Here is an estimated breakdown at how things look with the projected 25 man Roster/Payroll for 2013 Minus the reported deferred salary amounts of $5M to Johan Santana, $3M to David Wright and $15M to Jason Bay.
Note: Keep in mind that Johan Santana’s buyout was reported that it will be part of 2013 payroll.

And at least we won’t be hearing about breaking some record going back something like 30 years where the Mets are the only team not to have signed a ML FA.

I do too. I actually wish they had a 2 year with a buy out, but this works too. He pitches well, you might even see him net you a pick if he bolts. Not likely, but it is possible.

they really have an amazingly small commitment beyond 2013.
Pretty much just Wright and Neise are guaranteed, right? man, they could really get that payroll down super duper low with those 2, and 23 guys making $490K!

It is apparently a pretty rough night out at CitiField. It sounds like season ticket holders are at a function where Alderson is taking questions from them. Rubin is retweeting some of what’s coming out of there. Here are some:
——————
Joseph Leopold @JLeopold516
“John Buck is a first rate catcher” – Sandy #Mets
Joseph Leopold @JLeopold516
Sandy on the OF ” I’m not telling any jokes about the outfield. We got lots of guys coming into camp and we in the running for a FA”
Joseph Leopold @JLeopold516
“I can speculate the OF wont be a strength for us this year” – Sandy #Mets
@michebag22: dude in front of me just totally called out sandy alderson for putting a s—– team on the field. there was applause.
Alan Berkson @berkson0
@jyarmis “the reason we haven’t spent the money is not because of Fred Wilpon. It’s because of me” – Sandy Alderson #Mets
Alan Berkson @berkson0
“We understand what the market dictates and we have to be prepared to exist in that market” – Alderson #Mets @jyarmis
Jay Horwitz @Jay_HorwitzPR
Sandy said he isn’t looking at a 10-year plan. He isn’t getting any younger he said.
Michelle Pratt @michebag22
someone just asked if the #Mets are gonna be in the top 5 of spending next year since they’re in the top 5 of ticket prices
Michelle Pratt @michebag22
“am I gonna recommended that we sit here in NYC and function like the Oakland Athletics for the next 10 years? No I’m not.” #mets
Michelle Pratt @michebag22
“I’m not asking you to believe me until you see some manifestation of that which I hope is sooner rather than later.” #Mets

in a word….
Ouch!

Awesome, thanks for consolidating this information. The collapse in ticket sales this year is going to be epic. Out of morbid curiosity I can’t wait to see if they still actually sell out opening day. I didn’t think they did last year but they had some interesting calculation that said it was the largest ever with added on seating capacity, yet, they never actually claimed a sell out I believe.

not much chance that this is a big attendance year. But, since there was also no chance they were scraping up enough $$ to sign the FAs that might have pre-sold a lot of tickets (talking Hamilton, Greinke, and probably someone else), that was really a given. And of course, the team knew it, and baked it into the budget.
only real hope is that the young talent helps (interest the fan, and lead to some more wins). If that happens, people will return.
I just hope I can get up to a game this year. That is based on logistics, and my $$ situation, not whether the team is racing to the playoffs.

Anyway, props for standing up and taking the slings and arrows. If you want to know why he was hired, along with being able to reorganize the organization, he seems perfectly happy to serve as a human shield for Fred.
love the comment about the money. Might be true for a small amount held in reserve (for mid season use?) but I just can’t believe Fred is handing him a lot of payroll (as in buy Josh Hamilton) and Sandy refuses to use it.
Other than that, seems like perfectly reasonable answers. OF is not on paper a strength, but they have a lot of guys coming in fighting for a job , they aren’t trying to be a low budget “moneyball” team forever, and at least see what the team can do before condemning it and him.

From the sound of it, Ricciardi and DePodesta were there. It would have been helfpul for Jeff/Fred to have heard this. I’m unclear on whether they were in atendance.

