Mets Acquire Collin Cowgill, Jefry Marte Headed to Oakland

The Mets have traded for outfielder Collin Cowgill. Prospect Jefry Marte will be moved to the Athletics organization.

  • Cowgill is a right-handed (bats right, fields left) outfielder who has a bit of major league experience at all three outfield positions. \
  • Cowgill is team-controlled through 2018 at the earliest and is currently pre-arbitration eligible.

His major league stats are as follows:
BA/OBP/SLG/OPS
2011 (36 games) .239/.300/.304/.604
2012 (38 games) .269/.336/.317/.654

  • Cowgill was selected in the 5th round of the 2008 draft by the Diamondbacks.
  •  Cowgill’s time in the minors from 2008-2012 produced an impressive line of .291/.371/.470/.841 overall.
  • Prior to the 2011 season Cowgill was ranked by Baseball America as the Athletics’ #11 prospect. They also deemed him as having the “best outfield arm” in the A’s system. Also in 2011, Baseball America gave Cowgill these honors for his time in the Pacific Coast League: Best Baserunner, Best Defensive OF, Most Exciting Player.

well, now that Sandy woke up from his nap, he seems to be really active.

will have to look this dude up. I heard his name mentioned earlier but have no clue what he is all about.

marte though was pretty well redunant now with Wright signed, so if converted into a usefull OF, a logical move.

    1. gategem

If Sandy would have followed your preferred timetable he would have traded RA for a bucket of balls and signed players from one of the old geezers (people your age!) fantasy camps they run each year. ;-(

i really think i’d do a pretty good job of that. hell, if i can deliver collin cowgill, I could turn around this economy and get guns out of the hands of murderers too.

        You plan on invading China?

The drug cartels would get rid of you before you had a chance to get rid of the guns.

I would invade planet Mongo if it would earn me your vote!

I like it . short guy, but put up good ML numbers. RH too, and he plays all 3 OF positions. Worth Marte. Plus he is cheap for another couple of years.

New starting CF? helpful platoon guy?

I suppose they could sign Hairston, and have Duda/cowgirl/baxter/Hiarston/Kirk as the 5 man rotation, and have a decent mix of D, R/L, and some potential for speed/power.

I still think however that Duda could be traded at some point. Still hoping he is part of a package to Cleveland for Vinny Boombatz.

    1. darknova306

So the mancrush on Duda is done?
I’d definitely have no issue with flipping him to an AL team as a potential DH for a bullpen arm.

      1. Stick

I still love his bat, and think if he gets into the right situation he can have some monster years. But not sure he will ever be able to do it trying to play LF, so it may require a move to 1B or DH.

        1. gategem

I love his bat too and it’s in mint condition as he very rarely hits anything hard with it.

  6. oleosmirf

Well maybe this is the leadoff batter we so desperately need. His stats aren’t that impressive, but 30 SB in 2011 in AAA with lots of CF experience is something we desperately need.

  7. Prismo

I updated the post with some (hopefully) useful information.

  8. Prismo

Worst case scenario: Cowgill is Torres (OF defense, speed on the basepaths, no offense)….but 8 years younger and much cheaper.

Best case scenario: He becomes our everyday centerfielder. This is definitely possible, but he has to start hitting at the major league level. I’m not sure if they’ll give him a shot or not.

    1. greggofboken

Hmm….I was thinking he was the Hairston role/platoon w/Baxter.

      1. Stick

I think Prismo is right. This is a guy for CF. Everyday? Platoon with Kirk? who knows.

I think Hairston (or equivilent) is still needed for a corner platoon.

        1. Prismo

Maybe him and Kirk duke it out in ST for starting CF?

          Mets sign Ross for RF?

          1. Stick

Not really a big Ross fan. I honestly think he will get $ based on his name, not what he will do for you. But, he could work, though still a platoon guy.

hairston, if no more than 2 years and budget friendly, would be fine too.

either one platooning with Baxter could give a solid production out of RF.

Kirk and Cowgill, see what happens in CF.

