interesting. plus makes the deal look more favorable, in terms of potentially being a drag on the team at the end. The last 2 years are less than what Bay is getting for 2012 or 2013, and the last year way less.

so this deal should not be a giant albatross or out of line at all assuming Wright can have something passing for a normal career progression. by 2020, $12 mill will be entry level wages!

      Agree. Win/win for both sides.

Why hasn’t David joined with Molly to make “Molly Beer”? Blonde / Brown / Red / etc. All with her being the face on the beer, different hair color for each flavor. Then have it sold at CitiField. Make her the official Met girl and Met beer of choice…

    1. Stick

No, Inky and Pinky and Bud Light shall not be displaced.

      1. TX

Then Inky and Pinky will represent BL, and we’ll let the fans choose. Could make it into a 1/2 a year long thing, culminating in a crowning at the ASB. Anything not to focus on the standings, right?

Because unlike DW, Molly apparently does NOT have a no trade clause?

I didn’t even know Wright had a girlfriend until he thanked her at the press conference last week.

Oops. made a mistake in the salty rant post. DW is saving them $8mill this year. I thought the deferrals started in 2014.

actually, now that I look at this, I wonder when the heck the defferals are getting paid out? Anyone know? because if it is after the end of the deal, the contract is more like a 9 year deal at the same money (since he is deferring 15.5mill). I know Santana started paying them a few years later, so he currently is pretty much getting his annual salary.

    1. greggofboken

Santana’s are paid out in annual increments, 5 years after the year of the deferral. If Wright’s deal follows the same structure, your point about the 2019-2020 salary is well made.

I still have not heard if the salary (deferred or not) is booked in the year he’s earned it, or if it weights down future payrolls. It’s a material concern.

      1. Stick

even for the mets, 2.5mill/year can’t be that material. I hope…

        1. greggofboken

Sorry. The thing I find material is the practice, rather than the money itself.

The Wilpon’s addiction to “buy now, pay later” is part of what’s put the club in such a financial mess. With Bay’s deferral and Wright’s deferrals (which Alderson today hedges his bets about being reinvisted in this year’s payroll), fresh off they’re being spared form the pains of the lawsuit, they’re again engaging in the practice.

If Wright’s deferrals were being booked in the year he earns them and not counted against future payrolls, I wouldn’t be alarmed.

You know the Sandy ship is sinking of Amazing Avenue is chiming in:

This is my favorite from the comments under that article:

December 17th, 2008 quote from the Daily News re Madoff

Jeff Wilpon insisted Wednesday that those substantial losses will “not at all” affect the Mets or any of their related businesses as they move into their new stadium in 2009. “It’s not what we believe, it’s that we know what our financial position is,”

The real problem was, is and remains ownership. Reason I won’t join the coeur is b/c I just can’t get into shooting the messenger.

Sandy has gotten us Emaus, Hu, Carrasco, FFrank, Rauch, and the Pagan trade.

Not his fault ownership cannot spend and Omar left us barren, but Sandy has sucked as a GM too.

        3-part fault here.

        1. Stick

a bunch of deck chairs. I also did not have a problem with the Pagan trade at the time, though it did not work out.

all cheap, ST, filler parts for a team no one wants to go to.

But it would certainly have been nice if he had done a better job.

He did, however, make some good moves. Capuano, Takagoomy, and some others.

when you shop the clearance aisle at walmart, you ain’t coming out with much!

I do agree he has not shown to be much of a GM, but it has been a long time since he was working under normal conditions. Would it matter? WHo the hell knows. But, he is gone within 1 year anyway odds are.

        2. srt

Maybe….but I’m of the opinion that Stick has stated before….SA wasn’t really brought here to be the GM as much as the financial officer.

I can’t help wondering what SA gets out of all this.
He’s was in his mid 60s when he came here. Had a good job at MLB, probably virtually stress free and a lot less hours than his current job. To me, coming here to take over this circus was a step down. He’d already been there, done that.

I’m thinking he heard what he wanted from Selig when he asked him to do this and he asked ‘what’s in it for me?’

          1. Stick

either tired of trips to the Dominican, it was a big raise, he felt like a challenge, or bud promised to retire and recommend him to be the commissioner.

            You pick!

        3. gategem

Kong, your standards are just a wee bit excessive. What you and your comrades need is a trip to Ceetar Land for an infusion of optimism. So go forth and may your trip be fruitful. :-)

    More details on Wright’s contract.

    This from Adam Rubin.

The $15.5 million in deferred money owed by the Mets to David Wright in the third baseman’s new contract will be paid in equal installments from 2021 through 2025, according to the AP.

Wright will receive $3.1 million per year during that five-year span. His eight-year deal expires in 2020.

Wright agreed to defer the money without interest.

    1. Stick

good deal for the mets, and a relatively minor hit for whoever owns the team in 2021…

even if still the Wilpons, the low budget teams will be over 100mill by then, and 150 is likely to be “mid market” at best.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Well if the Mets sell for say $6B I think in honor of the sexy Kelly Bundy played by Cristina Applegate I think between you and me we can come up with at least 6B.

I mean there must be at least 100 B’s in one page of any given newspaper.
