Last Night on the Farm - 7/4/12
I would love to make the cliché “lots of fireworks on the farm last night” comment for the 4th of July, but outside of Brooklyn that just wasn’t true. There was a lot of losing and little scoring last night. Also of note, Chris Schwinden was designated for assignment by the Yankees yesterday, that’s the fourth time that’s happened to him this year. Now, onto the games: Syracuse 5, Buffalo 0 Matt Harvey pitched 6 innings and gave up 2 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. He took the loss after the Bisons failed to score. Jack Egbert gave up 3 more runs, as his ERA has risen to above 5. Adam Loewen was 2 for 3 in his return to the Bisons. Buffalo had 5 singles and that was the extent of their offense. Richmond 9, Binghamton 4 Greg Peavey took another loss, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits in 4.2 innings. Adrian Rosario continues to struggle in AA, giving up 2 runs in 1.1 innings. The B-Mets did manage some offense with 10 total hits. Juan Lagares was 3 for 5. Eric Campbell and Dustin Martin had 2 hits each; Campbell homered and drove in 3. Reese Havens and Jefry Marte both doubled. Wilmer Flores did not start, but pinch hit in the 9th and made an out. Jupiter 4, St. Lucie 3 Chase Huchingson had a solid outing, lasting 5 innings and giving up 3 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits. Jack Leathersich took the loss after giving up a run on 4 hits in 2.1 innings. Leathersich has struggled the last 3 times out, causing his ERA to skyrocket, but between Savannah and St. Lucie this year he has struck out 68 in 45 innings. T.J. Rivera was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Cory Vaughn was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. Zach Lutz played a few innings going 0 for 1 with 2 walks, as he makes a rehab appearance for St. Lucie as he comes off the DL. Charleston 3, Savannah 2 Jacob DeGrom was good again but suffered a tough luck loss, going 5.2 innings and giving up 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits with 6 strikeouts and no walks. Randy Fontanez, who has been pretty solid out of the Gnats bullpen this year, threw 3.1 scoreless innings. Cam Maron and Aderlin Rodriguez both had 2 hits and both homered. Brian Harrison and Matt Reynolds both doubled, but that was it for the Gnats offense. Brooklyn 9, Williamsport 5 Julian Hilario struggled through 4.2 innings, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits while striking out 5. Matt Koch let up just 1 hit in 2 innings of work while striking out 4. Ernesto Yanez threw 2 hitless innings. Brandon Nimmo hit a 3-run homer. Cole Frenzel was 2 for 5 with a triple and 2 RBI’s. Stefan Sabol was 2 for 4 with a double and homerun. Jayce Boyd was 2 for 4 with a double. Eight of the nine Cyclones had at least 1 hit. Elizabethton 8, Kingsport 1 Persio Reyes let up 6 runs (4 earned) in 3 innings of work, getting his 3rd loss of the season. Matthew Budgell struck out 3 and gave up an unearned run in 3 innings of work, one of the few bright spots for the K-Mets. Gavin Cecchini was 2 for 4, but committed his 4th error of the season.
