This Date In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The “Possible Slogans For 2013″ Edition 02-28-13

“AMAZIN”

“YA GOTTA BELIEVE !!!!!”

“The Magic Is Back !!!”

“Baseball Like It Ought To Be”

“Get Metsmerized !!”

These are some of the few memorable slogans from the past.  Some came from the sharp minds from top advertising agencies while others came from the minds of Mets managers as well as players that we thought were just – well… MAD.

But here were are coming into the 2013 without a memorable slogan. So I figured I would put on my thinking cap and see what would percolate from my Metscentric mind.

Here are some of my ideas – send all complaints to Rustyjr@realdirtymets.com

” It’s 1983 – But 30 years later !!!”

“Hopefully It Will Be More Like 1973 Than 1983!!!”

“Come For The Wright, Ike & Wheeler – Stay For The Cowgill !!!”

“Shop Smart – Shop S-Mart !!” (oops)

“Third Place Or Bust !!!”

And finally….

“At Least We Know We Are Better Than The Marlins !!!”

And as promised here is a link to last night’s blogger conference call with Sandy Alderson. Click here to view.

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:

Coach from the ’91 season, Tom Spencer is 62 (1951).

Starting pitcher from the ’06 season, Brian Bannister is 32 (1981).

Sadly on this date in 2009, one time Mets middle reliever, Tom Sturdivant passed away. Tom pitched one season for the Mets (1964) and appeared in 14 games.he finished the season with no record and an E.R.A of 5.97.

New York Mets purchased the contract of third baseman/outfielder/all around home run and strikeout threat, Dave Kingman from the San Francisco Giants on February 28, 1975. “Sky King” would spend two seasons with the Mets before being traded at what is now known as the “Midnight Massacre” in 1977.

He would return four seasons later when the New York Mets traded Steve Henderson to the Chicago Cubs for him on February 28, 1981.

The New York Mets signed free agent Pedro Feliciano on February 28, 2006. This was “Perpetual Pedro’s” second stint with the Mets. He is currently on his third go round with the team.

It’s a Mo Vaughn world – and we are just his side dish !!!

Geez, 38 years since we first got Kingman!

How about “Let’s hope we’re better than the Marlins!”

    1. metsilverman

A couple of the balls he hit in ’75 are just coming down now.

      1. Stick

        he did perfect the moonshot.

Kongs accomplishments occurred before there was widespread monster steroid use. Strawberry hit some incredible moon shots but the one that comes to mind is a ball hit by Mickey Mantle that was still ascending when it hit the façade over the 3rd deck in the old Yankee Stadium. If the roof wasn’t there that ball would have been identified as a small meteor in orbit.

I think we’ve done better in years they didn’t concentrate on some slogan going into the season.

Since I don’t think we’ll do much better than right around .500 this year – give or take a few games on either side of the win column….maybe ‘You Gotta Believe…In The Plan’ would be appropriate.

‘You Gotta Believe…In The Plan’–yes, your friends in The Core will be painting banners with this slogan for Banner Day at Citi!

      :-)

      1. Stickguy

        I guess I can’t use “It’s Omarlicious” again.

      2. Stickguy

and the Core is internet-based only. None of them are willing to come out of their Mom’s basement and spend money going to see a game. Better to wallow in their misery and self pity.

        I really hate self-imposed Martyrdom.

        1. kingman 26

Oh I am well aware of the nature of the Rotten Core…misery and self-hatred are the coins of their sad misanthropic realm of ridicule.

      3. srt

        hahahaha

  3. SaltyGary

“Come for the food and stay for the injuries”.

  4. Stickguy

“We’re coming back. You should too”

    “be patient. Please”

“Come see a game. The kids are fun, and we really need the money”

“The futures so bright, Fred has to wear shades”

  5. Stickguy

a little long (but there are 5 more verses!) but I ultimately vote for:

“You take the good, you take the bad,
you take them both and there you have
The Facts of Met fan Life, the Facts of Met fan Life.

    The 2013 New York Mets:

    We’ve deferred the payments.
    You defer the expectations.

      That’s Great!

    2. kingman 26

      That is outstanding!

      Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

        And so true.

Which trade do you think will come to define Sandy more? The Beltran trade or the Dickey trade?

    1. kingman 26

Excellent question and pretty impossible to answer now…while I will guess Beltran/Wheeler, let’s hope he is defined (positively!!) by BOTH trades.

      1. srt

Agree….Both would be the optimum result.

Right now from everything I’ve read, projections:

        – Wheeler – ace material
        - Shingaard – strong #2
        - Darno – Y. Molina type?

Given the fact that we only gave up Beltran for 2 months for an ‘ace type’ prospect….if Wheeler does pan out and stays healthy, that might be the topper.

Given up RA just hurt – even though the return was even better than expected and had to be done.

    2. greggofboken

I would think Dickey b/c of the context of the move. Beltran, it was all but certain, would be shopped and not retained by the Mets. Dickey’s status was much less certain, especially when coupled with the negotiations w/Wright. The question with Beltran was only whom he’d be traded for. Alderson had to make the decision to shop Dickey (or be willing to) in the first place — and marry that up w/his intentions for Wright — then the asking price.

Those decisions seem far less foregone conclusions. In that respect, I believe they’ll define him better (as do his actions re: Reyes).

      1. TX

I always put his actions with Reyes in the same boat as Beltran and all his good intentions of possibly moving Reyes got the boot when he went down with injury. To me, he gets a pass on that one, as we all knew he wasn’t re-signing with the Mets for ludacrisp money.

        1. Stick

you and me both, and I repeatedly said that to posters getting on Sandy for not trading Reyes for some motherload of top prospects.

Whether that was his plan all along (personally, I think he really did expect to resign him, but not for what the marlins offered!), reyes coming up lame just as the trade season was heating up slaughtered what you were getting back for him.

Hell, it was obvious to me, watching on a laptop, in late July that he was still hobbled, so you knew that no GM was going to risk a top prospect on a guy that looked like he was blowing his hammy every time he ran to 1B.

    3. Stick

      interesting question.

Beltran could be a steal if Wheeler “hits”, but that was a no-brainer move (trading Beltran), just good work/good fortune to get a good prospect. But really, it was a low impact move since it was just dumping a guy that was leaving anyway.

Dickey though, that was a huge move in terms of who they traded (a guy they could have had locked in for 3 more years) coming off a Cy Young. For that reason, I absolutely think the Dickey deal has to be his “signature” move, no matter how it works out.

Best deal? Remains to be seen, depending on how the players brought in work out. Could also end up being some other minor move (that may not have been made yet), even if it does not seem so at the time.

    4. srt

While I agree with you all that trading Beltran was a foregone conclusion and no brainer…..how many thought SA would be able to pry Wheeler away from the Giants for a 2 month rental of Carlos?

Both trade has their merits, that’s for sure. The Dickey one took some guts as well.

    5. darknova306

Entirely depends on how much upside is reached with each of the players involved. I’m going to guess the Dickey trade. That was magnificent. Talk about vaulting the minor league system up instantly and making the future a lot brighter, especially at a position (catcher) that’s been a black hole for years.

      1. TX

I lean that way myself. I’m curious to see how Shingaard progresses as well as that throw in they got. Supposedly some nice stuff there.

        1. Stick

Yeah, that Bulimia guy could be a real dark horse.
