Moderate Intercostal Strain Shelves Wright For A Minimum Of 3 To 5 Days

By now most reading this probably already know (which begs the question why am I even posting this) that Mets 3B David Wright aka Captain America of the WBC was diagnosed by team doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York with a “moderate intercostal strain” and will rest for the next three to five days.

Mets GM Sandy Alderson refused to speculate about Wright’s availability for Opening Day saying, “Is it possible he’ll be out for a period of time? Sure. But what we know right now is he’s going to rest for three to five days and we’ll see what happens.”

Alderson, who was unaware that Wright had started experiencing discomfort for about a week, said Wright had hoped it would go away but it didn’t and Wright felt the responsibility to deal with it. So when the Mets were made aware they took what they felt was the right course of action which was to not allow Wright to play and to have him fly to New York for further exams.

Oh what the hell, I’ll beat the dead horse.

    Put a boot on it!

and if he misses any time to start the year, then yes, it is a huge black mark (Buds worst case scenario?) for the WBC, because no way in hell he would have tried to play through it for 10 days early in ST.

I still say this is taking a bit of a leap. I will be curious to hear what Wright will say when he faces the media but as with Santana I will give Wright the benefit of the doubt that he would do what he needed to be ready to start the season and if he played it was because it was a non issue.

People will over react to this cause it occurred during the WBC. Many figured this would be the case if an injury occurred so this is par for the course.

Murphy has a strain and Wright had one last year. These things simply happen.

You can’t put players on a shelf till the season starts. As long as their is a WBC players will play and all fans can do is hope they don’t get injured. The same we do when they play in a Spring Training game.

but, what is the key difference between Murphy and DW circa 2012, vs. DW 2013?

the first case, they had an early spring tweak, immediately got it looked at, and took some time to rest for the season.

this year, DW decided the WBC was more important, so he decided to try and gut through it, and seems to have aggravated it. Hard to say if it is now worse than before, but absolutely the rest period is starting about 10 days later!

This is again IF it is believed Wright tried to play through the discomfort because of the WBC. It remains to be seen if that was the case. I am sure these questions will be asked at some point in the near future to Wright but my point continues to be that the idea that Wright purposely risked further injury to play in the WBC is something that for now I will give him the benefit of the doubt was not the case.

Is it possible that it turns out he showed poor judgement in his decision in waiting to tell someone? Yes but right now I will lean to giving a Wright the benefit of the doubt.

Start the clock 16 days to see if Wright will be ready for start of season. If in 5 days their is anything less than drastic improvement on his part I would think it’s safe to say scratch him for the 1st week of the season.

      there goes the season…

Just two more weeks and hopefully we can start the annual, “who’ll come off the DL first” watch, followed by the “who’ll go on the DL first” watch and the obligatory “when the hell with Darno and Wheeler get here to part the water, burn the bush, afflict Philly with snakes and locust and get us to the playoffs” watch.

    1. Stick

the life of a Met fan!

and FYI, I think Philly already has the snake, locusts (they even have their own street!) and most likely pestilence.

      1. srt

        hahaha

I think the other NY team will lead the charge on the DL watch though.

How about the “who will be the first pitching prospect to have a career derailing injury” watch? :D

Use less Debbie Downer hops in your brews.

Debbie Downer? Was she not a character in an XXX rated motion picture?

          1. Stickguy

Yes. I quite enjoyed her time in Dallas.

USA blew that game especially in that 8th inning. Bases loaded and the best they can do is walk in a run? It’s like watching a Met game. LOL.

I guess without Wright, they’ve got nothing.

    1. srt

And Nelson Figueroa gets the W. Who would have thought?

While I’m bummed that Team USA lost, it was nice to see Rollins be the final out.

        1. kingman 26

          Hahaha! Yeah, that is cool.

        2. srt

          I’ll second that.

        Death by Figgy.

        What a way to go.

gotta say, seems like ST should have been over weeks ago. this is just dragging on and on. can’t we just pick a 25 man roster and start the season already?

and of the various story lines in ST, Tejada is just totally below the radar. I know you can’t put too much stock in ST #s, locked in starters are just getting ready, etc. But man, Ruben is having a terrible spring with the bat (I don’t see enough of actual games to have any clue how he looks in the field).

    1. darknova306

It’s still snowing around here, so it would feel weird to have the season start now.

Tejada, as with Harvey, is being vastly overshadowed by other story lines, so I hadn’t heard anything about him so far. Still hard to put too much stock in ST numbers, especially for a guy who is already guaranteed a starting spot.

      1. TX

Agreed. Though, I do hope that Cowgill’s number stick going into the season.

        1. Stick

I like him. really curious to see what he does this year.

        2. darknova306

Not much in his history to make me think he can put up a solid season as anything but a very part time player. He’s probably not gonna do much.
