The R.A. Dickey trade might very well be the last big move Sandy makes. I personally think he’s going to hit the Dollar Store down the street to pick up a couple of outfielders.
However, I do like how Scott Hairston performed for the Mets last year.
Today’s Question: Would you bring back Hairston, even if he wanted a little more than the 1 million he recieved last year?

If we’re not going to trade for a real starting OF, I have no heartache bringing Hairston back. However, I think he’s asking for way more than just the million or so he got last year.
If Cody Ross’s contract is any indication, I’m thinking he’s probably asking for something like 8 MIL/2 years. I’d still do it, if he’s the only OF we sign. If he comes close to his production of last year, we can always trade him, if necessary.

Why bother. he is not a starter, and he is definitely gonna need to get more money. The team has no intention to win this season, so why throw money into the fire.

But he’s not going to get a littlre more. He’s going to get about 5 times more. And I’d pass. Ludwick and Ross have signed and they were his market competition. He has 4 teams after him. One way or the other, Scott’s going to get paid. If it’s $5M, it shouldn’t be by us.

I read quotes over on MLBTR a couple of times in the past few weeks where Hairston wants to come back to the Mets, go figure.
I can only assume it’s b/c knowing the OF we’ve got going in, he knows he’ll get more playing time than some of the other teams, Yankees included. They’ve supposedly made him an offer but right now, they’ve got 3 starting OFs.

I think you covered it. PT is important to guys. Not everyone wants to go to a team like the yanks if they are going to sit on the bench most of the time.
mostly of course, they go to where the money is.
also, for all the grief the fans are giving the team (owners/FO), this is still a prime place to be most likely. Brand new state of the art stadium and facilities. Living in NYC as a wealthy athlete. So lots of reasons to want to be on the Mets.

a little more, sure. but only as a bench guy/platoon player. Not as anything passing for a FT player.
so if it was $3mill instead, then yes. But not for what Ross got. Or if I have to see him starting against RH pitching.

actually, one of the real interesting plot lines for 2013 to me is seeing how some of the less experienced guys fair this year. Will they take the next step up? If so, the team will look a whole lot less sucky in 2013.
Neise did it last year, but could really blossom this season. Gee, Ike, Murphy, parnell and Tejada are all young vets who have shown signs, and should have enough time in to step up if they are ever going to.
The barely rookies like Kirk and Harvey are always a crapshoot in year 2 of course. But the others have enough time in where they should be “real” players at this point.

I’ve got high hopes for Harvey. He’s actually one prospect that came up and exceeded the hype for him.
IDK about Kirk. If he’s going to be a starting OF, they really need to work on that K count of his.
Valdespin…..ugh. I don’t see him as anything other than a utility type player. He’s a hacker still and I’m not sure that will ever change.

Kirk? To me, a potentially very good platoon guy/4th OF. I don’t think he will ever become an everyday starter type, but could happen.
now, something like Cowgill/Kirk for one OF platoon might actually be reasonably productive. Or Cow and Baxter.
I am fine this year with getting 1 legit starting everyday OF and running platoons at the other 2 spots.

yes, harvey should be our next ACE , and i have still hope kirk can figuering it out at the plate , he and Mike B. bringing energy to the table thats for sure , give them some ABs . Cant wait for the season to start

There you go again trying to convince yourself the team will be relevant if development occurs as it “should.”
But wait. Harvey had such a small sample size that it’s difficult to project how he responds as the league adjusts to him. Gee is trying to return from serious surgery, but assuming the health issues are resolved, he probably will be as he showed last season which was better than his talent projects. Niese may have already taken his significant step up and the rest will probably be minor adjustments by both the league and Niese. And so it goes. There is no reason not to dream and rationalize but last season you precipitously convinced yourself this was a playoff team and the falloff in the second half caught you off guard.

Not much to say that hasn’t been said. If he’ll come back for a small raise over last year, and not be out there full time, then I’d do it. The outfield market looks like it push his price up significantly and he’s even said he wants to be a full time player.

so, swisher to Cleveland for 4/56 guaranteed (plus a vesting option). So the going rate now for a 33 YO mid-level OF that was seriously aided by playing in a little league park is 4 years at 14mill?
The market is expensive, and if Sandy doesn’t like it, the Mets are never going to sign another FA as long as he is in charge!

