The Mets, who reportedly never ruled out the possibility of Torres returning, can scratch him off the possibilities list as Torres signed with the Giants for a 1 year $2M contract. Torres, who was acquired by the Mets during the 2011 Winter meetings in a trade along with pitcher Ramon Ramirez for Mets CF Angel Pagan, was just coming off a down year where he hit .221 with 4 HR and 19 RBI and because of the Giants “lack of financial flexibility” at the time according to Giants GM Brian Sabean their options were limited and the Giants GM made the move for Pagan. Which turned out to be a great move as Pagan was a catalyst in helping the Giants win this past WS.
Torres, who was a fan favorite and winner of the 2010 ‘Willie Mac’ Award for most inspirational player and helping the Giants win a WS in 2010, thanked the fans for their support after the trade was announced saying also that he was “never going to forget San Francisco.” So you can imagine why Torres said he could not “stop laughing” from the joy saying, “It’s such a great feeling” regarding coming back to San Francisco.
At one point Torres even called upon that old Tony Bennett classic “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” saying, “My heart was there. The Giants were the team that gave me an opportunity.”

good for him, and thanks to S.F. for eliminating the possibility of Sandy bringing him back. Though of course, in a couple of months when Sandy wakes up from his Mai Tai hangover, and heads to the dumpster to finish his off season shopping, I am sure he will fins someone even worse to get.
and OT, and I know this might sound petty, but watching the Eagles self destruct in epic ways (at home) still puts a smile on my face.

I’ve found the Giants fans’ reaction to Torres a mystery. The WSJ ran a short profile on him that outlines his difficulty in focusing, challenges in retaining information, and the like.

I didn’t see Gigante, and I understand that he can only manage 2-3 hours of sleep a night.
My memories of him will always be of his back to the camera, chasing after the ball that’s sailed over his head yet again, turning an F8 into a double….and wondering why, halfway into the season, he’s still playing that shallow.
I suppose the Giants fans took to him for the hurdles he has had to overcome. But when I watched him, I couldn’t help wondering “How much sleep did this guy get last night?”
I’m happy enough that he’s in a place where others will appreciate him more than I did. Maybe both of us will sleep better.

He had a really nice 2010 season, and all it takes to enamor yourself with a fanbase is a good year where your team is successful (this is why I think they really took to him, though documented adversity helps). Hell, I know tons of Mets fans that still love Jeff Francoeur, and his only “adversity” is that he’s horrendous at baseball. It’s always hard to tell how a fanbase will be influenced by a player, regardless of talent/performance.
I fully agree with your sentiment, good for him going back to a fanbase that loves and appreciates him. I wish him well, but he’s easily replaced for less money.

Does ANYONE know if we re-sign Dickey to an extension if the Mets CAN even trade him right away? I know the rule is for newly signed FA that they can’t be traded but does it still apply for extensions? While some have said yes, others have said no and then others have even said yes you may trade him but the players union might file a grievance and then others have even said that it would even further detract from the Mets name in the FA market in the future.
So before we all talk about how they should sign him and then trade him, is it even possible or logical?
Prismo

Also, I’m pretty sure if Dickey was traded to the Rangers he’d accept a 2 year/26 mil offer from them. So it’s kind of a moot point.
TX
12/14/2012-11:32am at 11:32 am (UTC -4)
This per MLBTR:
One general manager told ESPN.com’s Buster Olney the Mets could increase Dickey’s trade value by giving the knuckleballer the two-year, $26MM extension he apparently seeks. Dickey will earn $5MM in 2013, so adding two years and $26MM would essentially make it a three-year, $31MM deal.
Read more at http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/#k8fSQQrSW0R3oYqs.99
So, if a general manager is saying that, how could it be that they could not be traded if they sign a contract? Unless the extension would cancel that “can’t trade until June” thing.

Was thinking about that Seaver trade as well.
Given the fact that more often than not, trading an established ‘star’ for prospects usually doesn’t work out as well for the team getting the prospects – the FO needs to hold out for what they’re asking, instead of settling for what they can get. If it comes down to settling, then just extend him.

12/14/2012-2:32pm at 2:32 pm (UTC -4)
Absolutely. Since the start I’ve been in the ‘trade Dickey/Wright for top level prospects that can help develop a long term winner’ camp. I won’t, however, accept trading one of them for some filler pieces just to make a move. That would be lunacy, especially with Dickey’s contract demands being well below market value for what he represents on and off the field.
We have to keep in mind that this is the Mets organization, so whatever they do will likely lead to miserable failure.

side thought: we know, because Sandy said so, there is theoretically money to spend (has to be ~20mill with the Wright and Bay deferrals). If Dickey goes for these 2 guys (both minimum wage or close), figure another 5mill. so they have to have an easy 15-20 to spend, while still having 5-10 in reserve.
and if this happens, they will still have a gaping hole in the OF corners and potentially pen. So they damned well better get some respectable hitting for a corner.
Ideally a RH platoon mostly bat (Ross?) and another guy to play every day.
even if they can’t, 2 RH OFs (Actually could be Ross and hairston).
and OF of Duda/Hairston platooning in LF, Gose in CF, and baxter/Ross in RF might actually not be horrific.

as long as the lower level prospect coming back was good.
There is another (nuclear) option. Trade Dickey to a team that is not the Blue Jays. Trade Neise for D’auberville and gose (mets could give a prospect back too). Then sign lannan and bring back big poof.

