The Sunday Question

First and foremost, let me apologize for last weeks Sunday Question debacle.  I really thought there was a question, somehow it was either deleted or erased.

Before today’s question I would like to make an observation.  There was a brawl last night during the WBC between Canada and Mexico.  Again, here, in my opinion, is a fight that never should’ve happened.  The WBC is an injury waiting to happen and even though David Wright hit a Grand Slam to gave USA a win last night, it could have easily been him in the middle of that brawl….risking getting hurt and possibly losing time for the upcoming season.

Today’s question was inspired by Mariano Rivera.  The Yankees are getting older and older by the minute and dropping like flies to injury.  By the way if you come over to my house, I will play the smallest violin for them today.  Let’s say, and yes I know this will never happen, that the Yankees want to get younger and they are looking at say Ike Davis and Travis d’ Arnaud as players they want.  Now I know they have no farm team to trade with so today’s question is.

How much are Ike Davis and d’Arnaud worth?  If a team could only trade with cash, how much is each player worth?

That brawl has me rethinking my Canada policy of wanting America to invade. I never knew they had it in them.

As for a dollar amount I don’t really know, it’s kind of a weird question. I imagine it has to be around what you are worth paying them to stay, right. IDK

Eh, what are you talking aboot you hoser? Haven’t you ever seen a hockey game?

Best nickname in all of sports belongs to Brad Marchand of the Bruins who is like a little ferret or wolverine .. Little Ball of Hate. Canadians maybe nothing more than Mexicans in overcoats but they are scrappy little buggers.

    2. gategem

The USA has already invaded Canada.

Yea but that doesn’t count, since it was technically the British we were going after. I doubt Canadian’s want to take responsibility for burning DC down in retaliation.

The brawl has me rethinking what kinda tool Oliver Perez is and if the Mets can trade for the Robinson kid.

    1. srt

I saw the game and the brawl.
Have to wonder just what Ollie’s problem was? Looked like the worst of it was over when he decided to take exception to someone….

While the potential to make “billions” (as per Dr. EVIL) with the Evil Empire (how fittimg) is greater, it seems that playing in Bron-x is losing its gilded luster, and rightfully so. Last year’s playoff games with the Tigers were a clear indication that their fair weather fanbase is growing tired and somewhat bored. With that comes less and less payroll available. Sure, you can pay for a big star but one or two people cannot carry a team. Jeter will retire soon, and I can’t blame him. Even as a Mets fan, I give he and Mo credit where it is definitely due. However, not being able to live up to their “legendary” status (some courtesey of PED’s) may hurt them more as other markets with less of a history invest and produce more and more championships to a new era of the game.

Oh man, I’m terrible at giving a monetary valuation for a player, and when you add in a player that’s never touched the major leagues it gets that much harder. I’ll say this, considering how many players the Mets seem to have that are glorified first basemen and how thin the catcher position is in MLB, I’d value d’oorknob higher than Ike.

  5. greggofboken

I have no sense of what d’Arnaud would be worth.

For Ike, Fangraphs, over the last three years, projects his value to be about $9M per year (I find their estimates on the high side). He is under control for 4 more years. His most recent salary was for just over $3M based on a Fangraph’s value of his production last year was $7M. I’m just guessing, but given that his arbitration salaries would be below market value for his actual services, what you’re selling is 4 years of his discount value. I’d say between $12-$15M.

    Wild guess, really.

hard to say. You mean what contract would they get, or how much would the Yankees have to pay the Mets for them?

Contract, well if Ike was a FA right now, he might get a 5/75 deal? is that a good number for you?

We at least know what D’oorknob is worth in players. 1 Dickey.

If they put him (TDA) up for auction (shades of Charlie O), maybe they get 25mill for him?

the brawl? Just saw a quick clip on the news but did not look closely. was it a typical MLB one, with a bunch of guys milling about, puffing up their chests, and making sure no punches were thrown?

but agreed, don’t really need my teams players going with that intensity and potential for non-playing injury during ST.

and Real, I think we all already knew how big a tool Ollie was!

