Thanks for all the good comments on the post yesterday.  Today, lets narrow that list down to three topics.  The actual boundary lines for the topics will be discussed once the topic is chosen.

Hey I guess you liked my suggestions Chief!

    :-)

  2. TRS86

I am not sure why I found that pic so damn funny.

    1. TX

      Has to be the “beard”.

    2. darknova306

That picture made my day. Absolutely hilarious.

      1. TRS86

Glad I could help. Even though a picture like that could sway the vote.

        1. TRS86

Maybe later on we should play, Caption this with that pic? Just for old times sake.

  3. srt

    Dang, only three?

Not a lot of votes yet but something tells me 2 of my 3 choices won’t be that popular. No matter….all of these are interesting.

    1. Stick

that is the beauty of a democracy. Everyone gets a vote, and most of them are completely disregarded.

    2. Prismo

You’re the one who voted for “Best dimples of all-time,” aren’t you?

      1. TX

Underneath that Gortons Fisherman’s Beard Jose had rocking, he was flashing some dimples as well. Just sayin.

      2. srt

        Ha!……no.

  4. srt

OT, but I just laughed right out loud at this tweet:

DPLennon Reyes said he has “unbelievable memories” from Miami, but added, “I know I don’t want to play for the #Marlins no more.” #blameloria

I just keep wondering why Reyes is apparently the only one who didn’t see this coming. Hand writing was on the wall with all those heavily back loaded contracts. We knew he wasn’t finishing that contract there. Only thing I miscalculated on was just how quickly Loria would trade him.

    1. darknova306

He was blinded by piles of cash money.

    2. TRS86

Yup, either he was blindly ignorant or willfully ignorant but either way he’s rich and ignorant.

      1. gategem

In retrospect I’d rather be old, rich and ignorant than old, poor and smart which I am right now. Would I like to be young again? Hell No!!!!!! So Reyes will be fine.

    3. Prismo

Yeah, whatever. If he could go back in time and either take the $106MM Marlins deal (knowing he’d be traded ) or an $80MM deal the Mets might’ve offered….I’m 99% sure he still does the Marlins deal.

      1. TRS86

I honestly think the Mets deal was approaching 100 as well with options but hey Miami had a nighclub in CF.

    4. kingman 26

He received ONE offer for bigtime money.

      It was from the Marlins.

That is why he signed there and would do it 100 times out of 100.

  5. Boomer

A little off topic but I just wanted to point out that it is so cold in St. Pete that the Phillies ball girls (aka Hooters girls) are wearing sweaters.

    Damn you globull warming!!

    1. darknova306

      Sweaters?!? Blasphemy!

We’ve got more snow on the radar for the weekend and middle of next week here upstate. Me likey! :)

      1. Hazmet

I need to head upstate soon to get one of my upstate fixes in. People who only think of NY as down state don’t know what they’re missing. I need my ADK fix.

        1. darknova306

Don’t forget the Finger Lakes! We’ll provide for all your drinking needs :)

          1. Stick

and bugs too. don’t forget that.

          2. darknova306

West Nile Virus for the win!

          3. Hazmet

How could I may ancestors had a bakery in Geneva, NY in the 1850′s. ;)

And there’s the drinkin’ part too.

        2. gategem

I was offered a job by Northrop Grumman in Buffalo and I laughed for 5 minutes before hanging up on them. To travel that far from Long island and still be in New York State??? I shudder to think of it.

  6. greggofboken

DW is putting that USA WBC team on his back. Red hot stretch for him. Good omen!

    1. darknova306

He’s a traditionally very streaky player having a hot streak in a handful of games against pitchers that haven’t even finished Spring Training. I’d say it means just about as much as any other Spring Training results.

Not to try and burst a bubble or anything… :)

  7. srt

    Holy Captain America.
David Wright is just on fire in this WBC.

Oh, and screw John Smoltz and his snarky comment that Wright will be lucky to come up with the bases loaded once in 2 months with the Mets.

    1. darknova306

Smoltz has a point with the lineup that’ll be out there for the Mets…

      1. srt

Speaking of…..there might be something to that theory of Wright hitting much better when he’s not the only one in the line up trying to carry the team

        1. darknova306

He hit pretty poorly in the second half last year when Ike was carrying the offense. I think that theory is overblown.

