This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty The “Here’s Another Blast From The Past” Edition 12-09-12

Since there really is no Mets news to either report or comment on, I figure that I would take you back in time and relive some of the more important moments of the Keith Hernandez/Gary Carter halcyon days of the mid to late ’80′s.

click here to view and ENJOY !!

And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:

Outfielder from ’75-’76, Del Unser is 68 (1944).

Middle reliever from the ’74 and ’75 seasons, Jerry Cram is 65 (1947).

Starting pitcher from the ’77 season, Doc Medich is 64 (1948).

Outfielder from ’74-’79, Bruce Boisclair is 60(1952) .

Center Fielder from the ’89 season, Juan Samuel is 52 (1960) The Mets acquisition of Samuel still ranks up there as one of the worst trades in Mets history.

Middle reliever from the ’96 season, Mike Fyhrie is 43 (1969).

“Mr Ganja” himself, outfielder, Tony Tarasco is 42 (1970) .

Reserve outfielder from the ’03-’04 seasons, Jeff Duncan is 34 (1978).

Reserve outfielder from this past season, Fred Lewis is 32 (1980).

The New York Mets released first baseman Donn Clendenon on December 9, 1971.

The New York Mets traded reserve outfielder, Leon Brown and reserve first baseman, Brock Pemberton to the St. Louis Cardinals for minor league first baseman, Ed Kurpiel on December 9, 1976.

The New York Mets traded third baseman, Roy Staiger to the New York Yankees for reserve outfielder, Sergio Ferrer on December 9, 1977.

The New York Mets traded middle reliever, Blaine Beatty to the Montreal Expos for reserve outfielder, Jeff Barry on December 9, 1991.

The Montreal Expos drafted relief pitcher, Guillermo Mota from the Mets on December 9, 1996. Mota is still considered a four letter word around these parts today !

The Colorado Rockies signed pitcher, Mike Hampton of the New York Mets as a free agent on December 9, 2000. I originally was very upset and angry that the Mets didn’t retain Hampton, but when I found out that the Mets selected David Wright as the draft compensation pick from the Rockies my anger receded.

The New York Mets signed free agent reserve infielder/pinch hitting specialist, Julio Franco of the Atlanta Braves on December 9, 2005. Yes this is the 7 year anniversary of “Father Time” becoming a Met !

The Mets selected second baseman, Brad Emaus from the Toronto Blue Jays in the Rule 5 draft on December 9, 2010. Eamus faltered in his first weeks with the Mets , and was ultimately sent back to the Blue Jays.

Later in that draft the Mets selected reliever, Pedro Beato from the Baltimore Orioles on December 9, 2010. Pedro showed glimpses of dominance, but he proved to be too erratic and was traded last August to the Red Sox for catcher, Kelly Shoppach.

It is rumored that Mo Vaughn will open the first Fat Burger restaurant in New York City – the problem is that it will not be opened to the public – just to Mo !