    1. lgnym

It actually was pretty intense as brawls go. Some legit hitting and tackling going on instead of just standing around.

But I still don’t buy the WBC is a big injury danger angle. Yeah, I’d be pissed if a player on my team got hurt in a brawl in the WBC, but its not like that is something limited to the WBC. The classic Piazza/Mota thing happened in ST. Last year Prince Fielder was thrown at in ST so stuff happens there too

This is simply a bizarre question.

First off, the Mets would suffer a PR bashing of unprecedented magnitude if this idea was even considered.

Secondly, there are precedents dating back to the 1970s when the A’s tried to sell their stars showing that MLB would not allow this.

If this was allowed, the Yanks and Dodgers and others would have had a bidding was for Wil Myers. This would be horrific for baseball and will never, ever happen.

‘This would be horrific for baseball and will never, ever happen.’

      Thankfully, this ^^

“This is simply a bizarre question.”

      ditto

America’s true purpose is to buffer the Mexicans and the Canadians.

    1. gategem

Similar to New Jerseys purpose between New York and Pennsylvania.

  10. Hazmet

TDA less than a mil. He’s a milb catcher who hasn’t done anything yet.

Ike, with the short porch in Yankee Stadium, $18-20M. That’s based on: he hit 32 last year in cavernous CitiField with a crappy first half. He’d perpetually clear 40HR per year in that pinstripe bandbox. Based on that number of HR’s and a solid glove at first, that’s what guys like that would get paid jus on the power numbers alone.

    1. Stick

basically I think you are saying he would just take over the rest of Teixaras contract?

      1. TX

But actually might be worth it.

        1. Stick

we shall see in a few years if he produces and hits FA!

    2. gategem

The original Yankee Stadium was shorter to right field than the present one. The ball just seems to carry better in the new one. BTW the old Yankee Stadium was 467’ to left center. DiMaggio doesn’t get enough credit.

I find it interesting that people whine over the size of Yankee Stadium but not Fenway Park. Just remember the difference in Bay’s performance.

Watching that game and brawl yesterday, I’d have to say this was a little bit the fault of the Mexico’s manager. Wouldn’t it be his responsibility to make sure each and every player knew that run differential would come into play in event of a tie? It was quite apparent Mexico’s 3rd baseman told his pitcher to throw at him (as they showed it about a dozen times) and the pitcher promptly did just that.

Canada wasn’t trying to show them up in the 9th. They were just trying to score as many runs as they could.
    Dummies….

  12. srt

I wouldn’t even attempt to guess what these 2 players are worth. I know Fangraphs and a couple of other sites do the match on that so I’d have to defer to them.

Moot point as someone already pointed out b/c I don’t think you can trade these type of players for cash anymore.

I know you mentioned the Yankess so even if you could that would be the last team in the AL I’d want to be helping out. Add in the rest of the NL east with that.

    OT:

    Go USA!

I wasn’t much into the WBC last time they played but I’m really enjoying these games this time around.

  14. Stick

speaking of buying players, what ever happened to those Cuban dudes (the OF that I was all excited to go after, whose name now escapes me, and Diaz (?) the SS)?

they were supposed to do a tryout session months ago, but some technical paperwork glitch popped up, and I have heard nothing of them since.

    1. srt

Think his name is Alvarez? Alveraz?
And I have not idea…haven’t heard anything more since they said he would be auditioning for teams in mid January.

  15. Paul Festa

Great question. I’d have to get a lot in return for Ike (because it’s hard to replace 32 HRs), and I’d have to see how d’Arnaud plays in my organization before I could put a price tag on him.

  16. gategem

I haven’t watched the WBC but it sounds as if the fight was well worth watching and the highlight of the series. It would have made the fight more intriguing if some of the players on opposite sides belonged to the same major league team. Back when I pitched if I hit someone I would tell them to stop whining and rub some dirt on it. If they continued to complain I’d ask them if they wanted me to fetch their mommy to come and kiss it.

Will you do an excellent job week after week and if in a given week you can’t think of an interesting question just say so and declare it an open thread.

Nah, let’s debate Johan’s insouciant avarice and insolent apathy…
