The Florida Marlins
took a 6 run lead when they scored 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning off of Met starter Tim Redding
to blow the game open and never looked back as they coasted to a 7-3 victory. Jeremy Hermida
drove in all 3 of the 5th inning runs with a home run off of the Pepsi Porch.
The Mets did pose a slight threat with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, but Leo Nunez
came on to strike out Met rookie Fernando Martinez
to end the game with runners on 2nd & 3rd.The Mets
played their full cast of Scrubs
today and after the Marlins scored 2 runs in the 1st inning, many in the crowd of 40,727 began to line up at the Shake Shack
knowing they needed something good to remember about their trip to Citi Field.
Odd numbered innings were not good to Redding. He gave up 2 runs each in the 1st and 3rd innings, and surrendered 3 more in the 5th without recording an out before being replaced by Sean Green.
Green, Ken Takahashi
and Brian Stokes
pitched scoreless relief the rest of the way but by then the game had been decided.
In addition to the fine work of the bullpen, the other bright spot of the day for the Mets was the first Major League hit for Fernando Martinez, a 3rd inning single. Martinez later doubled in a run but finished his 2-5 day by striking out on a checked swing to end the ballgame. The other Fernando, Fernando Tatis,
drove in the first Met run with a 2 out single in the 1st inning. It was Tatis' first hit with 2 outs and runners in scoring position in 16 tries this season. Also, Brian Schneider
returned from the disabled list to single and walk in 4 plate appearances.
The checked swing call to end the game was debatable, but apparently umpire and Met nemesis Angel Hernandez
wanted plenty of time for dinner before tonight's NBA playoff
basketball game.Box score courtesy yahoo.com
