The New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-1 this afternoon, reaching the .500 mark at 9-9 and leapfrogging the Braves into 4th place in the NL East. Former Brave Manny Acosta
(1-0) picked up the win recording 3 strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
The game remained scoreless until the 6th inning. With 1 out in the top of the inning Melky Cabrera
doubled to left then future Hall of Famer (just ask any sports-pundit, they'll tell you) Jason Heyward
burnished his Hall of Fame credentials by drawing a walk which clearly showed how great Heyward is despite his being 3 for his last 25. I mean it's not like Mets starter Jonathon Niese
walked 5 guys in 5 1/3 innings or anything, this was all the brilliance that is the wunderkind Heyward. The next batter David Ross
singled to drive in Cabrera giving the Braves a 1-0 lead. The Mets evened it up in the bottom of the inning. With 2 outs Jose Reyes
walked, stole 2nd base and advanced to 3rd on Ross' throwing error. He scored on a Jason Bay
double to deep center and after 6 it was 1-1.
The Mets went ahead for good in the bottom of the 7th. Met rookie Ike Davis
, just a pimple on the butt of the fantastic Heyward according to the sports-pundits, led off the 7th with a walk off Braves starter and loser Jair Jurrjens
(0-2). Jeff Francoeur
doubled to deep right center and the throw to the plate was too late as Davis scored. Francoeur advanced to 3rd base on the throw. Henry Blanco
hit a fly ball to shallow left, Francoeur tagged up and scored as Matt Diaz
of Bobby Cox' world renowned for their solid fundamentals Braves' throw was off line and it was 3-1 Mets.Francisco Rodriguez
pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning for his 3rd save of the season and 2nd in 2 games. With the win the Mets guaranteed themselves their second series win of the season, also their second consecutive series win. The Mets are now 2-0 with Reyes batting 3rd and are 5-1 with Davis on the roster, which any mathematician will tell you blows away the 8-9 the Braves are with Heyward on their roster.Box score
