CBS Sports Jon Heyman is reporting the Dodgers are looking for a reliever and could make a play for New York Mets reliever Bobby Parnell. Heyman writes,
Sources suggest the Dodgers are considering a variety of relievers, and could also make a play for either Indians closer Chris Perez or Mets reliever Bobby Parnell instead. The Dodgers would prefer a left-hander, but many of their best choices appear to be right-handers — including Hanrahan, Perez and Parnell.
Heyman writes that 2 possible pitchers available are Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang.

I honestly think Parnell should be close to untouchable. Unlike some people who have decided he is unfit to ever close, I think he is close to putting it all together. Given his contract status and absolute lack of pen talent, I really don’t want to give him up.
and not for an old SP. Now, if they have a young OF with upside, then we can talk.

I tend to agree.
Especially since we’ve only got 3 BP arms at the moment: FF, Edgin along with Parnell.
I know some are down on Parnell but I think second half last year especially, he really looked solid. Since our BP more than stunk first 3 months last season, I’d rather hold onto Parnell. I’d give up FF in a NY minute though.

Untouchable? Really? His first “good season” was due to a significant drop in his BABIP. I’ll agree that some fans may undervalue him a bit, but I find it hard to think of him as something worth clamoring for (outside of the “we like to have as many live arms as possible” philosophy). If he nets a return that fills a need, go for it.

While BABIP has a significant luck factor I seem to remember in the second half last year there appeared to be less balls hit hard off of him.

Just posted this in another topic:
Heyman says the Dodgers are interested in Parnell (among others). As most of you know, I have no faith in Parnell. But with the state of the current bullpen, I don’t think the Mets can give him away for one year of a Chris Capuano.
I’d be interested in Alex Castellanos and Chris Withrow, who could develop into a similarly shaky reliever. Castellanos is a 26 y.o. who struggled early in his MiLB career and has seemed to come on as he’s gotten older. His career minor league line is .294 .365 .509. He has played all over the field and has apparently been solid in OF corners.
The kid strikes out a lot but seems to have done a bit better with that last year. While Sandy doesn’t seem attracted to kids like this, I think he has to be interested in guys with any pop in their bats right now.

I take it both Alex Castellanos and Chris Withrow are in the Dodgers organization?
Dang, Wanny…you certainly know a lot about other team’s farm systems.

Hey, we could always pick up Beato again:

I don’t necessarily want to give up on Parnell, but I’m not interested in yet another cloer audition for him. I have no idea why the front office called him untouchable. Harang’s fine, but in the situation we’re in, we’re better off hanging onto Parnell for setup duties.
I know I’m likely to be alone in this notion, but I think Francisco will be better in his second year than he was net-net in his first. He had abnormally poor results.

I am with Stick.
Parnell is still too young, inexpensive, and loaded with potential to trade.
When one looks at our bullpen, this becomes even more glaring.
Based on the very mercurial nature of closers and relievers in general, it is still entirely possible that Parnell eventually becomes closer, or at the very least a hugely valuable setup man.
He must stay unless we get more than he is worth back a la the Dickey deal.

Sandy isn’t trading Parnell unless he gets back a proven commodity. Puig? Heh.

Puig already makes too much money for the Mets!
Parnell is 28 already. How long will we wait for him to develop into a reliable late inning reliever?

I can wait another year. I think if he pitched inside much more then he’d be so much better.

Like Greg and Wanny, I am all set with Parnell. The guys best pitch has no movement to it. Add a little pressure and he always gets rocked. I think the only issue we have is so bad and there is currently do depth why trade away someone that is still somewhat cost controlled (arb starts this year).
In my eyes Parnell is not a part of the solution overall and the Mets are not trying to win this year, so if we can get something that has better upside I am for it.
