The New York Mets got a 2-out solo home run from catcher Rod Barajas
(7) to break a 4-4 tie in the top of the 9th inning, then closer Francisco Rodriguez
a/k/a KRod threw a 1-2-3 9th inning to record his 4th save as the Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 to even the 3-game series at 1 game apiece. Barajas leads the Mets with 7 home runs.
The Mets got on the board with alacrity in the 1st inning. Angel Pagan
greeted Reds starter Bronson Arroyo
by bunting for a base hit. He bunted the ball so hard it fell beyond the second baseman Brandon Phillips
in shallow right field for a lead off single. On a hit-and-run play Luis Castillo
singled through the hole between first and second moving Pagan to third base. Jose Reyes
hit an RBI single to center driving in Pagan to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. The Reds got the run right back in the bottom of the 1st when Phillips homered off the left field foul pole to tie the game at 1.
The Reds took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd on an error. Jay Bruce
led off and drew a walk off Mets starter John Maine
. Two outs later Ryan Hanigan
singled to right field and Bruce attempted to advance to third base drawing a throw from Mets right fielder Jeff Francoeur
. The throw bounced away from Mets third baseman David Wright
and Maine didn't back the play up well allowing it to roll into the dugout for an error so Bruce scored giving the Reds a 2-1 lead.
The Mets got even in the 4th when with 1 out Wright launched a shot 455 feet into the 2nd deck of Great American Ballpark for his 6th home run of the season tying the game at 2. In the 6th the Mets took the lead. Castillo walked and Reyes doubled. Then Jason Bay
hit a sacrifice fly to center driving in Castillo. Wright flied out to deep center which allowed Reyes to move up to third base, then after an Ike Davis
walk Francoeur singled off the glove of third baseman Scott Rolen
to score Reyes. Maine left for a pinch-hitter in the top of the 7th leading 4-2.
But Nightly Nieve gave it back. Fernando Nieve
took over in the 8th for Jenrry Mejia
who threw a scoreless 7th. Nieve got the first 2 batters he faced out then surrendered back-to-back solo home runs to Joey Votto
and Rolen, tying the game at 4, costing Maine a win, and setting the stage for Barajas.Box score
