Link: Should The New York Mets Pursue Jair Jurrjens?

Over at Metsmerizedonline Mitch Petanick poses an interesting question. Should the New York Mets pursue Jair Jurrjens?

He makes some compelling reasons as to why with some being,

  • They should buy low on Jurrjens and see if he can regain the form that once led him to be an All-Star.
  • They need to fill a hole in the rotation that was left behind when the team traded RA Dickey, so why not take a shot on a young pitcher who has had success at the major league level?

You can read the rest of his reasoning here. Then tell us, what are your thoughts?

At this point, cheap and able to throw on the major league level should be a “hades yes!” on just about anyone.

  2. Mr North Jersey

Fan of mythology but I am not familiar with the “hades yes!” term.

        Ahh OK thx.

He’s probably referring to some level of Dante’s Inferno. We could use some clarity here.

I dunno. He sure looked hurt last year. And it’s his fourth straight year w/a drop in velocity.

The guy I can’t understand that no one’s made any noise about is Jeff Karstens. I’d take him in a minute….yet he’s not gotten so much as a sniff from anyone it seems.

seems like some guys are big “names” that get lots of buzz, and others are “nobodies” that get ignored, even though they likely will be more productive than the name brand model.

and I agree that Jar Jar has to be injured based on how much he has declined at such a young age.

    Adam Rubin!

OK in fairness to Wanny and Mr. N and others I must post this–am in Atlanta at a major music convention and met the Braves’ organ player. He works in the press room, said all the Met writers area actually very cool, and he especially said that Rubin is a great guy, treats him so well, and is always ultra-nice.

He also said Braves management got mad when he played Camptown Races when Duda batted and the crowd started chanting “doo-dah doo-dah”–pretty funny–they told him never to do it again!

    1. Mr North Jersey

You know maybe we could turn that into a “Across America Kingman Style”? :-)

        LOL!

Really, I was thinking of asking him permission to use his comments in an interview, but he seemed like he wouldn’t be into it, as he is hired year-to-year, ownership seems strict, and he loves the job.

But really, I was thinking of you guys when he commented on Rubin—made him seem like a truly down-to-Earth and great guy. Especially also mentioned Brian Costa; this did not surprise me as he seemed ultra-cool at the Ledger.

You lead an interesting life, Kingman.

    3. gategem

I’ve been to Engineering Conventions and believe me you don’t want to attend those but I’ve never been to a music convention. Is it anything like a porn convention (those I’ve been to)?

  5. srt

Hmm….IDK. I would take a flyer if we could be sure he was actually healthy. I’ve got my doubts about that.

Watched ‘Trouble With The Curve’ over the holidays.
Enjoyed it – Clint Eastwood and a baseball movie? Up there on my top list.
The anti saber crowd will love it – lol. It’s exactly opposite of Moneyball, going on the premise that stats and computers can’t tell you all.

Anyway…there’s a bit in the beginning mentioning J. Jurrjens who just pitched a no hitter. I’m thinking….of all pitchers you could have selected for that bit in the movie they pick Jurrjens? Eastwood’s daughter in the movie says something like ‘how did he manage that? he’s nothing but a junkball pitcher anymore’……

mmm Darryl brought him a sandwich. Cool. Well I see your sandwich Mr. Berg and raise you my sandwich story of splitting a sandwich with Joe Pass one New Years Eve when Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits came in and sat down at the table next to us and came over and started asking Mr. Pass for his autograph while we were eating.

I know, who’s Joe Pass most are probably asking but the k-man will certainly know :)

      1. TX

Big fan of Dire Straits. Very cool story.

I’m sure he will be doing something much more interesting than what I do every day. Not that it is setting the bar very high there.

    he really sucked last year.

but I guess you have to be really bad to qualify as a reclamation project, right?

Infusion of $160 Million Gives Mets a Chance to Spend, Perhaps on Talent

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/05/sports/baseball/mets-have-160-million-to-spend-on-talent-if-they-want.html?partner=rss&emc=rss&_r=0

Interesting……I want to buy back RA Dickey with that money.

    1. Stickguy

considering trading Dickey did nothing to lower payroll in 2013, I don’t buy the idea that trading him had anything to do with not being able to afford him (especially since he was looking for a below market ST deal starting in 2014).

More like they had to do something to bring in some young controllable positional building blocks.

though I guess longer term that does let you keep payroll lower!

Personally, if they are going to be sucky to mediocre at best, I say try and get down to TB rays level payroll. Go for the bottom. Just because it would really piss off some truly stupid and obnoxious people. Though maybe not good idea to push your stalkers over the edge?

      1. srt

I meant if the Mets finances weren’t such a mess they probably would have been able to fill a couple of holes via FA and/or trades AND hold onto Dickey. Not that Dickey’s 5 MIL was too expensive for them.

Going to the bottom would have meant trading Wright. I still believe extending him was the Wilpons desire more so than SA. I think if SA had his way, Wright would have been traded and Dickey would have stayed.

        1. gategem

Is it too late to trade Mr. Dimples?

          1. srt

LOL…not going to happen this season.

Stick does not post over there, but does check in from time to time to see if the idiots are still running the asylum (yes) and obsessed with our own fine MF4D (yes, she could probably get a restraining order if desired).
