With the New York Mets in 4th place, 10 games out in the NL East, they entered Atlanta for the 1st game of a 4 game series with the 1st place Atlanta Braves.  To keep their slim hopes alive the Mets needed a sweep.  They got 2 runners on base with 1 out in the top of the 1st inning and were poised to make a statement.  Then David Wright struck out swinging, Ike Davis struck out looking and the Mets left 2 runners on base.  The Braves quickly scored 2 runs off of Mets 5th starter Pat Misch in the bottom of the 1st.  Then with what may well have been their last gasp the Mets tied the game in the top of the 2nd.  Replacement reserve-to-the-reserve shortstop Luis Hernandez drove in ex-Brave Jeff Francoeur with a single, then Josh Thole scored on an Angel Pagan ground out.  But Luis Castillo grounded out to end the inning leaving Hernandez on base with the game tied at 2 runs apiece. When highly touted rookie Jason Heyward hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd that sound you heard was the last breath of the Mets 2010 season.  It was 5-2 Braves.  The Mets scored 1 more run the rest of the game on a 6th inning RBI triple by Thole, and left 12 runners on base for the whole game.  Meanwhile the Braves were scoring 4 more runs, 3 off of ex-Brave Manny Acosta in the 6th and the last 1 on a mammoth solo home run by Brian McCann off of erstwhile pitcher Oliver Perez who was pitching for the 1st time in 25 games despite being a healthy active member of the roster that whole time.  Final score Atlanta 9, New York 3.box score
