Like so many pitchers before him, Jon Niese was given the opportunity to get the Mets back to .500, Tommy Hanson would try to stop him and keep his Braves in front of the Wild Card Race. The book on Tommy Hanson is to get to him early, and the Mets did just that. Justine Turner got the Mets on the board with an opposite field home run (3) in the bottom of the first and after a The Butcher got a base hit, David Wright would drive a ball to the wall for a double and put the Mets up by two.The Mets had a chance to add on to their lead in the bottom of the second when they had men on second and third with no outs, but Hanson would work his way out of the inning and it would be the Mets undoing. Niese got himself in trouble in the top of the third when after a run scored, the Braves loaded the bases and Larry Jones hit a fielders choice that tied the game. The flood gates opened and the by the time the inning was over, the Braves had a 5-2 lead-but the Mets fought back.Angel Pagan worked out a walk in the bottom of the third and Jason Bay, who has been hitting the ball lately, hit a bomb to left field that brought the Mets to within one. Niese worked his way around a one out triple in the top of the fourth which was good because Josh Thole would tie the game with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth. The inning would continue when Reyes drew a walk and then put on a speed show when he stole second and third-but he would walk home when Justine Turner hit his second home run of the night putting the Mets in the lead and knocking out Tommy Hanson.Niese had to work around two runners in scoring position again in the top of the 5th but again, he escaped unscathed. Niese was done after 87 pitches and five innings and would get the win.Pedro Beato came into the seventh inning and just like that, the Braves were threatening with men on cornners and no outs. Beato was able to get out of the inning with the Braves only scoring one run. The Mets would tack on a three spot in the seventh and put the game out of reach for the Braves. Bobby Parnell came in the 8th and touched 101 on the radar gun.The Mets added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth when Scott Proctor came in for the Braves and got touched for a run. Wright drew a walk and advanced to third on a Pagan single (he went 3-3) and then scored on a Bay RBI single. Josh Thole came to the plate needing a triple for the cycle but failed.Manny Acosta came in to close the game out, after he gave up a bomb shot to Dan Uggla, he got his three outs and ended the game. The Mets are now .500Side Notes: The Butcher made another error at first base. David Wright made an bad call when he picked up a slow roller hit by Dan Uggla that turned out to be a base hit thus continuing Uggla's hitting streak to 27 games. Thole gunned down Bourne in the top of the fourth. Lucas Duda had a bad night in right field, one ball when in his glove and bounced out for a triple and he misplayed another ball that was hit toward center field. The Mets stole four bases tonight, two for Reyes and two for Pagan.
