Mike Pelfrey took the mound tonight to try to  even up the Subway Series and he had his  work cut out  for him  for the  opposing   pitcher was  5 game winner Phil Hughes.   Both pitchers had trouble in the first inning.   Pelfrey gave  up a  walk to Teixeira and gave up a base hit to A-Rod but managed to get out of it with a Cano pop up.   Hughes, however, would  get tagged for a  couple of runs and it would begin with  a double  from Jason Bay. Hughes   would then walk Ike  Davis and David  Wright  would single up the middle and score Bay.   Angel Pagan would single too  and score Davis and the inning would end with Wright  getting tagged out going to third. Both  pitchers seem to settle in as they both  threw a scoreless Second inning.    The top of the third saw a great leaping catch    by Ike Davis to snag a base hit away from  Derek Jeter.   Hughes  was cruising through the  third and had two outs  until Bay  singled and Davis drew a walk, Wright would again single up the middle and score Bay from second.   Angel Pagan would fly out.   Pelfrey would give up only a single in the top of the fourth and Hughes would match him with a zero in the bottom of the frame.  A little action in the fifth when Randy  Winn led off with a single and was sacrificed over by Hughes, but  Derek Jeter would ground out and  Bret Gardner would strike out to end the threat.   The Mets also  threatened in the bottom of the fifth after Reyes would pop up for the third time, however, Castillo would draw a walk and Bay would single again to push  Castillo over to third.  But  both Davis and Wright  would strike out on fast balls to end the inning.Mike Pelfrey got in trouble in the sixth when, after striking out  Teixeira and   A-Rod, gave  up a  hit to Cano and a double to   Swisher.  A single  from Cervelli would score the first run  for the Yankees.     Pelfrey was done for the night- His line:  6 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 5 strike outs....WOWThe Mets would get that run back when Pagan would lead off the bottom of the sixth with a double  when Randy  Winn botched a fly ball in the corner of Right Field.   Rod Barajas would hit a ground ball to first that would move Pagan over to third   base.   Frenchy would strike out and Alex Cora, who  was hitting for Pelfrey, would hit a base hit and score Pagan.   The Yankees would go to their bull pen with Chan Ho Park who gave up a hit to Jose Reyes.   Castillo would end the threat with a ground ball to Teixeira.Jenrry Mejia  would come in the top of the 7th and give up a lead off hit to Russo and a walk to Jeter but  Bret Gardner would ground out and Teixeira would come to bat with runners on second and third and strike out.   Jenrry Mejia was throwing 97 mph fastballs at A-Rod to get him to ground out to David Wright.   Chan Ho Park would come out for the bottom of the seventh and immediately give up an infield hit to  Jason Bay, who would steal second later in the inning for his 6th stolen base of the season.  After an Ike Davis pop up, Wright would fly out and Angel Pagan, would stay hot,  would single him in to increase the Met lead  to   5-1.  Feliciano would  not retire a  batter  and load the bases to boot in the bottom of the 8th.   Manuel would give him the hook for  Nieve who would strike out Juan Miranda but walk    Kevin Russo thus cutting the Met lead to 3.   Nieve would get the hook too  for  K-Rod for a 5 out save.   Jeter would hit into a fielders choice, scoring a run and Bret Gardner would ground out to Wright.  The real test for K-Rod would be in the top of the ninth when he would have to face Teixeira, A-Rod and  Cano.   K-Rod would strike out Teixeira,   give up a base hit to A-Rod, get Cano ground out and give up a hit to Nick Swisher.   Cervelli would end the game by  striking  out. The Mets will try a take the rubber game tomorrow with Johan Santana on the hill.
