Dickey’s Agent Says Dollars Not Years Are The Issue In Extension Talks

Bo McKinnis, who represents R.A. Dickey, tells ESPN New York that the stumbling block in the negotiations is the dollars and not the years. McKinnis says:

“As we’ve spoken of number of years, I think we’re both in a general area,” McKinnis said. “We’ve talked about various proposals and different structures and there’s multiple that I think we both could be happy with. That’s definitely not the issue. It would definitely go back to the actual dollars.”

McKinnis said talks with the Mets have been cordial.

the guy is 38. I hope years is not the hold up!

and it probably is not $ either. Just whether he is getting traded.

I agree. Alderson’s just buying time, waiting for someone to blink or for a Greinke development to shake everyone loose. I believe an extension for Dickey is the fallback…and it’s pretty much a lock.

not like he has anywhere else to go next year.

I saw Metsblog reports that Bowden said on Sirius that Dickey is seeking 3 years $45M. This though if true would go against earlier rumors that he is not seeking Ollie P type money.

Given the current market for pitchers, can you blame him?

      1. Mr North Jersey

        Nope.

Of course you can’t blame him for that. He deserves to get paid, but it would be silly of the Mets to sign onto that contract, and he’d be better off getting that money from a real contender.

depends on how much of a risk he wants to take pitching out next year to FA.

I was under the impression that he was good with 2 years are reasonable (but not small) $ to basically lock in the retirement plan. just in case the wheels come off the bus next year!

and 2 year extension = 3 total, right?

I still think he is traded, and if not, it will be 2013 + 2/26 added on so 3/31 total.

Let’s say Dickey pitches to an ERA of 3.15 this coming season, and goes 17-8. He comes in 8th in the NL Cy Young voting.

What contract do you think he would get in the open market?

      1. Stick

2 year deal most likely. 2/30?

but, say he has a major injury (3rd year in a row) that actually takes him out of action, and he makes 16 starts with a 4.00 era. than what does he get?

  3. Ninemoreouts

I’m no mathematician, but if he’s already getting $5 mil for the first year, then this is effectively like throwing $20 mil for each of the 2nd and 3rd years.

    That’s not going to happen.

    1. Prismo

I think he wants a 3 year, $45million extension beyond this coming season.

  4. Mr North Jersey

    @MartinoNYDN
Dickey not seeking 3/45. Not even close. We’ve reported for weeks 2 yr extension he wants is less than Peavy’s 2/29, on top of 5 mil option

so pretty much just like the 2/26 extension I just speculated on above!

IMO, a great deal for the club if they don’t end up trading him. Talk about being in the driver’s seat for the team.

    2. srt

If this is true, he’s more than worth 13 mil for 2 years.

So it’s got to be the FO just waiting to see what kind of offers their going to get for Dickey.

one report says mets are considering mark reynolds as an outfielder. are the mets trying not to catch the ball out there with guys like reynolds and duda?

    1. Stick

That one is out there even for the Mets. I really, truly hope they are making a concious effort now to improve the defense after last season (the pen was not good overall, but they got slaughtered by the D a bunch of times, especially parnell).

      1. greggofboken

The Astros have let it be known that they’re shopping for a DH/1B. I don’t think they’ve got anyone who could replace his offense in the short-term, but it’d be great to shop Duda to them.

    2. srt

Man, we’re going to have one ugly defensive OF next season, aren’t we?

What’s the drink of choice in Nashville? Has anyone confirmed if Ken Davidoff is tweeting from the bar?
