Monday December 10 Open Thread: Dickey For Who?

As we follow the continuing off-season action (from some teams anyway) the speculation on the 2013 home of NL Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey has become the prime topic in Met Nation.

To Texas for Olt? Profar? Andrus? Am I dreaming?

To Toronto for d’Arnaud?

To the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim who play in Anaheim and were once the California Angels but were originally called the Los Angeles Angels for Trumbo and Conger?

To Queens for a nice new 2-year extension with a possible option for a 3rd year?

What do YOU think?

Let us know!

      And dolphins are aggressive swimmers.

      1. kingman 26

They have not been for the last six weeks.

        Except against the Seahawks!

  2. TX

    I’d like D’Arnaud.

Would Dickey + Flores net you Andrus/Profur + a relief pitcher?

Odds though, is that Dickey just re-ups. I really hope not, though, as the offense is going to be dreadful sans Wright and Ike.

  3. Stick

    I think beer is good.

Thanks Knog for a blank slate.

      Beer is the best!

    I’m going with door #4:

To Queens for a nice new 2-year extension with a possible option for a 3rd year?

Part of the reason is b/c I suck at trade proposals. I’d have to do some research on some of these players you mentioned.

  5. boldib

As a baseball GM, which I’m not, I would never give up solid pitching for any prospect. Even Will Myers, who is still only a prospect. (think monster AAA bat Butch Huskey). Besides, power doesn’t really seem to cut it at Citi. Need speed and D and gap hitting. My opinion.

Olt, forget about – as someone said here, might have been you Kong, he’d be another converted infielder/outfielder that makes pitchers see red and lose focus.

As George Wallace would have said, “quit yaw pussy-footin’ around” and sign Dickey. Madness to trade him. Dangle him, sure, but sign the guy. You can still trade him if something too good to be true comes along and it that circumstance doesn’t have to be now.

I think Alderson is taking his time with too many things at once. Sign him now, take you time with the trade possibilities

    1. kingman 26

That was me on Olt; all we need is another IF playing the OF.

I would trade Dickey for one of the very best prospects in the game, and nothing less.

But I have always favored re-signing him.

      Nice referencing Wallace!

As for Alderson, I think he may be taking his time with too few things.

      1. boldib

“As for Alderson, I think he may be taking his time with too few things”

Interesting. But, since he’s done practically nothing other than view the landscape I wonder what it is he’s
rushed into. The D Wright contract?

        1. Stick

interesting. I interpreted that to mean his is not working on enough things (not that he did not take enough time on the little he has done!)

          1. boldib

            Aaahh. Yeah.

    2. Stick

what depresses me is if they do re-sign Dickey, the offense will get no help. They will be lucky to be as good as last year, and that was not very good!

      1. darknova306

Re-signing Dickey, to me, represents the thought that 1973 can be repeated: rely on a strong rotation and a really weak field to back our way into the playoffs.

        1. srt

Wouldn’t be the first time we’ve done that. Re: 1969.

          1. darknova306

The 1969 team didn’t ‘back into the playoffs against a weak field’ like I’m referring to. They won 100 games. The 2013 team’s only real shot is repeating the 1973 “play at .500 and have every other team suck really bad” event… which really ain’t happening.

          2. Stick

not quite as bad now, since there is also the 2nd WC back in option!

          3. srt

I meant getting into the playoffs with pitching as our strength, far and away more than the offense that year.

Plus, in ’69 and ’73 and ’86 there was less opportunity than today with the WC format being the way it is now.

Still kind of early yet but so far on paper, the Nats seem to be the best overall team in the NL east and the Braves looking better than the Mets, Miami and probably even the Phils.

          4. darknova306

Based on the rest of the division and the rest of the roster, for this miracle 2013 run to occur, Harvey and Wheeler would need to become Seaver and Koosman for the most of the year.

        2. Stick

well, if everything breaks right, they could repeat 1973.

82 wins is certainly within reach!

Just don’t expect that pesky WS appearance to go along with it.

        3. greggofboken

Were Alderson not to trade Dickey, nor to trade Niese/Flores or any other person of value to do something about the dearth of position players in this organization is just about as close to malfeasance as I can think of.

