Pedro Feliciano Has Rare Genetic Condition But Cleared To Resume Baseball Activities

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that it turns out Pedro Feliciano does not have a hole in his heart and has been cleared to resume Baseball activities but he was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition known as left ventricular noncompaction that will require him to wear a a heart monitor but should not impede his ability to pitch according to his agent Melvin Roman.

Feliciano who is ready to return to the team had this to say regarding his condition.

“I will attend to my ailment that was discovered during a routine checkup and not because of pain, but I can honestly say it will not keep me up at night. I will be on top of my condition, but it will not stop me from playing baseball.”

Roman released a statement where he says that if Feliciano’s condition was serious and experts had determined that he should not play baseball anymore that he is sure his client would not had returned to the mound.

    Good to hear that.

I can’t believe that will all the baseball physicals Pedro’s had over the years, they’re just picking this up. Maybe something changed enough as he got older for them to detect it.

That’s why it’s good to remember that doctors are ‘practicing’ medicine. Modern medicine has certainly advanced but it’s not infallible when it comes to diagnosis sometimes.

      it is good for him.

and plenty of people have “something” inside, that they never actually find out about because they don’t have the level of testing that a ball player gets.

Yes, a guy who has not pitched in three years with a heart issue—surely he will be a major factor in 2013.

Pedro, you were a fine Met if a dipsh*t one, and bless you and your family and have great health.

But let’s not delude ourselves here.

What is there to delude ourselves about? He’s a worn out and broken pitcher on a minor league contract. Health issues suck, especially heart related, so I wish him the best. Outside of that… meh. A likely non-factor in the 2013 bullpen is looking more and more like a non-factor.

they owed him the invite and checkup, after he got them Fulmer (who IMO is going to be a beast, and soon), while at the same time making Cashman look like an even bigger idiot.

      talk about a win-win!

but no, not likely he will do anything meaningful this year, but it was always fun to see him make Ryan Howard look foolish on one of those sweeping breaking balls.

The last two days I have had the pleasure of seeing both Darin Walter Gorski and Rafael Montero pitch. I didn’t pay much attention to their results as much as trying to determine their talent level from a small sample. Basically I came away thinking of the title of the old Peggy Lee song “Is That All There Is?” That’s not to say they can’t or won’t be successful nor that later in ST they won’t show better stuff.