          1. TRS86

Agreed Dark. I think we have seen that Wright puts a lot of pressure on himself and tinkers with things when he starts struggling which can lead to longer slumps. Normal for a guy playing in NY.

          2. srt

So just coincidence and/or a younger Wright when he put up more power numbers when Reyes/Delgado/Beltran was in the line up along with him?

            I’m honestly just asking here…..

          3. darknova306

First, he’s always been streaky, so looking at a handful of games right now to point out some larger narrative of his game is meaningless.

2005-2008 Wright had a different swing than 2009-2012 Wright. When he moved away from the level swing and started swinging for the fences in every at-bat he went from a ‘great but streaky player’ to a ‘wildly inconsistent and overrated player’. And that transition happened with Reyes and Beltran still in the lineup.

If he really does only hit like a great player if the lineup around him is stacked, then the “not a superstar” comment is 100% true.

  8. kingman 26

Were these even pro pitchers Captain Dimples is “on fire” against??

Who exactly is he getting these hits off of here?

    Rudy Stein and Amanda Whurlitzer?

Sorry, but the Wright fanboy behavior is really, REALLY silly.

    1. TRS86

Does it really matter if he hit them off of the Incredible Hulk and Thing? As Dark mentioned it’s just like ST but with more pressure. However, why rain on one of the few things we have to be positive about? Enjoy it even if it is meaningless to some, it isn’t meaningless to many.

      1. kingman 26

I did not say it was meaningless in the sense of people taking pride in the USA, but really, spring training hits might be more meaningful than hitting the pitchers he may be hitting off of in the WBC.

And please correct me if I am wrong, as I know little about who he has actually been getting the hits off of.

        1. SaltyGary

Hey did you get the boot from Metblog? Just saw someone had “Free Chest Rockwell” in the comment.

          1. kingman 26

            HAHAHA! Who and which post?

About a month ago I got so fed up with how terrible the site is, I made really over-the-top obnoxious comments in several posts while I was out of town, did not comment for days, and realized that I did not miss it AT ALL, so after my trip I never went back…he may have banned me, I really do not know…

Seriously, over the last month, whenever I read a post, it almost always is just idiocy. Utter idiocy with zero value. And while there were a few dozen great folks who comment there, I would find myself arguing with complete loser morons who would insist that Murphy is one of the game’s top 3-4 2B or that deferring money has nothing to do with current payrolls or something else equally idiotic.

And one day Baron evaluates a pitching performance of 1.2 IP with 4 H and 4 BB and 1 K as good as the guy was “throwing strikes.” Or Cerrone saying that Gee is easily forgettable and “that’s what I like about him.”

It really was two things–people would ask the critics “if the site is so bad, why keep coming back?” And they are right.

Secondly, it is an absolutely terrible site, run by utter loser clown mediocrities, and I refuse to continue giving them page clicks and support. Cerrone and Baron absolutely suck at what they do, and really, I have contempt for them. It is SO easy to post articles that are not filled with errors of every sort.

Some of you like to debate with idiots, I guess I do not. The comment section here is like an Ivy League school while at Metsblog it is like a normal public high school–lots of smart people but lots of loud, obnoxious idiots.

I am not going to go back and try to comment because I refuse to support them anymore and I do not want to get back in the habit. Really, since we all got the boot years ago, I only was at Metsblog for the last 8–9 months or so, at first since you guys hang at MMO which I never will do, and then to try to bring people here, which I did to a small degree.

I have retired from commenting anywhere but here, except for occasional comments at the Star Ledger Met and Net sites.

          2. SaltyGary

Look under my comment in this thread:

            http://metsblog.com/metsblog/bullpen-spots-will-likely-go-to-veterans-in-camp/#disqus_thread

My favorite idiot to bust on is that guy “Benny”. He wants Murphy to bat 8th because it is so important to CLEAR the pitcher in the batting order.

          3. kingman 26

            OMG CLASSIC!!

A whole bunch of people are talking about it in the David Wright thread.

            That is absolutely HILARIOUS!

That funny Mike Bee guy signing his posts “Metsblog shouldn’t censor free speech. Free Chest Rockwell.”

Oh man, that is flattering and funny as HELL.

            Maybe he DID ban me.

            HAHAHAHAHA!

