I actually disagree that somehow this OF is going to drag the team down from where it was last year. If anything, as much as people like to rag on it, Sandy DID improve it.
Bay and Torres got a boatload of ABs last year. Just not having them back, has to improve it! and Hairston still seems like a bit of a mirage to me, with the 20 HRS! but a lot of not too much behind it.

I’ll agree that this OF won’t necessarily drag the team down this year – well, anymore than the one we had last year. No one was more useless at the plate than Bay.
Duda needs to start showing the power and we’ll be needing at least one of the others to show that lightening in a bottle.
12mill is not too bad, but 4 years (or 5, depending on the option and if it vests) is much less enticing.
Someone over at AA posted that up through age 30, when he hit FA, Bourn has almost identical #s to Chone Figgens. Man, if the next 4 mirror him, Mets dodged a huge bullet!
Well the Mets were able to milk the Bourn illusion nearly all the way till Pitchers and Catchers report. Now they can try to turn the discussion to the loud sound of catcher’s mitts popping from Harvey, Wheeler and Syndegaard heat.
Man though, our OF just really suxs. Hello Cowgil in the Sand…
True, I just don’t think I can remember such a motley crew of candidates to fill all 3 positions in over 40 years watching this blue and orange passion play. That being said, for kicks I’ve now turned to looking at the possibility of having 3 homegrown OF making for every position except catcher being homegrown. Also just finished reading about them trying to convert Zach Lutz to an OF from articles a few days ago. Great more fodder.

Breaking News:
@BNightengale
Bourn will get $48 million over four years from #Indians with a fifth-year option that could turn deal into $60 million.

Oh boy….
I could see the Mets possibly going 4 years – or an option for a 4th year. But no way they were going 5 – or even an option for a 5th year.
This starting OF going into the season is gonna be…well…blah.

Tex and Knog must be in mourning now.

Bourn’s comps on Baseball Reference are Brett Butler and Dave Collins (solid) and right behind them — Roger Cedeno and Brian Hunter.
Two roads diverg’d in a wood.

saw this (from Sherman) : #Mets offer to Bourn was 4 yrs with no options at the same $48M range he got from #Indians
seems like the absolute max Sandy would have gone, though I was kind of surprised it was not 3.
so, looks like the relatively easy (just stay healthy) option year, + not having to wait out MLB decision, tipped the scales.

These are great. Just in time for pre season 2013.

FWIW, the Indians pick is protected.

Over at MLBTR, Rosenthal reports:
They will lose their competitive balance pick (approximately No. 71 overall) for signing Bourn.
A lot different than our first round, #11 pick.

It just feels like we’ve got an outfield filled with Ben Johnson’s. Maybe not that bad but man it seems close.

I don’t think the OF guys are close to that. No, not a bunch of Stantons, but not RJ journeymen either.
but, ST is starting, and soon we will all get to see what they bring to the table, and how the platoons work out.
Also, still a very real chance that they swing some kind of deal, either a trade or a SL waiver claim. Would not rule that out.
