If I told you in April that at this point in the season the Mets would be 41-39 you probably wouldn't have been that surprised. However the story here is how they've gotten to that point. After a 5-13 start, being over .500 at midseason seemed like a pipe dream. Especially when you consider the club lost two of their best players, David Wright and Ike Davis for large chunks of the first half. Yet suddenly, the Amazin's are in contention (somewhat) and have the city buzzing. When looking over the statistics it's easy to see that the offense has been the reason for recent team success. While the pitching has been solid, they rank near the middle of the NL in most important statistics. The offensive numbers, however, are very promising. Here's how they measure up:•5th in NL in runs (367). This comes as a surprise because at times the Mets offense has looked inept. These numbers are slightly inflated by a recent hot streak offensively, but maybe that offsets some of the previous struggles.• 1st in NL in BB% (9.3%) and 2nd in OBP (.336). The Mets are much more patient then in years past and this can possibly be attributed to Sandy Alderson's philsophy being put in place by the managers and coaches he's brought in throughout the organization.6th in NL in O-Swing% (28.4%). This also feeds into their BB% and OBP success. The Mets are simply not swinging at pitches outside the zone.2nd in NL in BABIP (.310). While this is a good thing, it's somewhat troublesome. Considering the Mets lack of power, thus adding to their total of balls in play, this is a statistic I could see regressing.5th in NL in wOBA (.323). Best stat for measuring offense. Great sign especially when you consider they've been missing two guys who could lead the team in wOBA when healthy. In all, the Mets have had a fine first half at the dish. The players are clearly buying into the philosophy of working counts and getting on base. When coupled with the fact that the Mets have done all this without Wright and Davis, you can see why Mets fans are so excited about this team.