          4. kingman 26

PS Gary–Thanks for bringing this true hilarity to my attention, and if you could, say hi to those folks discussing it in that thread and let them know they are welcome here and that the ONLY thing I miss about Metsblog is interacting with the few dozen great commenters who I do miss.

        2. TRS86

Like I said Kingman, it doesn’t matter if they are off of my high school team pitchers (who are actually decent but we can’t hit for crap) the point is that Wright is doing well and it’s something to be happy about. Just let Mets fans relax and be happy about something.

          1. kingman 26

            Fair enough.

We can cheer for Captain Dimples and boo for Captain One-Hitter, El Rey Del DL!

            :-)

        3. srt

Some of these pitchers might not be from MLB, but are highly rated in their own country. I’ve heard the booth talking about several during games I’ve watched.
Not for nothing but outside of Dickey, Gio and Kimbrel the USA pitchers aren’t exactly the cream of the crop.

I don’t understand the mindset of some (some = comments I’ve seen in general) on these are just exhibition games. I’ve watched about 3/4s of these games so far and the intensity and competition these games are being played with is more along the lines of a post season game, not exhibition games. These guys are in it to win it.

          1. kingman 26

OK SRT, I am going to watch the US–Dominican game tomorrow.

            I should check it out.

          2. Prismo

Totally agree 4D. These guys are competing their hearts out. If you’ve seen one of Larry Bowa’s reactions in the dugout you know how important these games are!

          3. srt

Hope you didn’t think my comment was directed at you, Kingman. I tried to make that clear.

Not reading it here but some comment made at other sites have fans calling this everything from ‘not real baseball’ to comparing it to a picnic softball game. I was just trying to make the point that anyone who has watched some of these, there’s no way you could come away with that thought process.

I’m really looking forward to that game tomorrow. Dickey is starting that game and he wasn’t very good at all in the first game. Hoping he’ll be the RA Dickey from last year we all knew and loved.

Oh…let me warn you…..Joe Torre as manager of this USA team? Blah…who the hell bunts in the first inning with 2 men on and no one out? With that stacked line-up? I felt like I was was Jerryball. :-)

          4. srt

            *was watching Jerryball.

          5. srt

Prismo – did you hear Bowa’s comment after that bases clearing double Wright hit:

He turns to Torre and he says: ‘That David Wright is a player, isn’t he?’ Torre looks down and shakes his head. Probably thinking something along the lines of ‘that’s how you do it, Arod’. LOL.

          6. kingman 26

SRT–Not sure I could ever be offended by anything you say!

I will watch the game tomorrow for sure, as I hear that Dominican team has a few good players…

          7. TRS86

Yeah, funny thing is the Wright detractors were saying that Joe shaking his head was him saying no. LOL.

          8. gategem

Watching grass grow is a much more rewarding spectator sport than watching these games. :-)

        4. TRS86

Which is actually one of the problems SRT. These guys want to win so badly that I can’t think they are too concerned with ramping it up too early.

          1. srt

Yeah, I saw that with the Cano and Nick Punto controversy the other day. Or that brawl….jeeze, can you imagine if one of those guys had to start the season on the DL b/c they got hurt in that brawl?

I think they competitiveness is kicking in which might make it a little dangerous with a potential injury. Since we’ve got only Wright to worry about this year, here’s hoping he’s got some sense not to risk an injury, if he can help it.

    2. Prismo

I just looked up party-pooper in the encyclopedia and there’s a picture of you!

      1. kingman 26

        That’s a misprint—I am under party-STARTER.

    3. greggofboken

I believe the slam was off Matt Torra, a first round pick of the D-backs, now trying to crack the Rays. Wright’s RBIs last night came off Andres Santiago, a 23 year old pitcher (AA) in the Dodgers system (2.77 ERA last year) and Xavier Cedeno, a 26-year old pitcher who’s been up and down with the Astros.

So, yes, they’re professional – probably around the level that you’d see in a spring training game….though as noted, they’re playing with more desire than you’re likely to see at 1:00 or so this afternooon.

I confess I wouldn’t be following this much, but a friend’s relative is pitching for PR (Randy Fontanez – a Mets prospect).

What does it mean? Maybe not much. But it shouldn’t be belittled. It’s a big deal to many who are playing.
