This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The ” I’m Up For 2 Mazzy Awards !!!” Edition 01-02-13

Yesterday Shannon Shark and Keith Blacknick from the MetsPolice blog announced the list of nominees for the Mazzy Awards which will be held for the 1st time in person this Saturday at Donovan’s in Woodside Queens starting at 5 O’clock p.m.

Here is a partial list of categories.

  • Mets Player of the Year.
  • The Gunslinger of the Year.
  • Fan Of the Year.
  • The Man Up and Play Better Award.
  • Mets Executive of the year.
  • Best Writer
  • Best Looking.

And many many more awards.

I am up for both the Fan of the Year as well as the Best Writer awards.

To view all the categories, nominees as well as directions to Donovan’s please click here.

I will be on hand for the festivities, and I promise to go all ”Carrie” if I don’t win !

And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:

Original Mets coach, Red Kress would have been 106 today (1907). Kress died suddenly of a heart ailment two months after the Mets inaugural season.

One of the best pitchers in Mets history, David Cone is 50 today (1963). In 7 seasons with the Mets Cone compiled a record of 81-51 with an E.R.A of 3.13.

The New York Mets signed free agent starting pitcher, Mike Birkbeck on January 2, 1992.

The Boston Red Sox signed starting pitcher, Frank Viola of the New York Mets as a free agent on January 2, 1992. Viola had a uneven career with the Mets and it wasn’t surprising that he left the franchise once his contract expired.

The Chicago White Sox signed middle reliever, Barry Jones of the New York Mets as a free agent on January 2, 1993.

Mo Vaughn wishes he was up for a Mazzy !!!

    2. Prismo

I should’ve been up for the “Best Writer Best Looking Award” but I’m glad I’m not, because the name of the award is cringe-worthy.

      1. TX

Maybe “best face for radio” would have been more fitting? ;-P

          YOU BA$TARD

        2. gategem

I understand his avatar is a self portrait. :-)

      2. Media Goon

As usual Ed screwed something up. It isn’t Best looking best writer. They are two separate categories. Best Looking. Best Writer.

And not only that, this isn’t the first ever MP Awards. It is the first one we are doing in person and not just over the internet. Silly Rusty jr.

        1. gategem

Your avatar does you justice. ;-)

While it would be THE biggest deal in this offseason… it is not happening. Stanton is not being traded.

Now, for giggles and because i’m bored/still consuming coffee, is the below enough to get Stanton, and if so, is it really worth it to drop the following to get him?

Wheeler, Flores, Fulmer, Tapia and Ad-Rod/filler type.

    1. TRS86

To me, the more I think about it… the Mets are not ready to trade for Stanton. If you trade all those players for Stanton then what do you really have? A better lineup that is still full of holes, a rotation with no depth and no pen with still no money to spend.

      1. TX

I’m still not sure what I would do in that situation. Yes, it certainly is a blow to the system, but considering how good Giancarlo is (and what an amazing name too) and how cheap he is, and that he fills a need for RH power and an OF spot, it’s tough to say no to him. Of the bunch, I’d say Wheeler will be awesome and I have a feeling Fulmer will be as well. Maybe try to stick in Cecchini instead of Tapia?

I harken back to Graves’ wonderful series and think, we know Stanton is the man. We do not know if Wheeler and company will pan out, though it does seem he will.

        1. TRS86

I agree if the Mets were more ready on the MLB team I would do it in a heartbeat but for right now I think it would just make them worse long-term because I don’t see them spending on MLB talent yet to supplement it.

          1. TX

I see your point. But I’d still pull that trigger.

        2. Stick

for a generational talent type, you do it, and worry about backfilling the prosects later. Besides, there will still be a ton of budget money next off season to try and fill a few more of those holes.

        3. TRS86

To me Stick, unless you sign him to an extension then your window closes to the next 3 years because even adding him 2013 is still lost. Not to mention that he will be getting paid VERY well in 2014 so there goes some of the money needed. I think if it were next off-season and we know more about what the Mets have and what their needs are and how close they are it would be a good move. Which IMO is convenient because at this point I don’t see him being traded until then anyway.

    2. wanny

i think that is too many assets in return for a player that will not make the Mets a contender or get them over the hump from pretender to contender.

the mets still need too many bodies to consider a trade like this and the farm system is not deep enough to withstand the loss of so much talent.

      1. TX

I hear you. I still think that I’d take the proven commodity (and his fantastic name and current salary/controlability) over what may come from that haul.

And yes, I’d prefer the team to give up less, but I think it’ll take something along those lines to for them to trade Stanton.

      2. TRS86

“the mets still need too many bodies to consider a trade like this and the farm system is not deep enough to withstand the loss of so much talent.”

Agreed. They just aren’t ready for this type of trade yet. Think of this as the Keith Hernandez move but a year too early.

    3. darknova306

That’s the kind of move you make when you’re in the situation the Phillies were in when they nabbed Halladay. You know your window is open and you want to put yourself over the top in the short term by cleaning out your farm system’s depth. The Mets are nowhere close. Their ‘window’ is still nailed shut.

      1. TRS86

Actually that window COULD open up quickly if TDA, Wheeler, Harvey, etc develop this year. However, we don’t know that right now for sure.

        1. wanny

if that’s the case, the appropriate course would be to purchase a free agent slugger after the season.

the model for sustained success has to be to develop through the farm and buy free agents to supplement.

          1. TRS86

“the model for sustained success has to be to develop through the farm and buy free agents to supplement.”

            BINGO!!!

FA is not to bring you to the top, it’s to put you over and wasting money on big names before you are ready does nothing but tie up money and spots for when you are ready.

          2. kingman 26

Absolutely true. As the 1986 team proved; with trades more than FAs.

But when you cannot afford to keep your own stars with the one Golden Exception, and when you cannot afford even middling free agents to supplement the team and keep it moving forward, and when you cannot even consider making a trade for someone with a contract like Upton (and you don’t really have the minor league depth to do it anyway), you don’t have a “model” or a “plan”–you just have a precious few blue chip minor leaguers, and an MLB club with, literally, NO outfield, and an incredibly risky and ultra-thin bullpen.

And let’s remember, after Niese and Harvey, Gee is a 5th starter at best, and Johan has won 6 games since 2010. And rotation depth is frightening.

So really, the team MIGHT have a foundation for a great rotation by maybe 2014-2015, but overall, literally has almost nothing else to get very excited about.

Sure, Ike and Tejada are nice players and Wright might regain his 2005–2008 form (or might not), but the team is very far from competing, and again, this division is brutal and will remain so.

“the model for sustained success has to be to develop through the farm and buy free agents to supplement.”

This is very true, but we are only acting middlingly on one part of this equation. There are no more stars to trade for Wheelers and d’Arnauds.

Trading Wright for another 2-3 top prospects and saving that 20 M a year would have been IDEAL for this team.
