Buffalo and Binghamton continue to play out the season, which concludes today. Savannah doesn’t even come close to playing, and we do a little playoff preview St. Lucie and Brooklyn. Let’s get to it:Buffalo 5, Scranton Wilkes Barre 1 game 1 (7 innings)Brian Sweeney will end the season with a 5-5 record after a solid 5 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits. Dale Thayer pitched 2 shutout innings, and may be headed for the big leagues in a couple days. Mike Baxter singled and drove home 2 runs. Jordany Valdespin was 0-3 with 2 strikeouts. Zack Lutz is back on the DL with concussion related symptoms, which means he will not be getting called up for September. He has also pulled out of winter ball in Venezuela.Scranton Wilkes Barre 2, Buffalo 0 game 2 (6 innings)Jose De La Torre pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Jack Egbert who gave up both runs. De La Torre has a 0.89 ERA in 14 appearances for the Bisons this year. Buffalo had just 3 hits, all singles, 2 by Val Pascucci.Reading 5, Binghamton 4Matt Harvey ended his season by giving up 4 runs on 3 hits in 3 innings, walking 4 and striking out 2. The B-Mets bats got him off the hook, but Ricky Brooks gave up a run in the 9th to pick up his 8th loss of the year. Dusty Ryan had 3 hits, including 2 doubles. Juan Lagares and Allan Dykstra both had 2 hits. Reese Havens singled. The B-Mets play their final game this afternoon.Palm Beach 4, St. Lucie 1Eric Beaulac got the start, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits in 3 innings, striking out 3, but taking the loss. Adrian Rosario, acquired from the Brewers in the K-Rod trade, made his Mets debut, giving up 1 run on 5 hits in 2 innings. Pedro Zapata and Cesar Puello had 2 hits each. Jefry Marte doubled and drove in the only run of the game. That concludes the Lucies regular season, as they lost 5 of their last 6. They have today off, and play a best 2 out of 3 series with Bradenton Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. St. Lucie has been pretty mediocre in the 2nd half after winning the first half championship, but with Darrin Gorski, Zach Wheeler, and most likely Armando Rodriguez in a game 3 scenario, they are going to have a chance to win the series, but they’re going to need to hit. These 2 teams recently played 5 straight against each other, with Bradenton winning 3 of 5. Over the first 3 games, the Lucies managed just 2 runs, before exploding for 14 runs in the final 2 games. My guess is we’ll see 3 low-scoring well-pitched games, and the Mets have to hope someone can come through with a clutch hit when they need it.Savannah at Lexington PPDThis one never had a chance to get started. The two teams will play a double header today; Savannah must win at least on of the games to win the second half title. Their first playoff game will be Wednesday.Brooklyn 7, Staten Island 4Carlos Vazquez gets pulled after giving up 3 runs on 6 hits in 2 innings, but the bullpen picked him up. Rafael Montero pitched 4 strong innings, giving up 1 hit, which was a solo homer, and striking out 4. Jeremy Gould and T.J. Chism combined for the final 3 innings, striking out 5. Richard Lucas was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Travis Taijeron hit his 9th homerun of the short season. That concludes the Cyclones regular season after winning 9 of their final 10 games. The one loss was the second half of a double header. In the playoffs they will meet this same Staten Island Yankees team in a 3 game series, right after sweeping 3 from them to close the season, outscoring them 22-8 in those 3 games. Game 1 is Tuesday at MCU Park in Brooklyn, while games 2 and 3 will be at Staten Island on Wednesday and Thursday. Obviously the Cyclones have a ton of momentum heading into the playoffs, which can be a very important factor. An even bigger factor could be a real good lineup that Brooklyn has. The Cyclones don’t really have the pitching the can dominate throughout even a short series and pitch a lot of shutouts, but they have enough to get it done with an average offensive output.
