalemate.’

“Part of it is [COO] Jeff Wilpon tries to win every negotiation, he doesn’t go for the middle ground,” said a person familiar with the club’s negotiating tactics.
    *****************************************

I’ve said it before….if the Wilpons hold onto this team, god help us the day it’s just Jeff at the helm.

    1. TRS86

Well to be fair, why shouldn’t he try to win every negotiation? Especially considering the mess they are in. My hopes are that if that is the case that they have identified exactly what they believe Wright is worth, offered him that and moved on. Which is most likely why Jose isn’t a Met either.

      1. Stick

that does seem to be Sandy’s SOP. And it makes sense.

Good way to buy a car too. make your offer, ask for a yes/no, and if no move on.

    2. Stick

The problem I have with this is that it means Jeff is actually in the negotiations.

I understand of course ownership having to sign off on the mega deals, and supply parameters, but they should then stay the hell out of the process (unless the Gm wants to bring them in for some specific reason).

Maybe I am taking this too far, and it just means the parameters he set are the problem, but somehow I doubt it.

Good news, I bet they lose the team before Jeffy gets full control. and if not, it should not take long after that!

Remember, there are lots of cases of the next generation inheriting dads “baby”, and they quickly sell off since they want the money a lot more than the business!

      1. srt

        Your last comment is interesting.

I’ve been thinking the same thing about the Yankees.
Read where they sold off 49% of the YES station.
Also read where they no longer want to pay luxury tax and want to get the payroll down under $189 MIL.

I can only assume gone are the days where George would pay any amount of money to win at any and all costs. Starting to sound like the sons aren’t as obsessed and are treating it like a business that should be paying for itself.

        1. Stick

I kind of got that impression too. If it is not your passion, and you have other interests to pursue, hard to resist cashing out a huge amount of money and moving on. either that, or just turning it over to professionals to manage and cashing the dividend checks!

Jeffy could be interesting, if he is one of the few that thinks he is a genius that just needed full control, and he is going to try to be the next Boss George. Odds are that will not end well for him!