There’s a difference between having the courage of your convictions and turning a deaf ear to criticism. Sandy’s no dope. He had to know what he was likely to hear. And how important it is not to be dismissive of it — as we’ve heard Jeff do repeatedly.
Sandy has a proclivity at times to comport himself like the smartest guy in the room. He had to know this wouldn’t have been the right tactic in the face of a dwindling audience. Arrogance would have just poured gasoline all over the sentiment. (See Angelos, Peter)
He could have bailed and left it to Ricco or Dave Howard. You have to respect your audience…..even when it doesnt’ seem like they’re particularly respecting you. Unless you’re prepared to live without them.

I am not down on Parnell as some people are. He could still pull a Madson and end up with the job, and do fine at it. IMO, people often read too much into what they perceive to be a guys mental makeup.
but anyway, FFF is probably it to start, but if Edgin or Parnell (or some dark horse live arm type) out performs him, they could win the job. or of course, if he gets hurt and they step in and take over.
though with Terry, you never now what crazy shat he will do, giving a stiff “his” job back!
FFF? Just has to stay healthy. he actually had a long stretch (couple of months) where he was doing just fine, putting up good numbers, and being very reliable. Then he got hurt (ab muscle maybe?) and scufled a bit when he came back, then settled back in.
of course, the team faltering coincided with him (and Johan) going down.
anyway, if triple-F can manage to stay in one piece, there are enough arms available to hopefully piece together a reliable pen, evne without a “superstar” closer.
but what the hell, wign Wilson anyway just in case!

Parnell’s already had three auditions for the closer role and failed in all of them. He’s now in a spot where he’s actually successful. Leave him there. He’s had as many second chances as Lindsay Lohan.
Give Francisco the shot to return to his baseline. As noted, he had periods of success last year. If you want to see what some of the in-house candidates might be able to do, see if Familia might be groomed.

The closer situation should be interesting. In all honesty, I’d like to see someone the Mets control for more than 2013 get a shot at closing regularly to see what we’ve got. Edgin, Parnell, whoever. This is the kind of throw away year you use to see if Parnell actually has what it takes and can prove haters like myself wrong.

I think it will happen, but probably not until say mid-year. Give FFF a chance to do the job, while seeing if any of the LT possibilities look like they deserve the role (as the set up guy), or if someone in the minors is tearing things up.
FFF can also be a good trade chip. if he is having a solid year, given his cheap contract, some team could easily grab him to help shore up a pen.

actually, the OF can be looked at the same way, and a rason to not sign Bourn. Give the various options a shot, and a few of them (Cowpie and Dekker maybe) could actually have a future. so, lets see what they can do!
Now, if they had a shot at a difference maker that would be around for a while, absolutely get him. But IMO Bourn is not that guy.

1/31/2013-11:28am at 11:28 am (UTC -4)
I am fine with signing a decent guy for the pen even more than I am singing Bourn. I think with 7 names in the OF unless the guy is a RH impact OF (something we don’t even have in the system above A ball) then that would have been fine. Signing another speed based light hitting LH CF not as much. Same thing with the pen. If they wanted to go out and get a guy like Capps or Wilson I am fine with that as we don’t really have a guy ready to be the full-time closer.

Missing the point. They signed Marcum because they didn’t believe the had an in house candidate that was ready and wouldn’t hurt their production by forcing them into that role. In other words they did not believe Mejia was ready for that role.
The OF is different. It’s very possible that they believe that a combination of their 7 OF will produce as much as Scott Hairston.