Just leaves LF to figure out.

          2. wanny

I think another trade for another outfielder is the most likely route. Hairston will cost more money than the Mets need to spend at this point.

LF Duda (I am willing to give him one more shot out there because of the power potential and because he’s not really a splits kind of hitter and could play every day)

CF Kirk/Cowgill (here I’d play a loose platoon but would also give each guy some shots in the corners for more at bats and, especially, to see if Kirk can figure out how to hit lefties)

            RF Trade

            Baxter – 5th outfielder/PH

          3. TRS86

I guess at worst you could find another Cowgirl to pair with Baxter for RF?

          4. Stick

Try this again. I either forgot how to use the internet, or this place has moderation.

Stick I edited the url to a much simpler one.

    2. Q-Rod

It’s just a great ‘small’ move. He’s a much better deal for the Mets than Torres. And Marte is beyond blocked – Wright, Flores and Aderlin Rodriguez all play 3B. And the Mets had a logjam at the position in the minors. I guess they play Flores at 3B full time (more or less) in Vegas and A-Rod plays 3B at AA.

Love it. Hairston (or someone like Hairston) next.

      1. Stick

        still have Lutz too, right?

        1. TRS86

Speaking of, has anyone ever really seen Lutz play? Is it possible that he could transition to the OF? He’s played 3B, 2B and 1B.

          1. Stick

he has bad feet doesn’t he? But you have to figure, if there was a chance he could do it, they would have tried by now.

    3. jessep

I think RF has to an obvious cause for concern.

Alex Rios 12.5, 12.5 and a club option of 13.5 with $1m buyout.

David DeJesus 4.25m, 6.5m club with 1.5m buyout

      Michael Cuddyer 10.5, 10.5

and then of course Cody Ross. Those are the 4 most obvious potentials in my book for RF.

      1. Stick

2 years max I think. All goes back to whether they can find someone that is likely to be a LT part of the foundation (like Myers would have been). If not, someone like these guys, though I doubt they want to pay what some of them are getting for a placeholder.

I honestly think they are in a prime position to get by with 1-2 platoons for a year. Cheaper, and probably just as productive overall as slotting in a FT guy with issues.

  9. TRS86

What the hell happen to him in AAA last year?

    .354 .430 .554 .984 in 2011
    .254 .312 .373 .685 in 2012

    1. gategem

      He’s the next “Don” Bosch.

  10. Daniel Stein-Sayles

Cowgill is interesting and giving up Marte is pretty good but what does Cowgill really provide? I fee like he is on a similar level to the guys the team already has, but I guess the more guys we have the more chance one of them pops.

    1. Prismo

Nah, he’s basically a Torres replacement in my mind – unless he proves himself to be a viable starting option. But he plays great defense – something our potential backup outfielders of Baxter and Hairston lack. Late game defensive sub/baserunning sub. I think that’s the least you can expect of him.

      1. Daniel Stein-Sayles

I agree that will be a good role for him but the Mets still need another legitimate starting outfielder or the outfield is still going to be embarassing.

  11. Bryan

I like the trade. I’ve always liked Marte’s talent and I loved his bat speed when I saw him in person a few years ago, but I’m not sure he’ll ever become a major league starter, and at 3B has little future with the Mets.

  12. wanny

This guy is a guy new yorkers will like. There’s some Eric Byrnes to his game. Not as much pop, maybe a bit more patience. He and Kirk would make a nice platoon in CF — two guys who play the game Terry Collins’ way.

  13. greggofboken

Off-topic, but Rubin has a summary of Dickey’s remarks to the NY media today.

    It’s quite worth reading.

    Hats off to R.A. Dickey.

    Now get me some Markakis!

    1. wanny

is there some kind of rumor? cant imagine baltimore wants to move him right now (though he does get paid a bit much)

      1. TX

1/2 humor, half wishful thinking. He looked, at least to me, one of the more moveable OF, though he’d cost an arm and a leg.

More along the lines of always like him.

    Hello Cowgill in the sand…

    I know obscure.