I don’t want Hairston. I’d be much happier if they made a move to acquire a younger player who has the potential to play every day and rise along with the rest of the kids. Just as the Mets have Flores and, to a lesser extent, guys like Lutz and Satin, I’m sure there are several talented 24/25 year old guys out there who are blocked and are on teams that have 40 man roster issues.

Or, better yet, sign the Cuban FA, Dariel Alvarez. That would be a very exciting move.
And, as I reviewed my post, I realize there’s a huge talent gap between Flores and Lutz/Satin. So, someone closer in talent to Flores but older and therefore much less of a prospect.

I’d be fully on board a push to sign Alvarez (that’s the outfielder, not the shortstop, right?). It’s the bold upside move that a quasi-rebuilding team like the Mets could really benefit from.

I am with you on Alvarez (yes, he is the OF, Diaz is the SS/2B guy).
Alvarez makes so much sense for the Mets in their current situation that is is an absolute no brainer. Which of course is why there is no chance the mets will do it.
Sandy has done some OK things, but I honestly don’t think this FO has a shred of vision (or balls, whatever you want to call it) to come up with or execute a big, bold move to jumpstart the team.

Stick the Giants have completely collapsed. They’re an embarrassment. I don’t recall another SB winner playing this poorly in the following season. They have had their run and we must thank them for the 2 SB wins but it’s time to rebuild and they definitely need to start with rebuilding the defense under a new DC.

agreed all around. what is even more depressing is that they started great (5-2) and looked like an easy playoff team.
this interestingly, the Giants have a losing record in the 2nd half every year under Caughlin. Even with the 2 SB wins. Proving the playoffs really are a crapshoot!
still a slim chance they back into the playoffs, though at this pint, I have no confidence they can even beat the craptastic Eagles. But if they do get in, I have no idea what to expect. Other than Webster getting roasted , hard and often!

You know who also sucks in the second half, yet doesn’t win a damn thing ever…?
In the past 4 years the Mets are averaging 45.5 wins in the first half, and 29.5 in the second half. Basically, they’re as craptastic as those silly football giants, except the Mets play a sport I can tolerate watching. Also, the Mets go nowhere and will continue going nowhere. Just expecting guys to naturally progress to where those second half declines stop happening is silly. They haven’t won more than 31 games in the second half in over 4 years. There’s ZERO chance the 2013 Mets “surprise us all” with a playoff run.
Just throwing that all out there.

serious question though, why are the Mets consistently doing this? medical/training staff? Lousy FO not adding any good players mid year? Shitty fans in the park getting them down? or what?
Because if guys suck they should do it more evenly throughout the year. Or have a slow start but good (fake out) finish sometimes.
a 1/2 season is a large sample size. if you can play at a level for 3 full months, that should be a reasonable expectation of what you should be able to do in the next 3.

That’s a great question. I really have no clue. Blaming it on the FO for not bringing guys in mid-season seems like a cheap cop-out though. If the team routinely falls apart because they get no reinforcements mid-season, then that’s an indictment of them on a motivational level, which is bad news for a team trying to win a championship.

Based on the contracts given to the other recent Cuban FAs, Alvarez would command a reasonable deal relative to the American FAs.
I don’t think this is about money. I like that they are keeping their powder dry until the right thing comes along.

except this has to be all about money, meaning something like Alverez. Fills a big need, and will be relatively chump change most likely, and not cause them to lose any prospects or draft picks. So not touching the powder, since there is nothing to save that small amount of money on this year.

Yes, Scott Hairston is worth bringing back, and he deserves a raise. But if he’s looking for Cody Ross money, he should go somewhere else. Actually, if he’s even looking for Jonny Gomes money he should go somewhere else. Hairston is not a full-time player, and the Mets need to save money so they can afford to pay someone who is (assuming they ever manage to find that player.)