This may be the most off base comment ever for you.The rotation along with the depth and quality of depth of the rotation FAR exceeds anything going on with the OF. Sandy has stated multiple times what they have in the OF is not the answer and has never backtracked from that statement. They do not feel that what they have in the OF between those 7 scrubs will amount to anything and they are choosing to not upgrade that area. As far as the rotation, maybe Mejia is not a solution but there is also Familia, Hefner and other scrubs that can fill the spot without spending a potential 8m on Marcum. If you want the kids to get their shot then Marcum goes against that. “The Plan” is all over the place. And don’t get me wrong I like the Marcum signing as long as he is healthy and they make a decision to extend them. If it’s for a year stop gap and then they let him go because he wants more money, then it’s a stupid signing that goes against everything else that they are doing.
Hazmet
1/31/2013-10:18pm at 10:18 pm (UTC -4)
For me the Marcum signing while nice was just done to take the pressure off of the drum beat calling for Wheeler to start the season with the big club and lets them delay starting the clock on him. On the other side of the second $4M if he’s successful then he’s the warm body to fill in for Santana’s spot if Johan stays healthy and they can flip him for some more prospects. The second $4M would be a bargain if as part of flipping Santana they get some team to eat cash too. If Marcum gets injured so be it for a worthwhile $4M investment.

Haz while I agree with most of what you said, and believe that signing MArcum was good to do, I don’t understand why what was done and absulutly nothing was done to upgrade the OF. If you just take it from a dollar perspective I firmly believe spending those dollars on the OF would have such a greater impact on the team then the rotation.
And for those who say I am wrong about not doing nothing in the OF, compiling 7 scrubs fighting over 4 spots is basically doing nothing. Doesn;t take much effort to find guys who are stuck in the minors for obvious reasons and say they they have a shot. You can probably get 20 more guys in about ten min….
Wait I have a friggen brilliant idea, remember what the Eagles did with public tryouts and it later became a Disney movie?!? CMON they could totally find a starting outfielder that way. THINK ABOUT IT.

I agree about the outfield being an area of greater need and impact. For the Marcum money (a guaranteed $4M), who could you have gotten? Hairston….who’s a platoon player. Someone else? Given that, Marcum makes sense to add though not at the position of primary need….and he also has some pretty strong upside,

Salty,
Who, other than Bourn, is worth that money now? There literally is Bourn and nothing else. Now, if that 4-8 million stops them from getting Bourn, I would be upset,
All in all, I still like the Marcum signing, and actually wish it was a 2 year deal. And I’d argue your point right along side of you if there was some Ross types and some Pagan types still on the market. I mean, nothing. Look at the remaining FA OF list from MLBTR.
Left fielders
Bobby Abreu (39)
Johnny Damon (39)
Scott Podsednik (37)
Center fielders
Michael Bourn (30) – declined qualifying offer
Scott Podsednik (37)
Grady Sizemore (30)
Right fielders
None
Now that, my friend, is UGLY. So here is to hoping the phones they are a ringin’ and Sandy is working something for the Hammer or CoCo Puffs or something, cause other than Bourn, there isn’t one FA that can help this OF at this point.

2/1/2013-9:53am at 9:53 am (UTC -4)
That’s my point too Gregg. For 8M total who are you going to get to slot into the OF that will actually make any difference at all and be a lock to be better than what we have? To me I would much rather spend 4-8M on Marcum than the same on a guy like Hairston.
I already said I wanted a RH RF that could hit in between Ike and Duda, who you going to get for that spot for that money other than a platoon player?
TRS86
2/1/2013-9:54am at 9:54 am (UTC -4)

At the beginning of the off-season, I would have argued for Ross or Ludwick to unseat Baxter/Hairston….but their price tags were at the high end, and it would have precluded any other move of significance (no plug for the Dickey vacancy that later emerged, no stockpiling of options for the bullpen). I understand the reservations about the pair of them….and that ship has sailed.
TX
2/1/2013-10:08am at 10:08 am (UTC -4)
I personally wouldn’t have minded to see them pick up Ludwick or Schierholtz or Ross, but all in all, there really was no guy that I thought the team could both afford and I was enamored with. I do wish they would have made a play for the Hammer or something like that. Just has the feeling like we have 2/3rds of a pretty good to ok team (INF – good, SP – very good, BP – better, but probably a coin flip, OF – Barren Wasteland of Frozen Tundra). That doesn’t usually equate to the playoffs, unfortunately.

That’s the problem right there. It’s not just about now it is about the trade deadline until now. If we sit and wait for guys we are enamored for then we will be waiting for a long time. There were plenty of un-sexy names out there that would be better than we have now.