If this happens, it means the Mets now are the Pirates, the A’s, or the Expos.
I could understand Beltran and Reyes, and I understand trading Dickey for d’Arnaud or Profar or even Olt and Martin.
But aside from a few HR–and surely he would hit less in Citi–Thole is a BETTER offensive player than Arencibia.
And thus far, Gose has not hit much at ANY level, including in Las Vegas in the PCL.
If this trade happens, it is 100% a salary dump, and if anyone even suggests it is part of a “plan” to improve the team, well…..

What you said, Kingman. I really don’t care for Arencibia, see him as a platoon or back up catcher. I don’t care how old Dickey is. He’s the reigning CY winner and is not likely to regress much – at least will put up solid ’10 and ’11 numbers.

Seeing the rumors that Dickey won’t sign an extension to play in Toronto. If true, have to wonder if TD is involved in this deal…if Jays will pull him back b/c of the no extension.
Then..at that point wonder if SA accepts lesser prospects or nixes the trade with the Jays all together. I hope it’s the second one. I just cannot see giving up Dickey unless we’re getting something of equal value back. 3 mediocre or platoon type guys do not equal one highly rated catching prospect – IMO.

Martino is now reporting on Twitter that rumors on Dickey not willing to sign an extension with Toronto is false.
I at first thought it might make sense b/c of maybe colder weather in April/May and his knuckleball – plus being that much farther away than his home town in TN. He said he liked NY in part b/c it’s a 2 hour plane flight to home.
Don’t know what is fact at this point.
Saw a comment on MMO that a couple of these prospects rumored to be in this trade (and TD is one of those) – have inflated numbers last season in AAA due to home field being Las Vegas. Really? Dang….how do you figure out what they can really do then?

and not wanting to upset Knog, But Dickey is every bit, if not more, focused on his money than Wright was. He was pretty clear from things he said, and what he was doing, that locking in his “retirement plan” was a huge thing for him. This was not a guy that that was anxious to try and play out his deal to hit FA! Way too much risk for him.
And FYI, Toronto is a fantastic city that would love RA. And it is 120 miles CLOSER to Nashville than NYC is.
not sure about the Vegas impact on those guys, but they did just as good on the road, and are talented. And key to the Mets, both are highly regarded defensively. And of course, will be dirt cheap for many years to come!

Agree stick about Dickey and the money. He’s no spring chicken, he worked so hard to get where he is right now – I can’t blame him for taking that ‘retirement’ money. Pitching in Toronto for 3-4 years is probably a small price to pay for being set for life.

Oh wait a minute…Toronto has a dome,right?
Forget my comment about the weather then.
They’ve also got that god-awful artificial turf, not that it should affect Dickey any.

oh, I saw at that other place that your stalker is still obsessed. Amazing. You better say something mean about Sandy.

LOL…
Seriously though, I’ve never ‘read’ an angrier person on any of these board then him. It’s baseball for crying out loud – not religion or politics or something equally as personal in opinion.
Crazy.

Way OT: Anyone else watch/read Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire? I’m veritably obsessed.

All kinds of rumored packages. I like the darnaud syndergaard DJ Davis one the best. Hard to believe tho.

I don’t see how that package works, though I’d have no complaints.

anyway, just get a deal done, and let’s move on to the rest of the work needed. Of course we don’t know what that is until we see the return.
let us assume it is Gose for CF and Travis for C.
the IF in theory is set. So is CF.
We need a SP: Get lannan?
We need 2 corner OFs: here I am going out of the box. One side will be a platoon (baxter or Kirk and a RH batter – Hairston? Hoffman? Some other huge split guy?
but for LF, not cody ross, but Soriano. Need the RH power, and I will take a chance with his D out there in LF, with gose covering for him.
OF could be Soriano/gose/(baxter/hairston) with Kirk as the 5th. Should get some production out of that, and pretty cheap overall (Cubs will eat a lot of salary).
Thole can be the BU catcher. Someone will be the BU MI.
rotation santana/neise/lannan/harvey/gee
Pen, just need to find another back end/could close arm: That vinnie guy from Cleveland for Duda+.
OK, off season done.

I’ll be curious to see how many or these rumors become facts.
Remember the late morning where they said Lee heading to the Yankees was all but a done deal and by 4pm he landed in Philly? LOL.
