Today's rubber games featured Dillon Gee for the Mets and Mike Minor for the Braves.Dillon Gee blinked first in the second inning when he gave up a solo home run to Jason Heyward. The Mets answered back in the the bottom of the frame when Jason Bay singled and Nick Evans hit a ground ball with eyes though the right side of the infield. With runners on first and second, Dillon Gee hit a single over the third baseman's glove. It was at this point when Reyes was supposed to be up but was pulled out of the game due to a stiff left hamstring. Willie Harris took his place and hit a bloop single which seemed to be lost in the sun and the Mets would score again. The Braves had the bases loaded via two hit batters and an error in the top of the third, but Gee buckled down and got out of the inning. Gee lived on edge for the fourth as well, but this time it cost him. Again, with a man on third, Gee walked the pitcher and the Braves scored on a failed double play attempt by the Mets. When the inning was over, the Braves had tied the game.It looked like Gee would get out of the fifth inning when, with two outs, he walked Jason Heyward and served up a ball that Alex Gonzalez hit into the left field seats. If that wasn't enough, Gee would give up another home run to Constanza. All in all, the Braves took a 5-2 lead but again, the Mets fought back.It would be Jason Bay who would start things off in the top of the sixth when he drew a walk, Nick Evans would hit a shot to left field that was misplayed by Constanza and with runners on second and third and two outs, the Butcher(Murphy) would come to the plate and hit a cue shot up the third base line thus scoring Bay. Willie Harris would score Evans with a base hit through the hole on the right side of the field and make the score 5-4.Manny Acosta came in for the seventh inning but the fireworks wouldn't be at the plate. Constanza stole second base and took a terrible slide hitting Murphy in the knee. Murphy left the game and the infield consisted of Evans at first, Turner at short, Wright at third and Hairston at second. Acosta got out of the inning without giving up a run.The Mets would tie the game in the seventh with Bay drew a walk, stole a base and scored when Angel Pagan hit a sinking liner that skipped away from Jose Constanza. The top of the eighth saw a whole infield, Duda at first, Turner at second, Wright at shortstop and Evans at third. The Braves threatened to score but failed.Bobby Parnell came in for a batter in the eighth but stayed in for the ninth and got in trouble. He gave up a bloop hit and walked a batter and gave up the go-ahead run to Larry Jones. The Mets made some noise in the ninth when Bay got another base hit but he was doubled off. The Braves won the rubber game 6-5.The Mets are, again, a game below .500 Side Notes: Gee pitched 5 innings, gave up 5 hits, 5 runs, and hit two batters. The Mets committed 3 errors in the game. Watching these two teams showed me this weekend just how far the Mets got to go before they could compete. How bad is the Reyes "injury", we're all going to have to sit and wait, but one things for sure, his free agent value is going to take a hit. Dan Murphy got hurt as well trying to make a play at second base. Dan Uggla extended his hitting steak to 28 games.
