The Sunday Question

This team has a lot of question marks, especially with Spring Training being only two weeks away.  But hey, it’s the Mets right?  Why would this year be any different than any in the past?

Newsday reported that the Mets might be interested in Francisco Rodriquez as a possible closer this year.

Today’s question:  If the price was right, do you want K-Rod back and closing for the Mets?

I can’t see the price the Mets will offer being in the ballpark KRod is probably asking for.

  2. Stickguy

    not really.

  3. geiser

Francisco was better last year than K Rod.

  4. TX

    N to the O.

I want to see K-Rod closing for the Mets as much as I want to get punched in the face by a Communist. No thanks.

  6. Paul

    No.

KRod was awful as a setup man last year and has been in decline since before Omar signed him.

KRod punched his family in the “family” room at Citi.

Will, you and I will be in the 2013 Met bullpen before KRod will.

Besides, why should he be. He’s just plain awful. I would much rather re-sign Rauch who had a whip under 1.00 than Kraprod for ten bucks.

Yeah, after 2012, I agree 100%. KRod is done as done can be. And his being a scumbag person really does not help matters.

Great Super Bowl though, AND I had BALT for the third straight underdog week!

        YES!!!!

Wanny. We got our guy. Mets sign Lyons.

    1. Stickguy

cool. There is actually a real chance now that the pen could be perfectly fine, if not a strength, this year.

so lets see, Pen taken care of. Catcher. IF is ML quality. SP has a lot of upside.

If they just had a couple (hell, 1) OF to get excited about, it might be a real team after all!

And Bourn is still iffy to me. What I really want to see is a guy with a future, not a past. But right now, take anything!

I it’s a 4 year deal, 52-55 mil with an option year for the 5th (maybe a vesting option), its not a short term fix and you can juggle the corner OF spots for the year and other than retooling the BP, which is an every year thing anyway, that should be the only holes to fill.

        1. darknova306

That kind of contract for Bourn would be a disaster to me. No thanks.

          1. TX

If they can’t absorb that should it go south, then they are screwed and I’ll be routing for the Mariners and hoping they can seduce the Coyotes to come and play Hockey in Rain City.

          2. darknova306

Not my point, TX. I don’t think he’ll be worth that money past year two of a deal like that. Thus, to me it would be irresponsible to spend that money. Whether they can absorb the cost of him sucking or not is meaningless to me. I want to see them spend the money wisely, and I see a 4-5 year contract for Bourn to be ludicrous.

          3. TX

Agree to disagree, then. I think he fills multiple holes (leadoff bat, speed, stellar D in CF that should help make up for the lack of range in the corner spots) that he is a perfect for for this team. And at 13 mil per, I can see him not being worth it in the last year of his contract, but who is… But for the first 3, I can see that being worth it.

Drinking some Dales and some home brews for the game. What’s on your menu?

          4. darknova306

I’ve got some Flying Dog beers in the fridge. I don’t watch football, really, so it’ll just be a standard Sunday night for me.

I agree Dark, seems like the Bay move all over again.

          6. Stick

thanks Real. Sent a shiver down my spine saying that.

          7. TX

            You pansies…

    2. greggofboken

That’s a nice pickup. Ramirez, Rauch, Acosta, and likely Hefner all gone. Collective WAR – -1.5.

Replaced with Atchison, Lyons, Hawkins, and presumably Laffey: Collective WAR: 3.0.

      Good work!

      1. TX

I read this on AA (not the 7 step program) about the Mets 40 man rotation and who could get bumped. Looked like Havens has a good shot to get dropped. But with Lyons coming on, that puts the Mets right at 40.

      2. gategem

Greg, how consistent are relievers WAR values from year to year?

        1. greggofboken

Fair point. They fluctuate — as they did w/several of our pickups last year. Probably a better way to look at it is to average the last 3 years for each and see how that stacks up. Have to run….but that’s a worthwhile question.

        2. greggofboken

          3 year WAR averages:*

          * Hefner excepted, only one year of data

          OUT
          Rauch (.4)
          Ramirez (.5)
          Hefner (-.3)
          Acosta (-.1)
          Cumulative lost WAR .5 combined

          IN
          Atchison (.6)
          Lyon (.6)
          Hawkins (0)
          Laffey (.3)
          Cumulative gained WAR: 1.5 combined.

Not as dramatic as just looking at last year’s numbers….but still positive. I’m optimistic.

    3. srt

      Good call, Wanny.

Very nice. I’m actually getting a bit confident about our BP this year.

    4. TRS86

      Not official yet.

  9. Donar Kebab

If it’s a minor league deal, why not? Anything else, I’d pass.
