Mike Pelfrey tells ESPN New York that he has been non tendered and expects to pitch elsewhere next season. Pelfrey says, “If the Mets have five starters, I guess I’ll end up pitching somewhere else.” Pelfrey says he prefers to start and he thanks the organization for giving him the opportunity.

Well, thanks for the memories Big Pelf.
“Coming off surgery, the biggest thing for me is I need to pitch. Coming into camp as the extra guy is not something I would want to do. … I didn’t work that hard to be an extra guy. I want to take the ball every fifth day. Obviously, numbers-wise, if they have five starters, I wouldn’t come back. … If the Mets have five starters, I guess I’ll end up pitching somewhere else.”
Classy statement and smart enough not to burn any bridges:
“I want to thank the organization for giving me the opportunity,” Pelfrey said. “It was my first opportunity. They stuck by me through some good times. They stuck by me through some bad times. I appreciate everything they’ve done for me. I wish them nothing but the best in the future. I don’t know what’s going to happen with my future, but whatever transpires, as long as I’m not playing against them, I’ll be rooting for them and I wish them the best of luck.”

Nice to see athletes take the high road. It does not pain me to see him go, he always drove me nuts and I just never trusted him with anything on the line. If I was him I would rather pitch somewhere else and jest get a change of scenery. Unfortunately as a Mets rookie, you get some pretty unfair expectations no matter what your talent level is.

To me, that sounds like he kicked the kerosene can over while lighting up a cigarette. Nice knowing you Pelf.

I can physically see Boras’ arm up Pelf’s back end, moving his lips like a puppet.

Just read a article that our favorite fantasy player Choo is available for trade on his walk year but he is a Boras guy. I would love to see Choo in RF.

I think he’d be worth a fly, absolutely. You have to deal with the devil boras at some point. And at the worst, you get a pick if he plays up to his potential and subsequently walks. Send them Flores and something else.

I would be way down for that. If you trade for him and he works out, it’s worth paying the devil. Getting a one year trial is worth it for a NY team.

Now that I think on it, it would probably be better if they offered an incentive laden deal to Sizemore. Like a 5 million base that can get up to 13 million or something like that. I’d rather they spend the cash vs. prospects on a rental.

I would be fine with that but 5m seems steep on sizemore at this point.

If you can get him for less, why the hell not? I really think they need to take a flyer on a high risk/reward type and try to trade for another consistent OF. Duda should not be chiseled in stone to be the RF. And I will not be happy if there is a 5 man rotation of Kirk / Duda / Familia / Baxter / another schlep type.

I forgot about Sizemore, the situation would be perfect. He wants to reestablish himself on a team that can give him playing time, and the Mets want to find a diamond in the rough.

in this case, I think “why not” is there is a good chance he may not be physically able to play this year.
and I am not interested in trading decent pieces for a 1 year rental that is not really that good (just in relation to the current crap on hand)

I just looked up and found a article saying his agent will be at the winter meetings and it sounds like he will be ready to go. He was supposed to play this season but had some setbacks. Bad back and bad knees aren’t a good thing, but if you can get him cheaply, then why not.

Stick, obviously if he fails the physical, he fails to be allowed on the team, but for his skill, I think he’s worth the risk. Not knowing what it would take to get him, but if you could get him for a low low amount. 1 mil? 2 mil? and then have crazy incentives (up to 10 million?), i can certainly see him biting on that to come to NY. It’s really the only way i see him signing with any team, because i don’t see him not getting the low salary/incentive laden deal.
And yeah, maybe i’m making it way to high for the attainable incentives, but someone smarter than me would work that out. I’m just here for the mai tais.

Martin signed with the Bucs. I can’t remember the last time to threw out a FA contract like that. Good for them.

does he honestly think some team is going to sign him now, to guarantee him a rotation spot?
how about a MiL deal, and earn yourself a spot on merit?

I completely agree. What is he thinking? He’ll be only about 10 months removed from TJ and he thinks a team is going to give him a guaranteed 7-figure contract and guarantee him the ball every 5 days. It’s a little crazy. Even if the Mets had 3 starters right now, they would not have tendered Pelfrey, considering what he’s making already, he must have known that.

I read a few days ago quotes from Pelf saying he’d be ready to go by Feb. I think he’s being a tad optimistic with that one.
Read a debate on AA tonight where someone thinks it would be a better idea to re-sign Pelf and trade Gee – and not b/c Gee is the better trade candidate either. He thought he was the better pitcher.
Pelf might have better stuff but in my humble opinion he’s light years away from having what it takes to pitch in – or maybe pitch in NY. Gee’s one of those type pitchers who knows he’s never going to be the ace, but his demeanor on the mound, along with making the best of what talents he does have when he’s pitching out there, makes him the better pitcher.

I would rather have Gee. Overall better, and much more reliable. And for the next few years, way cheaper.

I can easily see a team throwing a 1-2 meal deal in higher incentive laden contract his way. Hell the bucs just signed MArtin why not get a Pelf as some insurance to their decent rotation.

If I had the time and the energy what I was thinking of looking into was the following comparison in charting a course for Big Doof: What is the comparison between Pelfrey and a young Dickey at the point at which Dickey’s arm crapped out and he reinvented himself?
Yes, I was thinking could Pelfrey evolve into Dickey 2.0. The idea being the Met’s sign him to a minor league deal and let him learn to craft the knuckler at the side of the latest knucklemeister RA. Then by the time RA’s winding down, slot Pelf the knuckler into the rotation in 3 years. I know, completely insane but not knowing the extent of Pelf’s damage I thought this might be his only path at some point otherwise he goes the way of John Maine if his damage is too bad.

I think where that falls apart is that a huge aspect to Dickey’s success is the mental aspect of perfecting his craft, and controlling a game. I have a lot of trouble imagining Poof doing either one.

lol, that is an excellent point I had not thought of, mental toughness does indeed not seem to be part of the Poof DNA. I always figured he’d end up in KC eventually anyway since he’s from Witchita.

Agree totally.
Read RA’s book. Was even more impressed with his determination to reinvent himself as a knuckleball pitcher. The constant doubt that it would ever pan out just fueled him to seek out advice from other knuckleball pitchers and work even harder to master the pitch.
Somehow, I can’t see Pelf having the same intestinal fortitude Dickey had and go through what he did to get him where he is today.

Pelfrey is a thimble, to Dickey’s punchbowl of wisdom and mental capacity. Had Pelf reinvented himself into a knuckleball pitcher, the first ball Thole (or some other scrub catcher) let go by, I fear a black hole of self-doubt would engulf the stadium.
Pelf, you may be a good person, but I’m kinda happy your pitching days with the Mets seem to be over.
I heart the Poof. :..-(

Totally agree. Over the years many have flirted with the pitch but so few have mastered it.

lol, I think of the knuckleball in baseball being the equivalent of prayer being the last refuge for scoundrels, or, shot starters.
Who’d of thought a power arm like Dickey was drafted as becoming a knuckler? You never know? But yeah I doubt it for Pelf. If I were him I’d think about though given it’s going to be a long road back and he’s got the knuckler blood line connection to RA already established. Heck, Pelf could find a next dimension to the pitch by falling of the mound every time he throws it.