I don’t see how we get from 74 wins to 82 (especially given the windfalls we got with both Dickey’s and Wright’s seasons which should not reasonably be expected to anniversary themselves) with virtually the same cast or their similiarly less-than-valuable replacements.

  6. Stick

I am torn. And I am lousy at valuing prospects. But I also can’t decide if they would be better off trying for 1 high end guy, or say 3 good to very good ones to fill more holes.

So, Profur or bust! I kind of agree with Knog about Olt. Since he can’t play 3rd, unless they want to move Ike, I need to see a better report on how good he will be in the OF.

As a rule, they need to upgrade the D, especially playing in Citi.

so just extend Dickey for the 2 years, and get it over with. Since I don’t think the FO has the ability to pull of anything really creative.

but please, if they do re-up Dickey and bet on the rotation to keep them afloat, get a damned bat with some of this money they keep freeing up.

and yes, I mean Pyrzinskiiii. RH bat with some power, stabilize the C spot, and if it means it stirs up the clubhouse, fan freaking tastic. This teams needs some balls (er, attitude!) anyway.

So, since I don’t trust this bunch to make a trade, Sign Dickey for another what, 2/28? Then sign AJP for 2/? (2/16? less?). And find a RH OF FA like Hairston or similar, dredge up a couple more live arms to fight for pen jobs, and hit the mai tais.

    1. Q-Rod

If you want to spark up the clubhouse, a worthwhile endeavor, then why not consider Swisher? I guess his price is will drop along with all the other guys who haven’t signed yet.

And then a lower level deal for one of the ‘extra’ catchers – Salty, etc?

      1. Stick

I don’t think I could take him. Plus he is holding out for way too much money.

would rather invest a smaller $ amount in a catcher.

  7. Stick

oh, forgot 1 point. If the FO actually was trying to get some position players in, after they signed Dickey they would troll Neise out there since he should get a solid return. Not happening most likely, but could be out there.

    1. srt

Something has to give b/c just a preliminary look at the 2014 FA class is not inspiring….

    2. TX

Maybe he’s lining all this up to have his 2nd “really good day”, much like last year. Trade Dickey, Sign Lannan and AJP, all in one swoop.

      1. Stick

I am fine with that as long as the return for Dickey looks good.

        1. TX

And that’s really it, in a nutshell. Dickey for Profur. Win. Dickey for Hart on Milwaukee, major loss.

          1. Stick

give that man a chicken dinner.

Hey, any progress on the next little Met fan? hope that does not drag on much longer. Your wife must not be a happy camper at this point.

          2. TX

not yet and She’s torched the camp site at this point. Though, now I’m pulling for a 12/12/12 baby at 12:12 PM. I joked about 12 lbs. 12 oz, and got the death stare. It’s as tense around the household as when K-rod would let up 2 hits and walk to open up the ninth, up by one…

          3. kingman 26

Hey buddy–best of luck with that!

          4. srt

            12 lbs, 12 oz??
As a member of the female race, I think I’d be giving you more than a death stare. LOL

Seriously, hope it’s soon and all goes perfectly according to schedule.

And I give you and her credit. Not sure I’d want to pick up and move halfway across the country when pregnant.
I guess in these economic times though you have to jump when you get the chance to further your career. Hope you’re both enjoying Seattle. I was there once for work and was surprised by how beautiful that area was.

Meanwhile Rubin puts up a note that Dickey’s appearance as an elf at the annual Christmas party is a good indication that he’s not going to be traded.

    (brother)

    1. Stick

tell it to what’s his name with the hot wife. Didn’t keep him from getting shipped out.

      1. TX

Benson. Not the Butler guy. The pitcher. And said hot wife is not his wife any more. Wonder if he cheated, because she threatened to sleep with the entire team if he did that, if memory serves.

          1. greggofboken

            Other Met Santas:

2004 Mike Cameron – next season: collision
            2005: See above
2007: John Maine – next season, initial shoulder injury
            2009: Jeff Francoeur – traded mid-year

This is the Yuletide equivalent of a fish wrapped in newspaper.

          2. SaltyGary

Mother of God it’s almost as bad as the Maddon curse.

