St. Lucie is on break, but Brooklyn starts their season with a win: Norfolk 9, Buffalo 0This was Mark Cohoon’s best start in AAA. It wasn’t great, but it was progress, and we expected him to take a few starts to make some adjustments. He went 5 plus innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 1. Brian Sweeney got pounded for 5 runs in .2 innings. No Fernando Martinez after he left the previous night with “knee soreness” in the same right knee he has arthritis. Apparently spectators noticed him limping even before the game. Anyway, without him the lineup was even more watered down and managed just 7 hits, 2 coming from Nick Evans, including a double; the rest were all singles. Binghamton 10, Trenton 4It was just the 2nd win of the year for Robert Carson, not that he didn’t earn it going 5 innings giving up 3 runs and striking out 7. Colin McHugh gave up just 1 run on a solo homer in a 4 inning save. Half of the B-Mets runs came off of homeruns by Jon Malo and Brahaim Maldonado. Jordanny Valdespin, Josh Satin, Jose Coronado, and Raul Reyes each had 2 hits. Miraculously, only 1 batter in the B-Mets lineup ended the game with an average below .200. Greenville 5, Savannah 0Yohan Almonte took the loss after 5 runs in 5 innings. Chase Huchingson followed him with 3 shutout innings, giving up just 1 hit and striking out 5. Wilfredo Tovar continued his tear with 2 more hits. Joe Bonfe had 3 hits, including a double, from the 9 spot. Cory Vaughn got a hit, but struck out twice as he continues to struggle. Brooklyn 5, Staten Island 3It was Mets over Yankees on opening day in the NY-Penn League! Eduardo Aldama was the opening day starter for the Cyclones and lasted 4 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits, striking out 3. Orlando Tovar got the win after giving up an unearned run in 1.2 innings. T.J. Chism, Hunter Carnevale, and Jeremy Gould combined for the final 3.1; Chism struck out 3. Daniel Muno and Travis Taijeron both had 2 hits in their professional debut. Of the 10 position players that played, 8 had at least 1 hit.
