With so much flexibility, Sandy has got to get off this stupid 2 year deal and under for anyone not named Niese and Wright.

Kicking the tires on Ross, but won’t go 3 years… Pay him. Pay him now. Get an actual outfielder in the outfield.

You’re wrong, JS is owed $30.5M, not $26M.,

He is getting paid $25M this year, and $5.5M for a buyout NEXT YEAR.

Where you’re getting $26M from is beyond me.

Johan is actually at 25m plus 5.5m buyout.

    1. Mr North Jersey

      Cot’s says for Santana it’s 2013:$25.5M and ($5.5M buyout).

So $31M minus the $5M deferred deferred annually is how I arrived at $26M.

      1. SaltyGary

I got the 25 value from baseball reference. And are you saying Santana has a deferment as well ?!?

      2. SaltyGary

oh sorry 25 is for next year if no buyout sry. but deferment?

        1. Mr North Jersey

          Santana has $5M deferred annually.

          08:$19M,
          09:$20M,
          10:$21M,
          11:$22.5M,
          12:$24M,
          13:$25.5M,
          14:$25M club option ($5.5M buyout)

$5M deferred annually at 1.25% compound interest (payable June 30 seven years after season in which salary was earned), reducing present-day value of package to $123.1M

            ARE YOU FRIGGEN KIDDING ME!

Ok so now we have Wright, Bay, Santana, Saberhagen and Bonilla on deferments. Did I miss anyone else? I need a prescription after today oy ve.

          2. Mr North Jersey

            LoL

          3. srt

Aren’t we still paying Strawberry some defer money as well?

        2. Stick

so the $5mill from his first year actually due in 2013, right? Or it may be counted from after the year, which makes more sense since that would start in 2014. regardless, yes, they are going to end up with enough being paid in deferments to count as a high-end FA salary.

          1. Mr North Jersey

No, the $5M deferred from 2008 is due 7 years later which would be 2015.

          2. Stick

I am having some serious math in my head issues today. Damned old age.

          3. darknova306

Buy now, pay later. Sounds like Congress…

          4. Stick

I am sure that in the past, they were doing it because they were turning a profit (pay 2%interest but get 12% from bernie).

now, I bet they are doing it as a kicking the can down the road deal. basically hoping they can afford it then, and if not, they are losing the team anyway and don’t really care.

  3. SaltyGary

Oh and please, lets not forget Saberhagen at 250k and Bonilla at 1.9m :P

The MEts blog-o-sphere really melted down town. This was just posted at MEts Today where our friend Paul Festa still works for:

    http://www.metstoday.com/8229/12-13-offseason/fourth-place-again-so-why-bother/

Even Cerrone’s last two posts are getting as pointed as he probably can without losing his verizon sponsership. What a crappy day in Mets land.

And really, nothing major warranted it to be. Dickey complained a little, Alderson tempered all our expectations and the masses went frothed themselves up into cardiac arrest. It’s not like the venting is helping, either. It’s more like inciting a riot. And if it’s status quo, the people will leave, it’s a simple as that. Maybe it’s Sandy. Maybe it’s the owners. At this point, they are blending into the same blob of “the man”, and everyone hates the man. I’m sure it would be better for my work productivity and my state of mind if i stopped following the blogs or just the Mets. Uff da.

      1. SaltyGary

It all comes down to Sandy’s interview with Francessa in October and what he was quoted as saying today.

When you have him saying that they need to resign both Wright and Dickey to demonstrate they are ready to reinvest in the team again and that there will be significant changes in C and OF because we know what we have and what we have can’t win, you feel hopeful that they are ready to move forward. Not do anything major this season but they are out of the woods.

Now today Sandy says not only is the roster going to look like the one that ended the season in 12 but the deferred money is most likely going to be pocketed and not used towards the season. I look at it as the straw that broke the camels back.

I just don’t see why anyone in their right mind would spend money to go see them until there are significant changes to the hole operation.

in honor of SRT, don’t shoot the messenger. i don’t think we will ever know the full story on much much Fred and Jeff yanked the rug out from under him. Highly probable that the he has some kind of plan/commitment/$ amount at one point, then a couple of months later they shake up the etch-a-sketch again and change the rules.

For a while I was willing to give them some slack but more and more I am looking for my pitchfork. And it is not just because they got the team so overlevereged that they may never recover, but because of the chronic clown show they run. And Jeffy inserting himself in the process. I can’t stand him.

At this point, even if the new owners said up front that they would not be able to increase payroll over anytime soon the current level, I would not care, just to get new blood, assuming they promised to hire a couple of sharp minds (like in Tampa) and let them do what they needed to, and stayed the hell out of the way.

          1. srt

We really all should be blaming Selig and MLB.
If he didn’t stick his nose in this to help out his buddy Fred, WE might be the team that has the new ownership the Dodgers team is now enjoying.

Bottom line is Fred wants to hold onto the team, he won’t put his hands in his own pocket to invest in them – therefore he’s going to operating it like we’re some smaller market team until it starts paying for itself.

Wilpons should have sold the Mets and bought the friggin’ Dodgers. They’d be happy, the Mets would be happy and Met fans everywhere would be rejoicing.

          2. srt

And let me add if not for Wilpons having invested most of the Mets operating money in Madoff, SA would never even be the GM of the NY Mets.

      2. kingman 26

Youkilis gets 1/12 and we offer RA 2/20?

        Major justification for anger.

        1. TX

Agreed. He should demand 3 years too.

  5. Matt Mo

It’s time for several thousand Mets fans to find other ways to spend out time and money next summer. This organization is committed solely to protecting the Wilpons stake in ownership. I am done. I haven’t been to a game in two years. No more merchandise either.

  6. TX

Dickey for fowler and a prospect or two?

  7. Stick

I don’t care to get obsessed with the Wilpons trying to save the team for themselves. All that really means is they are business owners, trying to keep their business financially solvent. Can’t blame them for that. You would not expect every businessman to immediately sell when they ran into a financial crunch.

you could though try to still be as successful in your business (in this case, competing and winning) as possible within the financial constraints.

  8. Mr North Jersey

Mr Magoo of Metsparadise this is what you are missing regarding Wright and his contract.

    Wrights yearly salaries of
    2013: $11 million
    2014: $20 million
    2015: $20 million
    2016: $20 million
    2017: $20 million
    2018: $20 million
    2019: $15 million
    2020: $12 million

Total $138M before anything is even deferred.

Wright is deferring then $3M of his 2013 salary which brings it down from $11M to $8M for 2013.

He then will be deferring $2.5M per year from 2014 thru 2018.

The $100M budget is just an estimate based on what the Mets GM said himself it might be around. After Wright signed there was talk by ownership that it could increase but until it actually does I am using the Mets GM earlier statement.

Hope that helps and feel free to comment here we look forward to it along with everyone else at Metsparadise.

    1. Stick

I bet it doesn’t even crack 90 at this point, and may not even get close when you factor in all these deferrals.

Their money, spend what they want. Just don’t complain if people don’t buy tickets.

  9. Matt Mo

They will still buy tickets. Many Mets fans are imbeciles.

    1. Stick

not every fan obsesses over the GM and owners, or the financial condition of the team.

They just like to go out to the park and watch baseball games, and happen to be Mets fans.