          3. Prismo

            2010: David Wright
            2011: Daniel Murphy
            2012: John Franco (yes)

          4. Stick

Sacrifice Franco for the good of the team.

so DW had a lost season in 2011 and broke his back. At least it seems murphy had his injuries prior to being Santa. Only thing he lost was the ability to hit HRs!

          5. greggofboken

2006: Julio Franco – Elf: Traded mid-season. Career over after 15 more games
2008: Frankie Rodriguez – Elf: Loses 1.5 off his ERA and notches the worst season of his career to that point.
2010 Elves: Bay (no explanation needed), Davis (ankle injury) Carlos Beltran (traded mid-season) – $30M worth of elves.

        1. greggofboken

Some say it was the only reason Steve Trachsel kept pitching.

      2. SaltyGary

        HAHAHA Anna Benson!

Did Alex get the boot at MMO again? It is very peaceful there today…

    1. Stick

seemed that Joe was at the end of his rope with him recently. Maybe Alex and Bayonne (banned once again too0 will finaly start a core-only by invitation site so they can piss and moan without any intelligent outside opinions creeping into their misery.

      1. kingman 26

Wow, if Alex finally got the boot too, that site would actually be fit for adults! Keep me posted as I might make an appearance!

      2. srt

I know that Bayonne was banned last week. Saw the comment from Joe D on that. It’s probably temporary though as this is not the first time.

Didn’t see anything about Alex being banned.

  10. TX

Supposedly, Mets trying to get both Olt and Martin from TEX. 1 fail swoop and 2/3 of the OF is taken care of. I doubt it happens, but sign me up for that if it does…

    1. Stick

I would be fine with that. Assuming they are actually any good.

Send them someone else back from the minors.

      Make it happen Sandy.

      1. TX

Olt is number 2 and Martin is number 3 positional prospects in their system. Olt would be made into a corner OF and Martin plays CF.

      2. Prismo

Again, this all depends on whether or nto Olt can actually play an adequate outfield position. If he CAN this trade is EXCELLENT. If he cannot, wtf do we do with him and Flores both on the roster, with no position?

        1. darknova306

Open the door for one of them by trading Kaptain Payday? :)

        2. wanny

flores is not here yet. and if he gets here when ike gets expensive in arbitration…

if olt plays one corner then kirk has to play the other and duda must go…

          1. Stick

hell, like I said before, get the big talent first. worry about how to get them on the field after that.

if you have a better guy blocked, trade the guy blocking him. I am sure you could get a pretty good OF for Ike say if there was someone else ready to step in at 1B.

    2. Prismo

Not sure if “fail swoop” was typo…or joke about Sandy Alderson.

      ಠ_ಠ

      1. TX

        Auto correct or… Just correct.

  11. srt

Watching MLB tonight I was surprised by just how much the Dodger payroll is right now.
They also explained the new rules with the luxury tax. I thought I understood it but realized I was a little off after listening to their explanation.

Had comments from their GM Colletti(sp?) on being cognizant of the luxury cap but are not going to let that stop that from signing a player if they think it’s the right fit.

If their payroll stands at about $220 MIL, they’ll only wind up paying an extra 3-4 MIL for the luxury tax for 2013. It’s 2014 they really need to be careful of.

So pissed that Selig stepped in to ‘help’ the Wilpons retain the Mets. Seeing what the new Dodgers ownership are doing has me jealous. Of course their new TV deal is a big part of the reason they’re not worrying about money right now.

    1. darknova306

I’m jealous of their new ownership’s ability to put money into the team, but that guarantees nothing and what they’re currently doing is completely reckless. It’ll all most likely backfire. Elite Cy Young money for Greinke? Oy. Crawford? Beckett? Etc. It all makes Omar look good…

      1. gategem

Then again they may win the WS.

    2. Hazmet

OK, try this on for size: the number 650. Wrap your head around that and then make it: $650,000,000. That number as per ESPN about 5 mintues ago is the amount of money the Dodgers have committed to FA signings in the past 7 months. All I have to say is HOLY CRAP!!!!

That’s like I think more than every FA signing the Mets have ever made.

      1. Stick

        screw it. Ain’t my money!

      2. gategem

Compare that to the National Debt and it seems like a pittance.

  12. Hazmet

What up? It didn’t take me 5 page down strikes to finish this post. j/k
