Last Night on the Farm - 5/5/11
Finally, a full slate of games, but first just a couple tidbits: The Mets signed pitcher Brian Sweeney to a minor league deal. It’s doubtful that he’ll make an appearance with the Mets, but the Bisons need some rotation help with Boof Bonser and Jenrry Mejia done with TJ surgery. Also, current Bison Russ Adams retired from baseball after hitting just .180 on the season. Adams was drafted by J.P. Ricciardi’s Blue Jays one slot ahead of Scott Kazmir in 2002 and was once a top prospect. Now to the games:Buffalo 6, Louisville 5:D.J. Carrasco got the start, going 5 innings and giving up 3 runs on 7 hits, striking out 3. Dale Thayer gave up 2 runs in the top of the 9th to give the bats the lead, but Jesus Feliciano came to the rescue with a walk-off 2-run hit with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Ruben Tejada had 2 hits, including a double and 2 RBI’s. After a few days out of the lineup, Fernando Martinez returned, playing right field and getting 2 base hits.Binghamton 7, Erie 1Another spectacular outing for Brandon Moore, surrendering an unearned run on 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5 in 8.1 innings pitched. Moore is now 3-0 on the year and rocking a 2.76 ERA. From the leadoff spot Jordany Valdespin was 3-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Michael Fisher continues to be the team’s best hitter besides Josh Satin with 2 hits including a 3-run homerun. Satin added a double and an RBI himself. Eric Campbell was 1-3 with 2 RBI’s and Kai Gronauer was 1-3 with a double. Both Campbell and catching-prospect Gronauer are hitting .218 and are trying to improve upon a struggling start to the season.Bradenton 4, St. Lucie 2This is getting serious: the once dominant team in PSL has now lost 5 in a row and 7 of their last 9. Jeurys Familia was the tough-luck loser giving up 1 run in 6.2 innings with 6 strikeouts. John Church gave up 3 more runs, making a 2-run homer from Stefan Welch in the 9th inning meaningless. Cesar Puello was 2-3 with a walk, and Wilmer Flores and Jefry Marte each doubled, but the Mets did nothing else at the plate, with Angel Pagan and Matt Den Dekker both going 0-4.Rome 2, Savannah 4Greg Peavey looked good yet again, pitching 6 innings striking out 6, and giving up just 3 hits with no walks. Gabriel Zavala and Josh Edgin both gave up an unearned run, combining for 3 innings of relief. It’s amazing that Gnat pitchers only gave up 2 runs, considering the team committed 4 errors, 3 of them coming from Robbie Shields. At the plate, Savannah barely had more hits than errors with 5. Alonzo Harris had 2 from the 9-hole. Aderlin Rodriguez, Robbie Shields, and Sam Honeck each contributed a single, but that was it. One positive that came out of this game was the return of Darrell Ceciliani, who was back in the leadoff spot after going to the DL 5 games into the season with a hamstring injury. He was 0-3 with a walk.
