As we follow the continuing off-season action (from some teams anyway) the speculation on the 2013 home of NL Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey has become the prime topic in Met Nation.
To Texas for Olt? Profar? Andrus? Am I dreaming?
To Toronto for d’Arnaud?
To the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim who play in Anaheim and were once the California Angels but were originally called the Los Angeles Angels for Trumbo and Conger?
To Queens for a nice new 2-year extension with a possible option for a 3rd year?
What do YOU think?
Let us know!

I’d like D’Arnaud.
Would Dickey + Flores net you Andrus/Profur + a relief pitcher?
Odds though, is that Dickey just re-ups. I really hope not, though, as the offense is going to be dreadful sans Wright and Ike.

Part of the reason is b/c I suck at trade proposals. I’d have to do some research on some of these players you mentioned.

As a baseball GM, which I’m not, I would never give up solid pitching for any prospect. Even Will Myers, who is still only a prospect. (think monster AAA bat Butch Huskey). Besides, power doesn’t really seem to cut it at Citi. Need speed and D and gap hitting. My opinion.
Olt, forget about – as someone said here, might have been you Kong, he’d be another converted infielder/outfielder that makes pitchers see red and lose focus.
As George Wallace would have said, “quit yaw pussy-footin’ around” and sign Dickey. Madness to trade him. Dangle him, sure, but sign the guy. You can still trade him if something too good to be true comes along and it that circumstance doesn’t have to be now.
I think Alderson is taking his time with too many things at once. Sign him now, take you time with the trade possibilities

That was me on Olt; all we need is another IF playing the OF.
I would trade Dickey for one of the very best prospects in the game, and nothing less.
But I have always favored re-signing him.
Nice referencing Wallace!
As for Alderson, I think he may be taking his time with too few things.

what depresses me is if they do re-sign Dickey, the offense will get no help. They will be lucky to be as good as last year, and that was not very good!

Re-signing Dickey, to me, represents the thought that 1973 can be repeated: rely on a strong rotation and a really weak field to back our way into the playoffs.

The 1969 team didn’t ‘back into the playoffs against a weak field’ like I’m referring to. They won 100 games. The 2013 team’s only real shot is repeating the 1973 “play at .500 and have every other team suck really bad” event… which really ain’t happening.

12/10/2012-2:04pm at 2:04 pm (UTC -4)
I meant getting into the playoffs with pitching as our strength, far and away more than the offense that year.
Plus, in ’69 and ’73 and ’86 there was less opportunity than today with the WC format being the way it is now.
Still kind of early yet but so far on paper, the Nats seem to be the best overall team in the NL east and the Braves looking better than the Mets, Miami and probably even the Phils.

Based on the rest of the division and the rest of the roster, for this miracle 2013 run to occur, Harvey and Wheeler would need to become Seaver and Koosman for the most of the year.

Were Alderson not to trade Dickey, nor to trade Niese/Flores or any other person of value to do something about the dearth of position players in this organization is just about as close to malfeasance as I can think of.
I don’t see how we get from 74 wins to 82 (especially given the windfalls we got with both Dickey’s and Wright’s seasons which should not reasonably be expected to anniversary themselves) with virtually the same cast or their similiarly less-than-valuable replacements.

I am torn. And I am lousy at valuing prospects. But I also can’t decide if they would be better off trying for 1 high end guy, or say 3 good to very good ones to fill more holes.
So, Profur or bust! I kind of agree with Knog about Olt. Since he can’t play 3rd, unless they want to move Ike, I need to see a better report on how good he will be in the OF.
As a rule, they need to upgrade the D, especially playing in Citi.
so just extend Dickey for the 2 years, and get it over with. Since I don’t think the FO has the ability to pull of anything really creative.
but please, if they do re-up Dickey and bet on the rotation to keep them afloat, get a damned bat with some of this money they keep freeing up.
and yes, I mean Pyrzinskiiii. RH bat with some power, stabilize the C spot, and if it means it stirs up the clubhouse, fan freaking tastic. This teams needs some balls (er, attitude!) anyway.
So, since I don’t trust this bunch to make a trade, Sign Dickey for another what, 2/28? Then sign AJP for 2/? (2/16? less?). And find a RH OF FA like Hairston or similar, dredge up a couple more live arms to fight for pen jobs, and hit the mai tais.

If you want to spark up the clubhouse, a worthwhile endeavor, then why not consider Swisher? I guess his price is will drop along with all the other guys who haven’t signed yet.
And then a lower level deal for one of the ‘extra’ catchers – Salty, etc?

Watching MLB tonight I was surprised by just how much the Dodger payroll is right now.
They also explained the new rules with the luxury tax. I thought I understood it but realized I was a little off after listening to their explanation.
Had comments from their GM Colletti(sp?) on being cognizant of the luxury cap but are not going to let that stop that from signing a player if they think it’s the right fit.
If their payroll stands at about $220 MIL, they’ll only wind up paying an extra 3-4 MIL for the luxury tax for 2013. It’s 2014 they really need to be careful of.
So pissed that Selig stepped in to ‘help’ the Wilpons retain the Mets. Seeing what the new Dodgers ownership are doing has me jealous. Of course their new TV deal is a big part of the reason they’re not worrying about money right now.
