Ace Johan Santana showed up for work today, and with the exception of the 4th inning when the Rockies loaded the bases against him, he didn't allow them any thought of winning. He wound up throwing 104 pitches over 7 scoreless innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk as the New York Mets scaled the Colorado Rockies 7-0 in the 1st game of a doubleheader. The Mets put up a 5-spot in the bottom of the 2nd inning, facilitated by 5 consecutive base hits. Clean up hitter extraordinaire Daniel Murphy led off the inning with a double. Jeff Francoeur singled him to third. Cory Sullivan singled to drive in Murphy. Omir Santos singled to drive in Francoeur. Perhaps most surprising, Angel Berroa then doubled to score Sullivan and Santos and give the Mets a 4-0 lead. After Santana struck out, Angel Pagan drove in his fellow Angel and the Mets had their 5-spot. With vintage Santana on the mound, this was check and mate. The Mets had a total of 5 extra base hits for the game. In addition to Murphy and Berroa's doubles, David Wright doubled and Pagan and Sullivan added triples. For Pagan, it was his 5th triple in 109 at bats this season. The Mets got their final 2 runs in the 5th and 7th innings. In the 5th, Wright hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Pagan who had tripled. In the 7th, Wright's double brought in Alex Cora who had singled.Bobby Parnell and Tim Redding each threw a scoreless inning to finish the game. Please visit yahoo.com for the box score.
