So there is a 7 player deal in the works with Toronto that includes Dickey. I’m not sure about you, but I really like how Alderson is handling this team.
Today’s question: How do you think Sandy Alderson is doing as GM of the Mets? So far, what do you think is his biggest mistake?

HIs biggest mistake is the way he handled Reyes. YEa he got injured and it hampered getting a good package back, but he really blew it by just letting him walk. The way he handled the situation in the off-season was also very poor.
If you want to rate him now it’s a clear F. He has done nothing to improve the team. The team has gotten worse and all he is doing is reducing payroll. Probably should wait a couple years before effectively grading so we can see what these prospects have done.

I agree that Reyes was a big mistake, but not for the same reason I think they should have made it the first priority when he was hired to try and work out a reasonable contract extension before his last year. Given that he was coming off a few iffy years, but was still young, I think it could have been doable in terms that would have worked for both sides.
By the time he was a FA, I assume that the financial circumstances changed, but I do believe that they were still hoping to get him back, but only up to some limit (that yes, they “offered” to his agent) that was obviously well below what Miami gave him.
would they have been better off trading him at the deadline? Probably, with the caveat of course being if he had not pulled lame. IMO, once he did that, any chance of getting a difference maker prospect was out the window, so it made more sense to just keep him

That’s why I can’t really kill him too much for the Reyes thing, the injury had to have dropped his trade value enough to make any deal less than exciting.

As far as I’m concerned, his biggest gaffe was last off-season’s bullpen makeover (including the Pagan trade). He guessed really badly on multiple fronts and I’d say talent evaluation of players outside the organization is his weakest area.
He’s seemed a shrewd negotiator and his judgment of this organization’s talent seems fairly sharp.
At this point, I give him a C/C+. But if this deal goes through, I think he gets his mark changed.

We could make a better assessment of Alderson’s moves if we had a list of which moves during his tenure have been his, and which have been Jeff Wilpon’s.

Ding, Ding, Ding!
From what I read, SA would have preferred to trade Wright and extend Dickey.
If that’s true, given he had to deal with opposite circumstances – and if this Jays deal goes through – I’d say he does very well rolling with the punches and making the best out of a bad situation. Bad situation being working for the Wilpons. But hey….since I believe he was part of the Selig/Wilpon deal to save the team, have to think he was at least somewhat aware what he was getting into.
Not sure if money were no object if SA would have upped his offer to Reyes to at least compete with Miami. That’s something we’ll never know.
Obviously the Pagan trade didn’t work out, to put it mildly. But the thought process at the time was very good. No way to know Ramirez would regress to the depths he did.

I won’t kill a guy for a move in hindsight if I supported it at the time. And I thought then it was certainly reasonable. Sometimes things just go bad.

Sandy? Tough to grade. If you believe in the SRT theory, he gets an A for “saving” the team for the Wilpons (I actually don’t see a problem though with the owners trying to keep their business solvent).
Me? I will give him a generous D. I think he did a lousy job with what he did do, filling out the roster. And outside of 1 prospect, he did nothing toward rebuilding either. And that is what bugs me more. I think the team needed to be blown up and major changes done (call it rebuilding if you want_.
but, they seemed to be happy doing nothing. Waiting for non-existent prospects to suddenly materialize is not a plan.
I also think he is done after 1 more year, and this scares the willies out of me, Jeffy will become the actual GM (with JP in name only, hanging out at home cashing checks for doing nothing).

No matter who the next GM is, Jeff inheriting this team most definitely scares the hell out of me.
That boy has a chip on his shoulder. What do you want to bet he goes through GMs like water?

Or just names himself GM, like Jerry Jones. Yikes.

I think he already has in reality, he just does not have the balls to do it for real and take all the heat. Shit or get off the pot boy.
though maybe when Fred dies and he promotes himself to the big boss, he will be too busy and important to bother with the details, and will let a GM do his job?
nah, not happening!

Well, the Giants certainly killed this afternoon early. Not even the 2nd quarter yet, and I can safely go out and do chores. Might as well miss the rest of the carnage.
Go Cleveland! Go Pitt! since the damned Giants can’t take care of business themselves, have to root for the teams behind them to lose also. Hey, backing into the playoffs is better than not getting there at all.

I think the Giant’s are bi-polar. You never know which team is showing up, and today, the bad news bears version did. This is brutal.

His biggest gaffe is how he is handling the media. His smarmy attitude just opens the door for criticism.
Wheeler is a plus, as is dickey trade and wright re-sign.
Not trading Reyes, basically anything BP related and the Pagan trade (though I liked it at the time) were minuses. I’d also say not turning middling prospects into some sort of useful OF option is a minus as well.
Assuming the Dickey trade goes through, I’ll give him a C+ with an easy upgrade to a B+ if these prospects pan out.

But you and stick are the few and the proud. The rest of the masses don’t understand snark and post like Sandy means every word and some how kicked their dogs and made a play on their wives/girlfriends, even though there’s no evidence to suggest Sandy did.

the world is full of stupid people. And some met related sites seem to be disproportionally loaded with them.
